Christmas Eve In Old Town Albuquerque This Christmas Eve in Old Town Albuquerque Debbie, Dixie Dawg and I enjoyed strolling around enjoying the abundance of festive sights and sounds.  The crisp night air and glowing luminaries gave the true feel of Christmas in the high desert.We enjoyed the 55 foot Christmas Tree in the center of Old Town Plaza.  The carolers sang beautiful Christmas songs.  We enjoyed the reenactment and live nativity scene.  Kids were thrilled with the hands on petting zoo.  Sounds of  live music drifted around Old Town as we meandered through the plaza square, alleys and backstreets. The (real) Mexican food restaurants were busy serving delicious New Mexico favorite meals.  Of course coffee and cocoa were readily available on many of the street corners.  Mass was h... 12/25/2012

Luminaria the Spanish word for Lamp.This wonderful New Mexico tradition is Christian in nature with the idea that the small lamps or Luminaries would light the way for Joseph and Mary as they made their way to the stable and the birth of Jesus Christ.  Originally the lamps were placed only on Christmas Eve but you will most often see the Luminaries through the Christmas season.The Luminaries are simply a votive candle set inside a brown paper bag weighted with sand and placed in a row with others along a walkway, driveway, or rooftop as a holiday decoration.  The nightly job of lighting and maintaining the candles is all part of the experience, windy nights can play havoc as paper bags go up in flames.  For that reason the modern versions are often electric or battery powered.
