Arizona Falls dating back to the 1800s is a joy to visit in the Arizona Desert City of Phoenix and now generates power as part of a free public park refreshing for visitors with multiple waterfalls. (Photo: SRP website)Jeff Masich says hello at Arizona Falls in Phoenix ArizonaMany people do not know about Arizona Falls at the GR Herberger Park is the only waterfall in Phoenix caused by a natural 20 foot drop in the Arizona Canal. Locals have been coming here since the 1800s often on horseback for swimming and picnics. Here is an old picture of Arizona Falls in the time before electricity. Yet, surprising that many current day locals do not even know it exits! This city park maintained by SRP was the first hydro power plant in Phoenix powering 150 homes and is still in operation today. Memorial Day is a holiday weekend celebrated with gatherings of friends and family.  Barbecues and outdoor get togethers are a welcome beginning to summer vacations. But the day is meant for a different celebration.  Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a dedication to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy the freedom that is so well known around the world.    Some of the best speeches about the reason for the holiday are by Ronald Reagan.  This year while contemplating this post, I happened upon a site I had never heard of before, Taps Across America.  Taps Across America is an organization created in 2020, sponsored by Taps for Veterans, founded in 2012.    Taps for Veterans  was formed to provide buglers for veterans memorial services.   Due...

Something is missing!I was contacted and told that one of our twin tins (the only one remaining at the corner of S. Oak and Pleasure) is gone.  The site looks like this.  I did a blog about the twin tins several years ago.  So STOP!  Go see this blog.  https://activerain.com/droplet/8XvDDon't they look like twins? Now go to this blog about one of them being made beautiful. https://activerain.com/droplet/l7KzA Searcy resident bought the twin on the North side of Pleasure and was making it beautiful.Alas!  It is gone! It has not been demolished but moved across the street to have continued use and history.  It now looks this way and is being further improved.  Now one last look.  Go here https://activerain.com/droplet/rCpS to see how this building once looked before being made beautiful an...

Carlsbad Art Wall May 2023 The 2nd Carlsbad Art Wall mural of 2023 was completed last weekend by visual artist Ricky Watts. Watts was born in San Francisco and works out of his Northern California studio. This is the 35th mural since the Carlsbad Art Wall was founded. We’ve seen some amazing diversity, creativity and beauty over the years. The colors are vibrant, particularly in contrast to the May Gray day yesterday.  The #CarlsbadArtWall was founded by well-known Carlsbad artist, Bryan Snyder, in 2015. This on-going project is in cooperation with the owner of Senor Grubby’s Mexican Restaurant in Carlsbad Village. Bryan also founded the Carlsbad Alley Art Wall, among other art projects in Carlsbad. The Carlsbad Art Wall gives residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy temporary pub...

My deepest condolences to all who have lost family members, loved ones, friends, and other soldiers in battle for which this day is set aside to honor and remember. Today is Memorial Day 2023 and I get annoyed by the many blog posts who insult my intelligence by trying to explain to me the meaning of Memorial Day, or people who write articles about the history lessons related to "Decoration Day," and all the quotes that are not new about war from people who never fought in the war, or those who did serve in the Military but were never sent to war.  This is Kevin Power's Non-Fiction story. After serving in the war in Iraq in 2004 and 2005, Kevin went back to school at the University of Texas, Austin and studied creative writing and poetry. He wrote "Yellow Birds," published in 2012, and ...

Memorial Day 2023 - Honoring America's Fallen Heroes Memorial Day transcends mere leisure, extending beyond a weekend respite, a feast, or an escape to the beaches. It stands as a reverent occasion, a solemn tribute to the valiant warriors who selflessly laid down their lives for their nation. Memorial Day embodies a moment of collective remembrance, honoring the courageous souls who made unimaginable sacrifices to safeguard our liberties.  As Monday dawns, let us unite in unwavering homage to those who never returned, an eternal devotion that should permeate every single day of our existence. This sacred juncture compels us to reflect upon the immeasurable cost of our freedom, borne by the indomitable spirit of those who paid the ultimate price. This Memorial Day, please take the time ...

Memorial Day…Words Are Not Enough I know this is a busy time and there are countless Memorial Day posts to read, so if you do nothing else while visiting my post, I hope you’ll watch this video made by Alejandro Villanueva…  This weekend many of us have been spending time with friends and family members…celebrating the end of the school year and the beginning of summer. However, let us not forget that this precious time we have been given is due in part to the many sacrifices over the years of those who defended our country and our way of life at the cost of their own.   This is the day we pay homage to all those who didn’t come home. This is not Veterans Day, it’s not a celebration, it is a day of solemn contemplation over the cost of freedom.Tamra BoltonMen and women who will never ge...

Originally known as Decoration Day, it was a day that organized women’s groups left flowers on the graves of our soldiers who valiantly served Our Country. In 1971 this day was changed to Memorial Day and a day we honor and remember our fallen American soldiers. Take a few minutes to reach out to our servicemen and women to thank them for their sacrifices that are real and permanent.    God Bless America! This also is the unofficial start of the summer!

Memorial Day: Honoring Casualties of WarUnited States Army Sergeant Robert Edwin Graves served valiantly in the Korean War and is still unaccounted for. Here is the story:In late November 1950, the 5th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 1st Cavalry Division were ambushed by massive counteroffensive by Chinese Communist Forces along the Chongchon River in North Korea. Under intense pressure, the U.S. lines began to fall back putting some units in danger of being encircled. On November 28, the 1st and 2nd Battalions and Headquarters units of the 5th Cavalry were forced to quickly withdraw from the town of Pongmyong-ni in the face of continuous overwhelming attacks by the Chinese Communist Forces .
