Ever buy a pair of jeans on line only to find that when they arrived they did not fit properly.  It is not easy to shop on line.  Nor is it easy to shop on line for a new home.  I understand lots of folks are searching for information and getting a wealth of an education about home selling and purchasing on line.  I think this is great but this does not replace the actually experience of going out and looking a properties or knowing the neighborhoods and the local market. I work with a lot of relocation out of state for some of the Central Virginia companies like Tyco and Norfolk Southern Railroad.  So many times folks will see a house on line and once we get to the property it just was not what they expected.  Kinda like, once you put those jeans on that you bought on line.  :-) (They ...

I'm not just a Realtor®, I'm a real person with a hectic life, kids and many other interests besides real estate. I absolutely love the area of the country in which I choose to live and want to promote it as an affordable and wonderful place to raise a family. When I have the chance to blog I write about my life, my interests and my family too. Now I know that some may feel the private side of real estate agents lives are best left for facebook, but I'm just too transparent to keep my lives separate.  Since I've been posting on Activerain, and focusing on Localism especially, I've received countless calls from people who've found me online. In fact, I've had several calls from people wanting information on festivals, schedules, how to contact a POA, thinking I work with the business I'v...

Since we're trying to furnish our lake house on a budget, I'm all about saving money. I love bargain hunting, especially yard-sailing on the weekend. The rest of the week, I'll pop into our local Goodwill Stores when I'm in the area. I've found some great nautical lamps and a brand new comforter set in the last few weeks. There are five stores that I frequent; one in Lynchburg, Forest, Madison Heights, Bedford at Smith Mountain Lake. You just never know what you'll find and today I came upon a happy surprise. I walked in to the Forest store and look what I found- for a whole lot less than craigslist!   Check out your local Goodwill Stores, you'll find merchandise for less and will be supporting a great cause. From the Goodwill website:  Goodwill Industries is all about people working.We...

I've profiled some of the local businessmen in the Lynchburg area and wanted to introduce you to my favorite businesswoman! My daughter Megan  is 19, a  college Freshman, an avid reader who loves latin dance- especially salsa. She is a hard worker, holding down a job at The Mezzanine Cafe, babysitting and she is a Mary Kay consultant. She is growing her business quickly while saving money for college.  This month Megan is in a contest to facial 30 ladies in 30 days! She loves to pamper women and needs models so she can practice. Her facials are fun, free, take less than an hour, and you can earn free product just by being a model. If you are new to Lynchburg or Forest or just searching for a local Mary Kay consultant, call Megan Malone for your complimentary makeover at 434-229-6463 o...

Well, the last few weeks have been a blur between work, going away for my anniversary, preparing to move my oldest daughter out of her apartment and preparing for my youngest daughter's high school graduation. I am exhausted! We've homeschooled Megan for 10 of twelve years and one of the highlights she was looking forward to was the graduation ceremony complete with cap and gown. However, we live in Virginia and the ceremony was taking place in Pensacola, Florida. After returning from our trip on Monday, we realized there was no way we could drive the 14+ hours to Pensacola on Thursday to arrive for activities on Friday afternoon just to turn around and drive back Saturday afternoon to meet with clients on Sunday! Late Wednesday night I checked all the airlines and the discount websites...

What a great turnout for the debut of Salsa Nights at the Dance Theatre of Lynchburg! After a successful demonstration of Salsa dancing at Liberty University's Multicultural Awards Banquet at the Holiday Inn Select, the doors opened at 9pm for lessons in Salsa dancing at the Dance Theatre. This is a beautifully restored building on Commerce Street and I can't think of a better location, right next to The Mezzanine Cafe. It's refreshing to see these downtown businesses packed on a Friday night. Salsa is a part of the cultural heritage of many countries and I think it's a wonderful skill that is being taught thanks to the leadership of Eddie Reyes. If I was ever going to feel comfortable with my daughter being out late on a weekend, it's on a Friday night. These gentlemen even walk her to...

Two weeks ago, really ten days ago, I put out the humming bird feeder.  The first week of April is when the "scouts" are out.  I've never been successful with a hummingbird feeder, but I've never really tried either.  I just put in a 1/2 effort and put it out too late probably for the scouts to get wind of it and by then they had found their favorite places to feed.  Hummingbirds are territorial so they won't usually venture out of their territory. This morning when I saw a hummingbird feeding at the hummingbird feeder I got excited.  It was cool to watch him.  I found success!  I did what I was suppose to do when I was suppose to do it based on what the experts told me and a "scout" found my feeder.Of course I told my husband and he said, "Isn't that what is suppose to happen?"  Yes, de...

“Boy, its really a Buyer’s Market, isn’t it?”  I’ve been hearing this more and more often, and the truth is, it IS a Buyer’s Market.  But if you’re a buyer – or more importantly, a seller – what does that mean for you?Well first, let’s look at a few stats.  In previous articles, we’ve discussed the concept of ‘market saturation’ – a figure determined by taking the number of homes currently on the market and dividing by the number of homes that have sold within the past 30 days.  For example: if, on a given day, there are 500 homes listed in Lynchburg, and within the past 30 days 100 have closed, that would give us a 5 month supply.  If we stopped listing homes on that day, in theory, it would take us 5 months to be ‘sold out’ of our inventory. We measure how balanced any market is by how...

There are several colleges and a university in the Lynchburg, Virginia area. Lynchburg College is a private, liberal arts college, founded in 1903 by Dr. Josephus Hopwood.
