Well the Holiday season is officially here... At least in our house... Jester was kind enough to let us move his bed temporarily so we would have the best spot for the Christmas Tree... So, we decided that the tree was his... That and a good rawhide chew bone and he seemed good with the deal.By the way, we got a fantastic tree this year... It doesn't get any fresher than when the Christmas Tree farmer cuts it down after you've chosen it... In Skagit County, we have a great Christmas Tree Farm owned by Bob and Billie Dean. It is called the "McLean Road Christmas Tree Farm". Strangely enough it is on McLean Road... To get there, simply cross the West Mt. Vernon Bridge, turn Left at the first Light (Wall Street) and curve around to the right onto McLean Road... It is about 4 blocks past "...

The City of Mount Vernon WA has started a redevelopment plan for its historic downtown & riverfront area.  One of the main goals of this re-development plan is to provide the city's downtown area with 100 year flood protection.  Flooding probability has been a big barrier to the investment and business sector in the downtown area in the past.  Here is the the latest power point presentation outlining the master plan:http://www.ci.mount-vernon.wa.us/imageuploads/Media-2110.pdf For the webpage on City of Mount Vernon's Historic Downtown & Waterfront Redevelopment plan go to:http://www.ci.mount-vernon.wa.us/page.asp_Q_navigationid_E_652

Hi,Maggie and I recently bought some meat at a great local butcher shop...  Andal's Meats. It has been around for years, but we didn't know about it until a couple weeks ago. We bought some fantastic steaks, pork chops, bacon, beef jerky, etc... So far it has all been really great quality stuff and priced fairly for what you get...Most of what they sell is pre-packaged frozen food geared toward buying a good amount of food and then thawing it as needed, so its not a great place to go shop for tonight's dinner - rather all of next month's dinner. Here is an article about Andal's Meats from the folks at Prairie Springs Ranch (they supply the great grass-fed beef!)Here is their contact information...Andal's Meats, Inc.20235 E. Hickox Rd.Mount Vernon, WA 98274(360) 424-5543 Give them a try, y...

Mount Vernon homes are built with comfortable living in mind.  Houses can be found in every style from one week to one century old, providing buyers with a range of options when considering the increasingly popular Mount Vernon homes. Mount Vernon homes are some of the most affordable in the region (at least until the rest of the world discover this gem of a town).   Large, 3-bedroom houses are frequently sold in the mid-$300,000 range, and Mount Vernon homes on acreage, the popular Eaglemont Golf Course, or even the beautiful Skagit River do not cost significantly more.   Since it is generally considered too far to commute to Seattle, buyers are relieved of the Seattle-area prices while still having quick access to the many Skagit, Snohomish, and Whatcom County jobs.   Many residents l...

The Big Lake Area is protected and spported by a Volunteer Fire Department.  First and Foremost.... THANK YOU!!!Now on to business... Each year, the Volunteers host a Fire Works Fundraiser Show on the 3rd of July (as fire fighters are often busy working on the 4th).  This tradition has been going for 44 years!  This year's goal is to get a "Thermal Imaging Camera" and some other Rescue Equipment. So far this year, they have fallen somewhat short of their goal.... Currently the board shows that they only reached about 80% of their donations goal.  People of Mount Vernon, we need to help out a bit more to get the volunteers who put themselves in harm's way to protect us the equipment that they need to do the job safely. Please give if you can!

Last year the city of Mount Vernon started a comprehensive redevelopment plan for its historic downtown area.  The goal of that planning effort is to guide the business investment of public and private resources in the downtown area over a period of the next 20 years. A key issue of this plan is to provide the City's downtown area with 100-year flood protection. The threat of flooding poses a major barrier to investment in the downtown area and limits the City's efforts to create a vibrant, attractive, and safe waterfront district. In addition to flood protection, the project's goals include enhancing public access to the shoreline and river, promoting a mixed use redevelopment that will generate new jobs, providing an area for both housing and business development to occur in a manner ...

Here's another of my favorite places.  The Skagit River Brewery.  This place has a long history in Mount Vernon and has been quenching many thirsty "Skagitonians" for a long time.  Go to http://www.skagitbrew.com  and check out the menu.  I have to take a little time to blow my own horn.....About 12 years ago I was working at the brewery during it's remodel and transformation into a great brew pub.  I was initially hired on as sous chef, but took over to oversee the development of a new kitchen and menu.  Through a lot of hard work and close attention to Charlie's taste buds I think we all contributed to a really good menu.  I'm proud to see that some of my favorite menu items are still going strong and I can assure you that the quality has not been sacrificed in any way.    Year-round ...
