The government provides various medical insurance.  For the remainder, I either self-insure or have additional insurance, depending on the particular risk item.

Yes, always.  You have to have it.  I received a card in the mail, which I am supposed to file with tax returns, that requires me to sign and note the health insurance plan I have in place!  It states if no insurance in place a fine of "x" will be added to return.  Ridiculous!

Oh my goodness it has become so complicated.  I have been buying my own health insurance the past 10 years.   I tried to go around the marketplace or exchange but ended up buying thru it.  Only to find out no doctors in Tucson would take the plan.  The plan I had last year, was "too good" and no longer being offered PLUS many doctors would take it either.  I ended up getting Blue Cross Blue Shield as well, it was not the best priced but at least caregivers would accept it.  Next year, I am going thru a broker.  I found out afterwards, even doctors now recommend going thru a broker as it has become that complicated.
