Another tough one to explain. A staple of classical, column-based architecture, "entablature" is the (typically 3) layers of moldings and bands that rest atop the columns. The first is the architrave, which lays across the tops of the columns as support. The middle layer is the frieze, which is often ornamental (imagine the sculpted or engraved scenes of warriors on horseback or chariot on famous structures such as the Parthenon). Above the frieze is the cornice. This layer projects out, creating the overhang and is the layer the pediment would sit upon.

The horizontal , continuous lintel that the pediment sits upon. Seen in Classical architecture, it consists of the architrave, the frieze and the cornice.
Many of these elements, or forms of them, are still in use today; especially in large public buildings, banks and churches.
