The First ThankgivingBecause of what they learned in elementary school, most Americans probably associate Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims in Massachusetts in 1621. Less well know outside Virginia is the fact that more than a year earlier, a hardy band of Englishmen landed at Berkeley Hundred on the James River and held the real first Thanksgiving. Captain John Woodlief and thirty-seven men sailed from Bristol, England, on the ship Margaret and reached Berkeley Hundred nearly three months later in December 1619. They marked their deliverance from the stormy north Atlantic with a simple service of thanks to God.Click here to learn much more about the first Thanksgiving in Virginia.  Chrysanthemums, Kentlands Photowalk, Gaithersburg, Maryland USA IMG 6283Canon PowerShot G11 CameraPhotograph...

Friday Fun…What’s On Your Menu? When I read that Martha Stewart canceled her Thanksgiving, I thought…hmmmm she may be onto something!!! Nine of her guests canceled due to illness, and since Martha has already cooked 14 turkeys for her show, she is turkeyed out! ** I may remember this for next year! We’re not cooking that many turkeys but we’re busy planning for about 30 guests this year.  What’s on your menu for Thanksgiving??? Will you prepare all or most of the dinner?  What is the one dish you most look forward to having? While I’m not a vegetarian, I don’t eat that much meat. I’m looking forward to mashed potatoes, dressing, and gravy. (Love my carbs!)  **By the way… Martha won’t miss Thanksgiving. She’s invited to five friend’s homes to “taste different courses.”  Can you imagine ho...

About 37 years ago.My mother-in-law, Wyndelene Holmes Duncan, got this hand-done birthday card from me.  I had forgotten that I did it but it just popped up a few days ago.  We all called her Winnie but she preferred the real version of her name.  She is also part of Searcy's history.  She grew up on Holmes Road in Searcy and that family is why the name is Holmes Road.  There is still a big old rock house on the side of the hill.  Click https://activerain.com/droplet/4Wqt for the picture of it a long time ago.  Ms. Winnie, as we called her, was a wonderful and caring person.  She married V. W. Duncan, car dealer whose motto was, "What ole PoDunk says it is, it is!!"  He was a super salesman and built a successful car dealership that grew from used cars to new Chryslers, Plymouths and Je...

As we age, taking care of ourselves and staying fit becomes even more important. It is not only about maintaining your body but also about stimulating your brain.A few weeks ago, I went to my doctor for my Annual Wellness Visit. In addition to the routine vital signs like blood pressure and weight (which is always too high), my doctor tests for other abnormalities. She checks my heart rate, my breathing, and my reflexes. Before we finish my exam, she always challenges me to prove my fitness by asking me to lie down flat on the exam table. She then asked me to try and sit up without using my arms or locking my legs. I think it surprises her when I pass the test with flying colors. One of these days she will win the challenge.Getting a good report makes me grateful that I have been bless...

Who Would Like to Raise Your Hand and Be First?  Yes, Virginia!   The first successful Electric Streetcar was invented in 1888. Our list of impressive things invented in Virginia begins with the first electric streetcar. After 74 attempts around the world to create a proper electric trolley railway system, we finally nailed it in Richmond. In 1888, The Union Passenger Railway was the first electric railway system be more efficient than animal-powered trolleys. It was considered a milestone in engineering by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and set the stage, or laid the tracks rather, for future railway trolleys.  The first fraternity in the United States was founded at William & Mary in 1776.   The first formal fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, was created at the College ...

I have spent years vacationing and part-time living on Maui, Hawai'i. Whenever I'm there, inevitably people in service, neighbors and strangers will say "Aloha!" (hello, goodbye, love)or "Mahalo" (thank you). I never get pissed off and yell back - "I'm not Hawai'ian!". In fact I accept it as their culture being shared with me, they are greeting me in their own way. "When in Rome".Between Halloween and New Year's Day, we're in the Holiday Season - something like 14 different holidays are celebrated in Q4. If somebody says Happy Holidays to me I'll typically reply with the appropriate holiday greeting I celebrate, for instance: "Happy Thanksgiving" in November, "Merry Christmas" in December and "Happy New Year" post-Christmas. Much like "Aloha" I'm greeting and sharing with them, what I c...

Thanksgiving is one of the most popular and beloved holidays in the United States. It’s a time to gather with family and friends, enjoy a feast of turkey and other traditional dishes, and express gratitude for the blessings of the past year. But how much do you know about the history and meaning of this holiday? In this blog post, we’ll explore the origins and evolution of Thanksgiving, as well as some of the controversies and challenges that it faces today.HistoryThe first Thanksgiving is commonly associated with the Pilgrims and Native Americans who celebrated a successful harvest in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621. We moved to Arizona just about a year ago and we are really enjoying our new community, PebbleCreek.  It is different to live in the desert, but it has been fun to learn about our new environment.  We see quail and rabbits all of the time.  Those bunnies do love to eat our new plants! The quail are just plain goofy and make us laugh.  We also see the occasional roadrunner, another bird that proves God has a sense of humor.  Coyotes also make an appearance from time to time. A few days ago, was the best surprise of all, though.  We were driving our golf cart, on our way to play pickleball, when we spotted what we thought was a big kitty cat.  We followed it and watched it saunter through the neighborhood.  It was a bobcat and it was beautiful! This is the kind of kitty that you do not get...

Perspective, after a VERY busy day.... built a horse shelter in the morning, painted the inside of the garage on the home we are building, then off to a showing, and finishing with a listing appointment....  my husband had an equally packed day.  Hubby is usually our very creative cook, and he truly cares about WHAT we eat, but tonight he offers, can we drive to town (25minutes) and have corn dogs and a root bear float for supper.  I have NO idea why this sounded like a good idea and I'm equally shocked that it ended up being the VERY BEST idea.  We enjoyed conversation as I drove us to supper (he loaned his truck to a neighbor who doesn't have an operational vehicle so they borrow my husbands truck to go to town once a week to do shopping, laundry, etc.) we enjoyed sitting in the gas ...

Gratitude Challenge 2023…for Gadgets, Gizmos and Devices When my friends were wishing for Barbies, ponies, and princess houses, I wanted a Dick Tracy watch. However, I  wanted one that actually worked!  This was long before April 2015 when the Apple watch was introduced! I waited over 50 years for it!! (and by the way…talking into your wrist is highly overrated!)   I am grateful that I’ve been able to enjoy all of the wonderful gadgets, gizmos, and devices that make my life fun, often easier, sometimes frustrating, and help keep my world interesting.  But a few that I am grateful for… Fitness Bands…I’ve had a Fitbit for years and still have one. Remember when they suggested we get in 10,000 steps a day?  This is how I kept track. In fact, I’ve been known to go out at 11 pm and walk just...

I don't remember the last time I was truly tongue tied but it certainly happens from time to time. Lucky for me it usually happens around the family dinning table and not at a podium somewhere like the Toastmasters events I used to attend. Also lucky for me it never happened during a podcast either. Of course if it did I could edit that as very few of my podcasts were live. Do you have any good stories of being tongue tied?
