In Canada, a "temporary" Goods & Services Tax was introduced in 1991 at 5%. They changed the name, joined it together with yet another tax and we now pay in Ontario, 13% even on our commission cheques because we provide a "service"!!!

Yes. In both NY and CT where I work, you need to pay sales tax on maintenance/repair items. (e.g. paint, carpet, sanding, vinyl, handyman work, etc.). but, for capital improvment projects (e.g hardwood flooring, kitchen renovation, tile floor, addition, bathroom remodel, etc.), you just pay sales tax on material and none for the labor.

Wow Susan Emo I'm shocked at what you have to pay on your commission..what a commission grab! We have fought that for years and still do not pay on tax on our commission..thank you Texas Real Estate Commission!! We do pay sales tax on parts and repair service.

I'm not aware of paying taxes on services, just goods. Like Kenneth J. Jones our sales tax can vary widely from one city to another. People used to drive out here for our 2% less sales tax to buy a car (we have a large dealership with almost every make including Lamborghini, Ferrari and Rolls/Bently just over the county line) because of this. Rumor is the state got wise to this and now bases a car's sales tax on the county where you live instead of where you bought it.

Good old government. Were it not for the Taxing and Spending Powers, government would have little power at all and the taxpayers keep allowing their governments the powers to tax more and find new taxes. Had enough yet?

In Florida Services that requires parts are taxed. If no parts are required, the service most likely is exempt. Example locksmith picks door lock is exempt since no parts are used. If he replaces the door knob then the door knob and the service to install the knob are both taxed. Hope that helps.

The laws vary from province to province, from territory to territory, from state to state, from municipality to municipality, from county to county, from independent school district to independent school district.
It depends on where the property is located, whether the property is real property, tangible personal property, its usage, whether there are exemptions available for certain types of customers or certain types of usage and so much more.
In other words, it depends.

Not here in NH. We do not have a sales tax. There is 9% tax on restaurants and hotels. But not on anything else like services, food, clothes, cars etc
