I think it is all done with a flue within a liner now. They try to direct vent it instead of going the old flue route up the chimney.
There was something about this on Homes on Holmes once where the peoples basement fireplace was actually killing them & they fixed it on the new install.

Double wall metal flues. Mounting method would vary depending on location of stove. And what Lyn Sims says. Direct vent also works if stove is set against outside wall.

Barbara Todaro - thanks for sharing this information.
Some Pulte/Toll Brothers new constructions have gas fireplace (if there is a gas in the community.)

Hi, Barbara. This is great information. Thanks for sharing. When it comes to venting anything using combustable fuels, have it done the RIGHT way by an expert.

Most fireplaces in my area are now gas ventless. the cost of woodburning fireplaces and building a chimney stack is more. Most buyers don't want to burn wood. So in other words I don't know.

I knew some of this but sure learned a lot more. I've seen plenty of chases but didn't know what they were called. I'll check out our local Too Brothers community

Ask Franklin Planning Department will the EPA allow this retrofit. Next ask the HOA of the townhouse. I don't think you can safely put a flu out on the wood siding with the unit next door being attached, even a Chase is not perfect. Real wood fuel burns so hot - is the chase built from solid concrete inside? As an agent I would not offer recommendations on plans, contractor or safety.

I don't think I'd want to tackle that question without speaking to the Building Department.

Interesting question, I've never ran into this as I deal with New Construction-either electric or natural gas. Looking forward to reading responses. Have a great week everyone! -Justin
