There is a little white church in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is not easy to find. It requires driving to a remote area of the park and then a two mile hike to get there. But when one arrives at the Little Cataloochee Church, one is immediately transported to a simpler time that revolved around faith, community, and a deep understanding that life is what it is, and you must work your way through it. This oasis of tranquility in the middle of nowhere is a testament to those that went before us and that endured the struggle of survival against nature and all odds, and yet took time out to thank their Creator for all that they had. Horace Kephardt, in “Our Southern Highlanders,” referred to the region as the “Land of Do Without." So even though our times may be troubled, ...

I have heard of the The Sweet Onion, located in Waynesville NC, since my move to North Carolina, and last fall when I was in the area I decided I had to try it. There are nothing but rave reviews about this great eatery, and I have to say it was worth the side trip. The building is amazing. An older building, it has been restored and I have a feeling looks better than it ever has. It has a warm and cozy feel with beautiful wood, soft colors and great artwork everywhere.   I found the staff to be very helpful. I was on my way home and wanted to get something I could eat in the car. They helped me pick several items, and all were a great hit with me! My only regret was that I did not have enough time to really sit in the building and experience the ambiance for a longer period of time....

I was not aware until the other day that Ceviche’s on Main in Downtown Waynesville, NC, was open for breakfast, 7 days per week. My experiences (2) at Ceviche’s have been good (I tend to pick their Italian menu items which have been delicious), and I am looking forward to trying goodies from their breakfast menu soon. Breakfast with free WiFi sounds good to me! Last week I spent a few hours in the Frog Level area of Waynesville while I was waiting to have my oil changed. The oil change was the perfect excuse to have coffee again at Panacea Coffeehouse, and to walk the downtown streets without worrying about slipping on ice for a change. Courtesy: Bob Grytten (right front) Enjoyed several cups of coffee with my photography teacher, Bob Grytten, in Frog Level (Waynesville) the other day at Panacea Coffee House. Click here to go to Bob Grytten’s Photography Website/Blog. You can keep up with Bob’s scheduled classes, wisdom, tips, etc., on his site ~ a gold mine of good stuff. I noticed that Panacea added a great big rack (you can see it in the distance in the photo) full of their fresh, delicious coffee beans. Met a good friend, Brent Ivey, at Panacea Coffee House yesterday afternoon for coffee while doing errands in Waynesville. These photos were taken from the back of Panacea which is along a beautiful creek. There's a nice deck to sit on and enjoy the outside air when the weather is a bit warmer. Snuck into Blue Ridge Osondu Books & Cafe to see how the ‘new,’ expanded/combined store looked, but my visit was a week or two early. The expansion is evident, but not quite ready; however, it is definitely going to be an even better book store with free wifi, great coffee, and more room. Their cafe menu even includes coffee almost any way you want it (I like an extra shot with whipped), smoothies, and they feature very appetizing local bakery items. Magazines for everyone’s taste line one entire wall, and I even found a magazine I was unfamiliar with but HAD to buy: The Jan/Feb 2010 edition of COWGIRL Magazine. Here is the link for directions and hours of operation for Blue Ridge Osondu Books & Cafe. I took the photos below from the Blue Ridge Osondu Books & Cafe parking lot looking do...

Wouldn't it be great to just hook up your horse to your carriage or your buckboard to go do your errands in town? Waynesville has beautiful farm land, with farmers raising cattle as well as crops. The vintage tractor photo I posted the other day was taken at this same farm property location in Waynesville NC, as were the unique shed photo, and the chicken photos. © Susie Blackmon Related articles by Zemanta Waynesville to Maggie Valley NC Fueled by Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters Caffeine! Lake Junaluska was quite a beautiful sight early several mornings ago as the sun was rising … revealing a frozen white layer that is an unusual occurrence here in Haywood County NC.
