Here is Florida it is all for aesthetics. California; a fireplace would be nice in the winter even in San Diego.

Up here, unless you have wood on your acreage, it tends to be a bit costly to buy.  Most homes have natural gas or propane fireplaces which can be used to heat the room you're in if you don't want to turn the furnace on and heat the entire house.  Our electric/hyrdo costs have gone thru the roof and make it VERY difficult to sell a home that has electric heat.

Aesthetics.

For supplemental heat we open the shades or light a candle.

Statements like that will be hugely irritating in Jan and Feb.

Housing still available for a few good people in Florida.

William Feela  I like electric baseboard strips - I have it in my basement.

It is used only when needed - so no major impact on electric bill.

Wood-burning insert. Definitely helps heat home and saves on oil heat, especially if you have your own wood.

Our region's electrical rates are the cheapest in the nation, so any other source of heat is for:
Back-up in case of an outage.
Ambiance for those who prefer a wood or gas fireplace

Also, "real chefs" like gas stoves, in spite of the higher cost

When we  lived up in the Bay area mountains, our main source of heat was wood. During our residence in Spokane, our source of heat was radiant floor heating and  wood burning.

Now that we are in Southern California, our main source of heat is a hot cup of cocoa and extra blankets...it does not get cold here.

radiant steam and I have seen some floor warmers but that is more for confort than actual heat.  Living in the desert, heating bill is not much of a concern . There are years where we never turn on the furnance.  Nice huh?  Our AC bills usually cost the savings difference during the summer months.

Older homes here is Vegas have fireplace and most newer homes use electric. Ive always been a fan of a wood burning fireplace specially around Christmas it ads a little something to it.
