She must have been dunking a donut in the brew to catch the police officer's attention.

to be found guilty of driving distracted, i believe you actually be distracted. i may be wrong, in calif its like driving under the influence, having one sip of beer (one sip) you are not drunk... so whatever they are doing (could be talking to a passenger) that item must have caused you to be distracted to the extent that you drove unsafely.

Sounds like overkill, but maybe she was swerving in officers opinion. Maybe the cop thought he could score a free dooghnut!

No, this is bordering on nuts. If there was no moving violation, a cup of coffee should not be cause for a ticket.

Ticket on Delaware for being on your phone is $106. I don't do it; just know of someone that did.

I hope it was some very good coffee I can't imagine it was that distracting though

That sounds a bit extreme to me. I wonder if I could get pulled over for sipping my iced tea.

Well I hope in Minnesota police officers aren't allowed to any distractions either (coffee, laptops, etc). If that were the case cars in Minnesota shouldn't have a radio, a gps and if we go to that extreme then make cars for only one person so you can't talk to anyone either. Sorry for the sarcasm but drinking coffee while driving should not be a ticketed offense.

I think it's over the top. I was driving this morning as I was sipping my coffee. That simple pleasure shouldn't be taken away from anyone.

I know it seems minor but they do it for our safety. I had a buddy in college get pulled over for having adult relations with his girlfriend while driving. That is a hard ticket to explain to the car insurance agent, I am sure.

Maybe she was driving erratically not handling her coffee well?!

WOW! I understand the law, but next thing you won't be able to listen to the radio

Wow, I would be breaking the law on a daily basis. I don't think that is right. I just got pulled over yesterday in my daughters 1982 AMC Eagle 4X4. It is the only one in the area and I had not yet put the new license plates on. I think the officer just wanted to see the car. He pulled me over because of the Texas tags and Colorado plates. Other than that, I was doing everything correctly. I had already finished my coffee!

William Feela just for drinking coffee? I think that's a bit too much if she was driving fine - within the lane, not speeding or not cutting anyone. Though if it is a law, one should abide by.
Well, I was pulled over once as the office thought my headlights are not working. It was a little bump on road when my light flickered and he thought it's not working. He stopped me and checked three times - himself - that lights are on! My wife was laughing after he left!

So many are still texting during a busy rush hour --- very stupid. I hear today that someone caused a 4 car accident by seeing a spider in her lap. I think I would have too!

They need to focus on the people texting while driving instead. I see this every day, all ages. I saw a woman (maybe in her 80s) last week on the freeway holding up traffic for about a mile, in the fast lane. When I caught up to the car, she was texting on her phone. I could not believe it. Drinking coffee is a little extreme.

I've seen people do worst like have their lap dog on their lap while they drive.

I personally think that all those who did not sip their cup of coffee in their morning commute should be cited...heck, that is definitely a distraction when one is not infused with caffeine.

It would happen here in Los Angeles county as well. Thousands of people are killed every year in crashes attributed to distracted driving, the accidents when the driver took her hands off the wheel, or took her eyes off the road. It can be: using a cell, drinking, eating, applying makeup, adjusting a radio stations or GPS, etc.

I have often thought of how bad the laws are that allow us to eat a full meal, dip fries into ketchup and unwrap burgers without it being a ticket. This is far more distractive than answering a phone. I have seen where kids have been restricted from listening to the radio on their license after another ticket.
