Masons Passage is a group of 180 homes at the corner of US 1 and Gunston Road.  They are within 15 minutes of Fort Belvoir.  There are 90 detached homes and 90 townhomes.  They were built in the period 1999 to 2,000 making them relarively new. They are also within 15 minutes of the Lorton VRE station making them very attractive to folks commuting to the Pentagon or Washington, D.C.  See schedules and system map for VIRGINIA RAILWAY EXPRESS Additionally, Masons Passage homes are aptly named - they are at the gateway to Mason Neck, the water oriented Lorton community with public golf, boat launch and storage, pool, camping, bike paths and a major national wildlife refuge.  See LORTON STATION and INLET COVE  FIND LORTON HOMES   FIND FAIRFAX COUNTY HOMES   CONTACT THE KRUSCHKA TEAM   Planni...

When the Virginia Rail Express (VRE) first began operations along the I-95 corridor in 1992 there were questions as to whether the lack of housing near the train stations would derail the long term plans for the commuter rail. Since that time a new supply of "whistle stop" towns has sprung up close to the tracks including Lorton Station and Belmont Bay. The train has also made the older community of the Town of Occoquan take on a new life as well. Lorton Station was built around the Stream Valley Park a 100 acre site that is dedicated to the founder of Lorton, Joseph Plaskett. A biking and walking trail runs through the park adding a great touch of green space to the community. With a variety of condos, townhouses and detached homes within a mile of the train station buyers can find a n...

Very few people are aware of the fact there is close-in cabin camping in Northern Virginia.  Pohick Bay Regional Park has excellent facilities.  The cabins have electricity, air conditioning, heat and two rooms. As can be seen in the photo below the room at the back of the cabin has a double bed and a set of bunk beds. The front room has a futon, table, two chairs and a microwave. Outside is a front porch with a swing, outside grill, fire pit and a picnic table. Although there is no bathroom in the cabins, a bathhouse is a short walk on a trail. You must bring your own beddingbring own bedding.   In all my 30+ years driving around Northern Virginia as a real estate broker I have taken my camera (even before digital) and recorded those scenes I thought would be of some later use.  Last year I snapped the picture above of an old Lorton property located at the corner of Old Colchester and Gunston Roads.  At one time it was probably a gas station, neighborhood store or a combination of both.  Over the years it has even been occupied as a residence.  I recall seeing Big Wheels parked under the covered entry before it was fenced over and boarded up.  Obviously, I've always wondered what would be built on that busy corner.   Last week as I was in Lorton on business I passed the old building, came to a halt and snapped the picture on the left.  It is obvious they removed the covered e...

Lorton Station is a 300 acre subdivision of 950 newer homes just South of Fort Belvoir.  Detached homes and town homes are available and, yes, it is within 15 minutes of the entrance to Fort Belvoir.  Additionally, it is only 15 miles south of Washington, D.C. - the Lorton entrance to and exit from I-95 is just outside the community on Lorton Road.  On those occasions when you need to go to the Pentagon the VRE Lorton Station is in the community.  Take a Northbound train, change to the Metro Blue Line at King Street and go to the Pentagon Station. Kids attend Lorton Station Elementary and, depending on where you live, they will attend either South County Secondary or Hayfield Secondary. Two shopping centers, Lorton Station Marketplace and Lorton Station Town Center provide a full ran...

Mason Neck, that section of Lorton with water on 3 sides is a natural wonderland.  The peninsula consists of 9,000 acres - 6,000 of which are under land management.  As a result, it is now home to 200 species of birds, 31 mammals and 44 species of reptiles and amphibians. Its' most famous landowner was George Mason, an author of the Virginia Bill of Rights, a predecessor of the US Constitution.  His home, Gunston Hall, is open to visitors. In 1969, the Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge was the first park assigned as an American Eagle refuge.  It is considered one of the Top Ten US Sites for Eagle Sightings. The bicycle path starts just east of Old Colchester Road on the north side of Gunston Road.  It passes Pohick Bay Public Golf Club, Pohick Bay Regional Park, Gunston Hall and winds...

Inlet Cove is just 1 mile south of the main gate of Fort Belvoir between the Fairfax County Parkway and Telegraph Road.  Yes, it adjoins the southwestern section of Fort Belvoir. It is a 40 acre planned community with 148 detached homes and 108 town homes.  There is a pool, clubhouse, tot lot, playground and interconnecting walkways in the community.  When you pull out of the subdivision onto the Richmond Highway you are literally looking at the trees of the southern Section of Fort Belvoir.  The trees of the post are on your left and right as you drive north. Not going to Fort Belvoir?  Perhaps you're headed to DC - piece of cake!! Hop in the car, go south to the VRE Lorton Station (less than 10 minutes) and catch a train - 40 minutes to L'Enfant Plaza.  See the schedule at VIRGIN...

Initially, the Lorton correctional facility was supposed to house prisoners in an environment where fresh air and hard work would enhance inmate rehabilitation.   As a result, much of the more than 3,000 acres was used for the production of beef, dairy products and vegetables.  Additionally, many of the compound's brick buildings were built by inmates.  More than 6 years would pass from the time the prison was closed in 1998 until title was passed to Fairfax County and public and private development could be started.  The new South County Secondary School opened in 2006.  It is conveniently located near the residential subdivisions.  Secondary schools in Virginia contain both middle school and senior high school populations.  The 18 Laurel Hill Golf Course and club house is operated by ...

Last fall I jokingly posted a picture and wondered what was for sale the house or the dune buggy.  It was of course the dune buggy.  The house was actually the old Country Store on Gunston Road and it is now being restored.  The store went through a number of changes over the course of its history including being a Cracker Barrel in 1987.   However the history of the store goes back much further and based on descriptions in local historical records it may originally have been the Church Vestry for the original Pohick Church now the site of Cranford Methodist Church.   This would indicate that the house could have been built in the late 1700’s.   Starting in the mid 1800’s the home underwent a number of renovation projects which altered the original look of the building and eventually t...

For over 100 years Lorton was an area that most residents of Northern Virginia went out of their way to avoid.   As a prison complex the 3,200 acre site was huge and at night driving by the area the signs warning you not to pick up anyone on the road were ominous.  When the facility was ordered closed in 1998, Fairfax County began planning in earnest with what to do with the land and buildings that made up the infamous prison.  In 2002 Fairfax County officials received title to 2400 acres and the re-development of the property began. Multiple neighborhoods were carved out of the grounds, along with parks, schools, golf course, arts center and future equestrian center.  The largest of the neighborhoods, Laurel Hill has 700 homes built by Pulte or Centex Homes.  In addition to Laurel Hill...

What do you do when an old prison closes?  in Northern Virginia  former jail cells will soon open as artist studios.  Where prisoners may have written graffiti on the walls or counted down the days until their release you will find studios filled with artists who specialize in ceramic, glass, fiber and oil painting to name a few. With great planning by Fairfax County in 2002 many of the original prison buildings, many which were constructed by prisoners making bricks right on the grounds, have been saved and renovated to accommodate the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center.  With its grand opening looming workers are moving at full speed to make sure that everything is ready.  During the Occoquan River Festival over 400 people toured some of the finished empty spaces to give local residents a s...
