The Hollin Hall Shopping Center located on Fort Hunt Road has survived handsomely since it was built in conjunction with Hollin Hall Village in the late 1940's and early 1950's.   The facade of the Safeway at the north end of the complex is typical of the architectural design of that period.  Although the Fort Hunt area of Mount Vernon is not an incorporated town, the Hollin Hall Shopping Center is about as close to a "downtown" as you can get.  It is two blocks long and has all of the neighborhood necessities - most of them have been there for years.      Over the years there have been several different pharmacies in tnis section of the center, but Rite Aid appears to be well established, albeit dated.         The Village Wharf, originally under the same ownership as The Wharf in O...

The first of 700 homes in Waynewood were delivered in the early 60's.  They were extremely well crafted by Gosnell Builders.  A very attractive feature is that many of the split level homes have a fourth upper level which is a walk-in standup attic.  Of course, many of them have now been finished into additional living space. Waynewood Elementary is located within the subdivision.  Although it was a futuristic concept in the beginning it is still highly valued and was a prototype for similar schools in later subdivisions. The Waynewood Swim Club is also an integral part of the social fabric of the community. Bordering the George Washington Parkway has contributed to the continued popularity of the community.  There is an 11 mile long jogging/bike path from the Mount Vernon Estate ...

If you've never seen an 18th century grist mill in operation,  the reconstructed George Washington Grist Mill is a fascinating place.Washington's first ownership of a grist mill occurred when he inherited Mount Vernon from the widow of his half-brother, Lawrence. Its' primary purpose was to provide wheat and corm meal for area farmers and the Mount Vernon Estate. In 1771, Washington had a new "merchant mill" built and began commercial milling operations selling flour and corn meal up and down the East Coast and as far away as Portugal.  The mill was razed in 1850 and was bebuilt by the Commonwealth in 1933 - this is the mill you can visit today.  Washington operated a distillery at the site which has been excavated, rebuilt and is open to the public.  The mill is located on Mount Verno...

There was no place in colonial America as grand as Woodlawn.  The Lewises of Woodlawn entertained lavishly. Before his death in 1799, George Washington deeded 2,000 acres of the Mount Vernon estate to Major Lawrence and Eleanor "Nelly" Custis Lewis. Lawrence was the President's nephew and "Nelly" was Martha Washington's grandaughter.Dr. William Thornton, first architect of the U.S. Capitiol designed the mansion where the family displayed a collection of objects in honor of their illustrious ancestors.  Woodlawn is open for tours and is an extremely popular site for private events.  It is convenient to Washington's Grist Mill and Mount Vernon Estate.      CONTACT ME for assistance with Mount Vernon and Fairfax County Real Estate.

In 1974 we relocated to Virginia from Massachusettes.  After a very thorough tour of Fairfax County we decided Mount Vernon was the place that suited our needs. My husband's office was in Crystal City and the trip in on the George Washington Parkway was a pleasure.  Additionally, it was convenient to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when he had to travel. We were within walking distance of the Mount Vernon Estate.  As we walked along Old Mount Vernon Road we passed a gate that provided an unobstructed view of the mansion identical to the one in this article.  It was also a short bicycle ride to the Parkway and a relaxing trip along the river into Olde Towne.  It was easy to visualize George Washington making the same trip on horsebackThere have been some changes since we moved o...

There was a time when you were comfortable in a hardware store since you felt like a neighbor and you probably were.  Small town hardware srores, similar to the local drug store with soda fountain, have all but disappeared from the American landscape.  Those days are not gone completely in Mount Vernon - Village Hardware in the Hollin Hall Center on Fort Hunt Road is thriving.  It believes in personal service and neighbors helping neighbors.Larry Gray opened Village Hardware in 1979 and still believes in the business practices that made his store a success - 7-day-weeks of hard work have paid off for Larry and his family.People will drive miles out of their way to shop at Village Hardware since they know they will get the best possible product at the best possible price.  Some people ...

It is one thing to sell to Americans who are out of the country such as my blog about John and Kay who were in Hawaii and purchased their home through me over the internet without  ever having seen the home before they arrived for settlement. It is quite another thing to sell to foreign diplomats who have never been here before.  My buyers were stationed in Sudan, were assigned to Washington, DC. and were totally unfamiliar with our real estate procedures. They visited my website and solicited my help in finding them a home prior to their arrival.  Thus began a cycle of phone calls, lender contacts, e-mailed listings and documents sent as attachments to e-mail including the purchase offer.  Similar to John and Kay they would sign the documents and fax them to my e-fax which arrived perf...
