As we in the United States are waking up to the end of cheap oil, many are starting to reevaluate how we get around. Around Monroe, we saw many more bicycles out this summer, and we noticed that the Badger State Trail going through Monroe had a great deal of pedestrian and bicycle traffic this year.  As more people start using self-propelled transportation, home buyers are starting to pay attention to nearby amenities. What is nearby, what can they walk to? Monroe itself is a highly walkable community. I recently visited Walk Score to check how walkable some of our homes for sale are considered by this index. Now, Walk Score is not perfect; they are missing some of our downtown coffee shops, retail establishments, grocery options. However, it is an interesting glimpse into what is aroun...

As mentioned in my last post, Berghoff and Blues is happening this weekend in conjunction with Cheese Days.   The festival, now in its 11th year, features excellent blues performers and Berghoff Beer, brewed locally by our own Minhas Craft Brewery. Our brewery is the oldest continuously operating brewery in the Midwest, and it turns out wonderful products like Minhas brews, Huber beers including Berghoff and Blumers sodas.   The brewery is open for tours this weekend, as it is most weekends. Come, learn about the brewing process and then stay for some music and refreshments. Concessions stands will be operated by Monroe's Lions Club to raise money for local projects.               The festival schedule this year is as follows: Friday, Sept 19: 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Perry Weber & the Devilles...

Are you ready for some bargains? The annual citywide garage sale in Monroe is scheduled for next Saturday, August 16. The Chamber of Commerce puts together the maps of registered participants. Maps can be picked up at the Chamber (located at 1509 9th St in Monroe) or at the area grocery stores, Piggly Wiggly or Pick’N’Save. There are always unregistered sales as well since the deadline for being on the maps is rather early. Be sure to pick up the Monroe Shopping News or Monroe Times and look at the classifieds for information on these additional sales. Who knows, perhaps you will find that vintage fishing reel you have always been looking for or a first edition book. I can guarantee that there will be children's clothing in abundance and plenty of salt and pepper shakers! Garage sales -...

A recent question asked about the Monroe Main Street Concert on the Square series for this summer. The concerts are on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month this summer. There are two concerts remaining, one on August 14 and one on August 28. The concerts start at 6:30 pm and generally last about 2 hours. I do not have the information on the specific bands right now, but the concert next week will be jazz and one at the end of the month will be bluegrass. Boxed dinners are available at downtown restaurants prior to the concert, and most downtown businesses will be open at least until the beginning of the concert. Please come on downtown for one of the remaining concerts! These are fantastic events that are very popular. Bring your lawn chair, buy some popcorn to support Special O...

Browsing through the Wisconsin Realtor Association website recently, I came across a number of very interesting facts about the current real market in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin real estate market is more stable than many in the nation, and we continue to outperform many states. During 2007, the average home price in Wisconsin remained essentially stable, rising .2 percent. There are areas of declining prices in Wisconsin, but as a rule, home are worth more than they were three years ago, even in the areas of decline. Locally, the statistics show this stability. During the first quarter of 2008 in Green County, 62 homes were sold for an average price of $140,000. During the first quarter of 2007, 67 homes were sold for an average price of $135,300. Slightly lower sale, slightly higher pri...

Monroe Main Street is promoting a new Concerts on the Square series this summer. These concerts were extremely popular last year, and they are back by popular demand. There have been two scheduled for each June, July and August. The first June concert has already happened, but the second takes place tonight. The Stateline Playboys takes the stage on the north side of the Square at 6:30 for a two hour concert with the theme of A Trip Through Rock-and-Roll History. Boxed suppers will be offered by the downtown restaurants, and many of the downtown merchants will be open until 6:30. The July concerts will be on July 10 and July 24. July 10 brings us Saxtet Plus - Best of the Big Band Sound. If you like big band, be sure to come out for this one! They feature five saxophones, six to eight b...

This week's featured property is a commercial building in Monroe. Space, space and more space. If this is what your business needs, come spread out in this commercial building just off of Monroe's downtown square. You will have all the room your business needs with nearly 4500 square feet of commercial space spread out over two floors. The location is superb, just one block off of the square on a busy corner next to the library. Off street parking insures that your customers will always be able to find a spot to park, giving your business an edge over other downtown businesses. Combine this building with the available parking lot across the street for even more parking space if warranted. Updates have been done inside in recent years, including a new furnace, new water heater and more. ...

