There was a little cloudiness, a little dampness, but, more importantly, there were lots of people enoying all the fun activities at the 2nd Annual Occoquan River Festival on Saturday May 2, 2009. It is no wonder since it was preceded by broad media coverage. A joint effort of the Occoquan River Communities the event celebrates the lure of the Occoquan as well as its' commercial and ecological mportance to the area bordering the river and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. There were water taxis and shuttle buses carrying people to and from Occoquan, Occoquan Regional Park, Lorton Workhouse, Belmont Bay, Rivergate and Prince William Marina.     The Occoquan River Communities plans for the River Festival have been finalized.  As you can easily see the flyer below outlines the many activities that will be taking place in the various venues that call the Occoquan River home.  As a member of ORC and a member of the Board of Directors I can personally attest to the effort put forth by  John Houser, Manager of Occoquan Regional Park.  This festival will have a wide variety of events to please every age and interest. The Historic Town of Occoquan is sponsoring three events as a kick off to their on-going "going green" campaign.  The first event is the opening of the Occoquan Farmers Market on Mill Street running between 8 -12.   Please remember to bring your canvas bags to take home all of your fresh produce and baked goods.  The farmers market will run all summer except for the summer craft's fair weekend in June.At the same time the town is also sponsoring a Recycling Day.  There will be a free shredding truck in town and you can bring up to 3 bags or boxes of old papers that need to be shredded...for free.  At the same time there will be collection points for eyeglass recycling by the Lions Club and a Cell Phone Recycling Center to collect working cell phones.The third event is the spring Riversh... 04/16/2009

That is the good news for my friends and family The even better news is that we only have to go a few miles away from our home in Belmont Bay to the historic town of Occoquan to find Mom's Apple Pie Company and General Store. All of the pies at Mom's are made fresh with local ingredients. You can actually find someone peeling apples in the kitchen and you have your choice of the traditional two crust apple pie or the brown sugar crumb topping.
