I have been sharing recently about remodels, designs, furniture, flooring, and cabinets and decided to get someone who knows more about those subjects than I do.  I arranged for Ruth Dyer of Finishing Touch to stop by so we could hear from an expert.  Ruth has been an interior decorator in The Villages the past 20 years and writes a weekly column in the local newspaper the Daily Sun.In my interview with her we discussed trends in colors, furniture, how things are always changing.  She shared some tips about kitchen remodels, backsplashes, countertops to help brighten the kitchen.  Ruth is a great source for those moving to Florida and trying to decide what to bring and whether it will fit and look right.Check out her website: www.ruthdyer.com Email her: Ruth@FinishingTouchFL.com Call he...

The Summer Solstice begins on June 20, 2025. What end of spring thoughts comes to your mind? Off the top of my head, I can think of three: malfunctions, repairs, and renovations.  I can work in my garden. I can call for contractor estimates now for repairs in the Fall. I can compare and contrast immediate needs and costs for renovations. Worthy of DisplayA garden is worthy of display. Now is the time to get busy. The seasons of Spring and Summer goes by so fast. The house where we live is always on display, whether it is on the market for sale or not. Curb appeal makes a difference in how people see the way we live when they pass by. Our minds are naturally filled with curiosity. For strangers and people who pass frequently the proof is in what they see. Remember: Whether it is landscap...

A couple weeks ago I noticed my neighbor was getting a new roof, this is very common in The Villages with the age of some of the homes.  After the old asphalt roof was removed I noticed the workers installing some sort of metal edging thought that’s different.  Turns out they were installing a metal roof, not maybe what you picture as long panels rather the metal roof looks like asphalt shingles.  I watched the process from my lanai and one day I asked the neighbor about the roof installation.  It was approved by Architectural Review Committee and the cost is about twice the price of an asphalt shingled roof. What are the pros of a metal roof?   Metal roofs are built to last with a life expectancy of between 50 to 70 years. They are also low maintenance, requiring occasional inspection a...

This article provided by Kindal Glasgow, Realtor a member of The Betts TeamA few weeks ago, I wrote about the construction process of adding a pool to our pre-owned home here in The Villages.  We had a small lanai that we removed to create a larger space for the pool and spa.  When deciding on the type of lanai roof style we wanted to build over our new space, I looked around at the different styles I saw in The Villages.  The most popular styles:Mansard- has a level midsection and sloping sides.Gable - A-frame style with two sides meeting at a peakDome - A curved roof designWe ended up choosing the dome-shaped roof for our lanai, mostly because I liked the look of it.  It does have some advantages, including increased wind resistance, a spacious feel, and attractive aesthetics.  The ro...

Home inspections can bring up all kinds of surprises—and one of the biggest? The foundation. As a real estate agent, you don’t need to be a contractor, but having a basic understanding of concrete foundations helps you spot common issues, explain them clearly, and keep deals moving forward. As a sequel to the last blog, let’s break down what’s normal, what’s not, and how to talk about it without raising alarm bells. What a Concrete Foundation Actually DoesThink of a home’s foundation like a good pair of boots—it supports everything on top and keeps it standing tall through all kinds of weather. Whether it’s a slab, crawl space, or basement, the foundation is what keeps a home safe, level, and dry. Most foundations settle a little over time, which is totally normal. What matters is knowing...

The tenant in my rental property will be moving out at the end of the month.   From past conversations and visits for repairs, I know the carpet will have to be replaced.  But what do you do with the old carpet?  It's typical to toss carpet in the landfill, but there has to be a better way.  Can carpet and the padding be recycled?   As the landlord and owner of this rental home, it's my responsibility to refund the security deposit within 14 days per Arizona tenant laws.  To do that, I'll be reviewing the home's condition and every system and component inside and outside of the home.  I already know of some drywall damage, carpet damage, and overall wear and tear from this tenant.  And to get this home into market ready condition, the carpet is already scheduled to be replaced.   I will...