It is time again for one of the most interesting Monroe area traditions - the annual hot air balloon rally. The four day event runs from June 12 through June 15 this year. Twice a day, weather permitting, the majestic hot air balloons float through the sky on their way towards the fairgrounds. They seems to brush the tops of the trees and houses as they are steered towards the landing targets. Those of us on the ground can sit on our porches, watch for our favorites and listen to the whoosh of the torches. Up to ten balloons will launch at 6 am and 6 pm on Thursday and Friday. Eleven more will come for the weekend, filling our skies with up to 21 balloons. On Friday and Saturday at dusk, the fairground fields will fill with tethered balloons for the traditional balloon glow. It is a bea...

If you are looking for a place for a quick yet satisfying lunch, skip the fast food. Visit to Monroe's Downtown Square and the Garden Deli. The Garden Deli is the perfect spot to grab a quick bite to eat. It takes no longer than the chain fast food joints, yet the food is a world apart. Sandwiches are made to order from fresh ingredients. I am big fan of the turkey with spinach and provolone on whole wheat. They also offer white buns, sourdough, french and croissants for bread choices. Get the sandwiches hot or cold, whatever trips your trigger. In the colder weather, they do a brisk business with their soups and baked potato lunches. The Garden Deli moved to larger quarters a few years ago, and you will understand why if you stop in during lunch time or before downtown events like last...

After the winter that we had here in Wisconsin, summer has seemed a long time in coming. It is nearly Memorial Day weekend, yet we do not dare to put away the long sleeved shirts and light coats just yet. Summer is slowly coming, though, and one sure sign is the opening of the Monroe Farmer's Market. The market opens this Wednesday, May 21. As in other years, the market will run on Wednesday afternoons and on Saturday mornings. Things are expanding at the market this year. Plans are to enlarge the market to three sides of the Square. There also will be Arts Weekends once a month through the summer where the market will feature both artisan goods and performing arts. I know that after a long winter, I am out of Noel's wonderful jams, and I look forward to visiting with all the vendors. I...

Summer means spending time outdoors for many people, and community sporting events are often a popular place to be. There is still time in Monroe to sign the children up for softball, baseball or tennis. The eight week long little girls softball or little league baseball season is only $16 for residents. Adult slowpitch league sign-up is over, but if you contact Park and Rec, perhaps they have a substitution list for you to sign up on. Call Carol at 329-4666. Youth tennis lessons run only $20 for residents. They run in two week sessions either in the first half or second half of July for kids ages first grade through twelfth grade. They are a bargain for ten 55 minute lessons. Adults, consider joining the tennis league or one of the tournaments! Leagues run from mid-June through early A...

Green County is home to many artisan businesses, and one of the tastiest is on the east side of Monroe's downtown Square. Chocolate Temptations is one of the Hidden Gems of Green County. The exterior colors of cafe au lait and bittersweet chocolate hint at the delectable treats awaiting inside. Step through the doors, and the gentle aroma of chocolate and coffee envelope you. The Buol family has been creating gourmet hand-dipped chocolates in Monroe since 1995. Their truffles are exceptional - a domed shell of chocolate encasing a rich, superb blend of cream and chocolate. They offer a wide variety of flavors, each a with its own unique appearance, miniature works of art. My favorite include the caramel, the hazelnut and the cappuccino with a chocolate covered coffee bean perched on top...

Our market is not like some areas of this country. We are dominated by existing home sales, and people can buy a home for under $100K. Our median home sale price in our town is $105K and in our county as a whole is $190K (this includes farms and homes with acreage). I have helped buyers purchase an actual home for as little as $35K, and while it certainly needed work, it was not in tear-down condition. I know a couple of realtors who scoff at the little sales. They prefer to only work with buyers and sellers for homes over $200K. I have head them say that the little sales are much more trouble then they are worth. Now I like working the big sale as much as anyone, but each sale is unique.  While most have me banging my head against a wall at one point or another, I have never had a sale ...
