The headlines of the newspapers and news websites say it all.....49 of the 50 states have been hit with snow.  It's even snowing in Rome!  Our state is full of snow in the mountains but here at the coast it is just another day of Paradise! I woke up to a beautiful day of sunshine, blue skies and 70 degree weather here in Encinitas.  What better day then to head to the beach with my husband for a nice long walk.  We parked on Coast Hwy and walked across to the campgrounds and enjoyed the smells of Bull Taco grilling their famous tacos for hungry beachgoers.  It was tough, but we looked the other way and headed down the stairs to the beach. Walking past Swami's, our famous surfbreak, the waves were 8-10 feet at the face and full of local surfers looking to catch the perfect wave.  The set...

Don Doerfler is a master at creating living orchid arrangements. I know, because I met him the other day and saw for myself. His business, Encinitas Orchids, is based at his home in Encinitas, and a visit to his showroom is a visual treat. Not only are the orchids spectacular, but the vessels used to create the living orchid arrangements (e.g., antique Chinese wood boxes, ceramics) add to their beauty.  And Don's talent for creative use of color and visual imagery as an artist is immediately obvious in the stunning living orchid arrangements he creates.  The orchids will generally last for months, but you can have a perpetual arrangement and be a perpetual customer - bring the arrangement back and Don will replace the orchids (the new orchids may be different) for a modest cost so you c...

A coastal city situated in the northern part of the San Diego County at a distance of 25 miles north of San Diego. The largest industry of the city is of ornamental flowers especially poinsettias. The city was incorporated in 1986 by merging of five distinct communities the Old Encinitas, New Encinitas, Olivenhain, Leucadia and Cardiff-by-the-Sea; each of them still maintaining their own charm and flavor. The city is positioned on six miles of the Pacific coastline and houses the Quail Botanical Gardens, which is a great place to visit. The beaches of Encinitas are amazing and there are several beaches that stretch from Cardiff-by-the-Sea to La Costa. There are a number of surfing contests held every year in the city. Encinitas has everything that you would like for living, excellent fa...

November 10th, 2009 Understanding the foreclosure property auction (also known as Trustee Sale) process takes time, due diligence, and understanding.  Saavy Real Estate investors can find some of the best deals around buying at these auctions, but is it right for everyone?   We would like to help explain further about these auctions and the benefits and downsides of buying Real Estate at them. In previewing homes for sale, I see exercise equipment in all kinds of stages and uses:  turned into a clothes hanger, used as a play-gym for kids, buried under piles of seen-on-tv gadgets, and cob-webbed in the garage.  If you were to ask the owner, "Does your new EXERCISE MACHINE make you SKINNY?" they would have to respond NO.  Because an exercise machine, whether assembled or in the box, cannot MAKE anyone exercise.  To get "SKINNY", or in shape, the user must USE the machine!! Often I am asked, "Does online networking make you money?"  And I have to say NO.  Having a Facebook page, setting up a Linkedin profile, and joining ActiveRain do not earn income.  Any more than attending a local Chamber of Commerce meeting earns income.  Any more than buying an exercise machine makes me ski...

Gone are the days of the "Singlewide", "Doublewide", trailer talk. "Today's Factory Built Housing" is here to stay. Be they Manufactured, Modular, PreFab, Component stacked et. al. it's a whole new ball game. I had a rather challanging, eventful and even fun-filled experience with many AR members this past year regarding the differences between site (stick) built and "Factory Built" housing so I have decided to make it my mission in '10 to educate as best I can our intimate little community.  This is the first of many articles I intend to share with the AR community about my career and experiences in this facinating and ever growing industry. Every unit is equipped with all the creature comforts and amminities you could ever hope to have in site built construction and more.   This is a ...

El Camino Real in Encinitas, California - The Shopping Corridor El Camino Real, the "King's Highway," in a main thoroughfare running from Oceanside south to Cardiff. The road, which roughly parallels the ocean, is a good alternative to commuting on the 5 freeway during rush hour as there is less traffic, although you have to deal with stop lights.  El Camino Real takes you through residential and agricultural areas as well as several significant shopping areas, the best and most diverse being the El Camino Shopping Corridor in Encinitas (from Encinitas Boulevard north to Leucadia Boulevard).  Folks living in South Carlsbad, West San Marcos, and Encinitas (including Olivenhain), Rancho Santa Fe, and Cardiff have easy access to this several mile stretch of shopping nirvana. I was out touring homes and taking photos and realized that these  will be the LAST photos of the year 2009, and I suppose the decade. These photos were taken at Grandview Beach in Leucadia (Encinitas), a favorite place to visit which always makes me think about that I really enjoy about being here - great weather, palm trees, the ocean, and wonderful views. I hope YOU enjoy them too, wherever you are! I want to wish all my ActiveRain friends...those I know and those yet to come...the happiest of New Year's Eves and Best Wishes for 2010.

Leucadian resident and environmental artist, Kirkos, will be drawing his annual labyrinth on the sands just north of Moonlight Beach on New Year's Day.  The event is scheduled from 10am to 5pm and is a great relaxing and free thing to do in Encinitas.  Bring your family and your out of town guests to witness and join in this yearly meditational walk around the labyrinth. Visitors are asked to park at Moonlight Beach and walk approximately a mile north to the labyrinth.  Guests are invited to bring biodegradable "offerings" such as rocks, rock salt, flowers, etc to the labyrinth.  Please do not bring anything that needs to be picked up!  Kirkos is a long time member of the San Dieguito Art Guild in Encinitas and is dedicating this year's labyrinth to the Guild. Buyers in the Encinitas real estate market seeking oceanfront homes and a substantial budget will undoubtedly explore the Neptune Avenue neighborhood. Neptune Avenue runs along the bluff fronting the ocean, from just north of Moonlight Beach to Grandview Beach at the northern end of Leucadia. Given the location and ocean views (on the west side of the street), prices are a premium, although they have declined quite a bit in the last 4 years. But compared to Del Mar and La Jolla oceanfront, Encinitas waterfront properties are a bargain.  There are 3 major public beach accesses down significant stairs due to the bluff, all of which are popular vantage points for watching surfers and the sunsets - Stone Steps, Beacon's and Grandview.  Homes vary from beach cottages to substantial contempor...

A Video Tour on the Historic Coast Highway 101 Through Leucadia (Encinitas) California Leucadia is a funky, laid-back beach town just south of Carlsbad on the North San Diego County coast, and one of my favorite communities. Leucadia has a long surfing history, and as a seaside community retains much of the feel from days gone by - which most people like about the community. This town is part of Encinitas but with a different feel and look. You won't find high end shopping here, nor 5 star dining (but check out Le Papagayo and Auggie's House of Crab for great eating and atmosphere), and folks like it that way just fine.
