The American Museum of Radio and Electricity, located at 1312 Bay Street in downtown Bellingham is a nique museum that houses a  collection of nationally recognized vintage radios and other electronic devices. All of the ancestors of the cell phone, high-speed internet and cable television. The museum is dedicated to the history of the scientific exploration of electricity,  and the the preservation of antique radios, the golden age of radio, and the dawning of the wireless age. It began in 1985 as "The Bellingham Antique Radio Museum" with Jonathan Winter as it's founder. There are a number of magnificent trails in and around Bellingham, Washington.  They are all a part of the city's Greenways program.  Here is a list of five that Bellinghamsters use regularly.1.  Interurban Trail - This trail, for much of its distance, follows the old interurban rail line road bed that connected communities in Whatcom County to communities in Skagit County.  The trail starts on the Old Fairhaven Parkway, makes its way through some residential areas, old forest, Arroyo Park, open areas and ends up at Larrabee State Park.  It is seven miles one way and is well worth the effort.2.  Lake Padden Park Trails.  2.6 mile loop around the lake.  This is a popular walking and jogging trail.  It goes through heavily forested areas except for those areas on the East and Southeast la...

The Whatcom Museum of History & Art is one of the most interesting and unusual buildings in Bellingham. The red brick Victorian building is trimmed with Chuckanut sandstone. It houses some permanent exhibits of cultural and natural artifacts that trace Bellingham's early history as well as a vast collection of images of local historical value. Temporary exhibits vary widely from things of local significance and artists to international shows like the recent Rodin Exhibit.  The beautiful old building that is home to the museum was built in 1892 as the City Hall. By 1939, a new city hall was built and the  old building was declared outdated and scheduled to be demolished when some local preservationists had the foresight to put up a fight to keep the old beauty around for future generatio...

BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON!  According to Bert Sperling in an article posted in the New York Times.   The number 3 spot went to Portland, Oregon, and the coveted number 1 spot went to: Gainesville, Florida. Anyone remember what happened to the town of Dante's Peak right after it was ranked number 2?  :)

Being young and in real estate brings with it its challenges.  Establishing your validity right out of the starting becomes routine as it virtually always expected.  I am often asked, "How old are you?" from skeptical prospective clients, and that's my cue to convince them that I may be young, but I'm not stupid.  Of course, I don't try to convince people of my competency by spouting off my resume, but by telling them what they want to know about real estate.  Staying continually informed on things like market stats has become invaluable, because people don't argue with numbers.  Dressing professionally has also become a necessity.  Even on "casual Friday" because you never know who you're going to be meeting.  And when you're young, there often really isn't such thing as a second impre...

The Sehome neighborhood is located northeast of Western Washington University, and the Arboretum on Sehome Hill which tops out at 650 feet above Bellingham Bay. It is one of Bellingham's older neighborhoods and it's history adds alot to Bellingham, it is once a town on its own and one of the 4 towns that combined to become Bellingham. Sehome became New Whatcom and joined Whatcom and later Fairhaven and Bellingham to be the city we know today .The Sehome Hill Arboretum is 165-acres of open space that is owned and managed jointly by Western Washington University and the City of Bellingham and includes walking trails and dramatic views of Bellingham Bay. I have fond memories of walking that trial to WWU when I lived on Key Street many years ago.The neighborhood has homes that have views of...

This outdoor art blog, the third in a series, features art found in Downtown Bellingham, Washington.  The sculptures on the back lawn of the Bellingham Public Library, are part of a revolving display.  Pieces are kept for a period of time, then replaced by others.  Some of the downtown Bellingham pieces have been in place for some time.I hope these pieces are enjoyed by all who look.  There will be one more part in this series.  Hopefully I'll have that one up later this week. Thanks for lookingDavid Helmwww.helmhomeinspections.com

One of the parks that is in Bellingham, and would probably not immediately come to mind, is Memorial Park. It is in the Sunnyland neighborhood, right behind Sunnyland Elementary School (where I went to school for one week in the 1950's before they redistricted me elsewhere.) This park is at King streets and East Maryland. It is a very pretty park, the only negative I was aware of was the freeway noise, as it borders on the freeway at the east side. This park goes back to WWI, when it was put in to commemorate the local war dead from "The Great War." Since that time, they have added memorials for all US wars. I had a rather odd experience. While looking at the WWII memorial, I remembered clear back to my childhood. There was a lady in the neighborhood, who's son had perished during a bom...

Bellingham Airport The Bellingham International Airport provides the region with commercial, general aviation, and corporate air transportation needs. The Bellingham airport is located 90 miles north of Seattle which allows for a quick commuter trip to the Seattle-Tacoma International airport in a mere 39 minutes. The airport is situated on the north side of the city and is 30 minutes south of the U.S.-Canadian border, 40 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia. But the Bellingham airport is not just any ordinary airport. Many travelers praise Bellingham's airport for a professional but laidback atmosphere. Travelers feel refreshed to step onto solid ground and breathe a sigh of relief when welcomed into Bellingham. It is a great change from the usual pandemonium of a larger airport...
