Green Cove Springs hosted a Memorial Day Festival today in Spring Park. The activities took place behind City Hall in the riverfront Park. Green Cove Springs was founded in the 1800s as a popular tourist destination. When the railroad extended to Miami, the town lost its tourist base, but the sleepy town is poised for growth when the real estate market turns. The Parade of Flags was a sober reminder of the sacrifice of the brave men and women we remember today who gave their all in defense of freedom. Last weekend Spring was ushered in with a Young Eagles Fly-in at Haller's Airfield. Magnolia Point Golf & Country Club in Green Cove Springs, Florida is a lovely community just off Highway 17 as you cross Governor's Creek bridge. Magnolia Point was developed in the 1980s. It was the second guard-gated golf and country club in the area, following the popular Ravines Golf & Country Club. Both courses were designed by Mark McCumber of Ponte Vedra Beach. I remember when Magnolia was brand new and seemed so far out! Now it's just down the road since Fleming Island was developed.   Welcome to our Charming small town.   The City of Green Cove Springs    The area was first settled in the mid 1800's and was called White Sulfur Springs. The spring in the mid 1850's made the area a tourist destination, as some believed the warm sulfur waters were medicinal. What a fun time we had visiting the vendors, eating scrumptious Bar-B-Q and curly fries and watching the parade! It was honestly like stepping back to my childhood. Here are some photos of the activities in and around Walnut Street in Green Cove Springs FL yesterday. Frank and I enjoyed visiting with Sherry Faye who was helping her daughter run a booth for her Flower and Gift shop on Highway 16. We tried to convince her to buy one of our historic listings! Either one would be perfect for their shop.         There were dozens of booths with home  made crafts, art work, jewelry and food. There is a $50 fee to reserve a space for the day.
