Kahului Harbor, Kahului Maui HIIf you fly to Maui, chances are you'll fly into Kahului Airport, OGG.  Kahului is our main commercial hub, and along with the airport, there's a harbor where maritime shipping happens, and cruise ships stop in.   It's not the most attractive spot on the island, but it's not bad either, and you generally won't find a lot of tourists here. In these pictures you can see the harbor and the West Maui Mountains in the background, forming a beautiful backdrop to the blue sea.  Wailuku is adjacent to Kahului and only a few miles apart, making for a bustling center to the island activities.  Together, Kahului and Wailuku are considered "central" and it's a large part of our real estate market since this is where the island's population is the greatest.Take a look a... 02/20/2023

Maui banks and mortgages.  When it comes to buying a home in Hawaii, we strongly urge you to use a local bank or lender, since some mainland lenders won't fund to Hawaii.  It's an awful feeling to find this out at the last minute, when you're all set to close on a house sale and things go off track due to the lender.  We have good solid banks here, and they can help you get a mortgage to buy a home on Maui.  There are also other lenders ready to help, and I'm happy to give you some names if you need them. Search the Maui MLS for bank owned homes here.Here's the breakdown of how many mortgages the local banks are providing across the state. The Maui County Landfill just implemented a new fee to drop off your household trash, and it's only $3.  It used to be a free service, but I don't think this new fee is too steep. For now they need you to pay in cash, but by October 2017 they plan to accept credit and debit cards.  It's still free at the other locations: Hana (on Maui); Lanai Island; and Molokai Island.  This is kind of big news here, since it was a free service for almost forever.  For a short time a decade or more ago, they started charging $10 which resulted in lots of people just dumping their trash by the roadsides and in the cane fields.  The end result cost the County a lot of money to clean up and they waived the fees until this summer.  I guess they decided $3 is more affordable and every bit helps to cover the... 08/10/2017

Maui's first medical marijuana dispensary finally opens!It's been 17 years since medical marijuana has been legal in the state of Hawaii, and the first dispensary has now been green-lighted to open the doors and sell product to patients.  Two outlets have been licensed to sell cannabis products on the island of Maui, and Maui Grown Therapies has passed all inspections and requirements to offer the dried flower buds for sale.  Other related products are still waiting for the thumb's up from the Hawaii Department of Health.This week they'll handle patients with appointments only, and starting August 14 they'll take walk-in customers.  Business hours are 10:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Saturday.  They are located at 44 Paa St., in Kahului, in the Maui Lani Village Center.  Fred Rickert ... 08/08/2017

We're big fans of the local food truck scene here on Maui, and recently we found 2 more new food trucks in Kahului, in the parking lot at Home Depot!  It seems that this trend just keeps getting better, and it's getting hard to decide where to eat these days.Gyros is the name of the new Mediterranean food truck, so of course we had to try it first.  The beef/lamb gyros sandwich on soft pita bread was a winner - so tasty and fresh with tangy tzatziki sauce all over it.  Just the right amount for lunch, and only $9.00 which is decent here on the island.  Other menu items include: Greek salad, hummus, moussaka, chicken skewer plate, gyro plates, dolmas, and other traditional Mediterranean foods.Pua'a is the other truck, which specializes in BBQ pork, chicken and beef, with pua'a being the ... 08/01/2017

This year's Art of Trash event at the Maui Mall showcased some very creative artwork put together from trash and junk that would otherwise end up in the landfill, or as beach debris.  I noticed a recurring theme of plastics in our ocean, which has become a monumental global pollution problem. The long awaited new Airport Access Road has opened in Kahului Maui and it's ready for business, as of July 23, 2016.  This makes it a lot easier to get to the airport, no matter what part of the island you're coming from, but especially from the north shore and upcountry, it will be the first road on your right as you approach Kahului.  If you're coming from south or west Maui, it's get's a little different where Kuihelani Hwy meets Dairy Road, near the Harley Davidson shop.  That's where it veers off and becomes the Airport Access Road.They're still working out the signage though, so it helps if you know your way around on the previous roads, otherwise it could be a little confusing.  Kahului Airport Access Road from Georgie Hunter on Vimeo.Watch this short video to get an idea of how... 08/28/2016

Food Trucks near the airport on Maui.When you're in Kahului Maui and ready for a quick lunch, there's a food truck court closeby.  You can find the entrance off Haleakala Highway, across from the Costco gas station.  591 Haleakala Highway that is.  Lots of free parking!When we went last week three food trucks were operating and we chose the one selling fresh raw and cooked fish... Like Poke?  Because we saw this truck featured on the TV show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, we made a point of finding it.  Since it was sort of late, the menu was limited so we settled on the Ahi Katsu plate and the owner made it extra big enough to share, with two scoops of white rice of course!
