The Hampton Carousel is a great way to spend time with the family and beat the heat while enjoying downtown Hampton Virginia. In 1920 the Philadelphia Tobaggon Company handcrafted the Buckroe Beach Carousel.  My mother used to come from Richmond to Buckroe Beach to ride the carousel (along with the other rides at the Buckroe Beach Amusement Park) when she was a little girl.  The Buckroe Beach Amusement Park is no more, however the carousel was refurbished and moved to downtown Hampton waterfront area in 1991.  The 48 horses are hand crafted and the original oil paintings and mirrors are still intact.  It is one of 200 antique carousels left in the United States.  It is enclosed in an air conditioned pavilion and is a great way to take in a little local history and  beat the heat while e...

Phoebus, Virginia Heron While on a photography excursion to the quaint waterfront section of Hampton, known as Phoebus, I came across and shot a Heron I haven't seen in this area as often as I see the abundant Blue Herons and Great Egrets. The Heron I shot was a Yellow-crowned night heron, below is a juvenile bird: I also shot this adult bird across Mill Creek in a tree: One of the great things about living in the Hampton Roads area is the abundant wildlife and beautiful scenery.   Elizabeth Lake Estates is a community of 320 homes in the Fox Hill area of Hampton, Virginia. It is located on the North end of the Hampton River between Fox Hill and Woodland Roads. The community has developed and grown over a 21 year span beginning in 1962 and ending with the completion of the last home in 1983. It has the distinction of being the first neighborhood to form a civic association in Virginia. The neighborhood is very family friendly and features many open areas and two pools, a 25 meter pool and a  diving pool, for members. Many events are held in the neighborhood throughout the year including an Easter egg hunt by the lake and a 4th of July parade through the neighborhood. Many of the homes in the community are waterfront and many have water views of the Hampton River...

Not really, I spent the day at the Hampton, VA BMX track with my kids and had more fun than I've had all year.  These guys are so inspirational, they make me want to go out get a bike and start racing!  I think I'll probably just put all that energy into 09 and make enough to open a track.  As long as there happy I'm ecstatic!  Here is a picture of them on there bikes, the picture is a link to there first time around the track too.                         Phoebus   The community of Phoebus is a historic waterfront neighborhood in Hampton that is currently undergoing a revitalization effort in its historic district. Tax credits are being offered to promote business investment and restore historic buildings to their former glory. Due largely to these efforts Phoebus is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmark Register. It sits across Mill Creek from Fort Monroe and its easy accessibility to the   Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads Harbor make it a prime location for fishing and boating. Phoebus still retains that small town atmosphere that is largely being lost in our ever growing region and is well worth a visit.                  The Chesapeake Bay Brown Pelican, once almost ex...

Wythe is one the oldest, most historic neighborhoods of Hampton, Va., named after George Wythe, one of the original signers of the United States Declaration of Independence. The hundreds of homes that reside in this landmark boast of pride and beauty. Pride really does say it all when driving through the area or stopping to speak with one of the residents. Members of the neighborhood's home owners association take their roles serious in maintaining the integrity of this section of Hampton. My travels through Wythe led me to some of the friendliest people in the city. There was always someone either giving a welcoming wave or eager to offer their assistance when I had a particular question. It is not unusual to find people jogging, riding their bikes, or even having an occassional block ...

This image is of the Pocahontas window given in 1887, in part, by Native American students from Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, now Hampton University, who participated in the life of the parish of St. john's. St. John's Church is the oldest English-speaking parish in America, founded in 1610.  The church of St. John's is a 1728 worship building displaying beautiful colonial brickwork. There have been three parish sites before this current site dating to 1728. This image was created using Photomatix Pro 3 from 5 exposures +/- 2 stops in 1 stop increments.

Hampton's premier park is a 456 acre environmental education and wildlife management facility. Born from borrow pits and garbage dumps, the park is truly a success story of reclamation of our natural resources. From the 10,000 square foot nature center overlooking Sandy Bottom Lake to the elusive creatures that inhabit the wetland marshes, there is something for everyone at the Sandy Bottom Nature Park.   Below are just a few examples of a recent trip to Sandy Bottom:

Last weekend, August 8-10 2008, was the 82nd annual Hampton Cup Regatta on Mill Creek at historic Fort Monroe, Phoebus Va. The weekend features a car show, plenty of speed, vendors and a "Bash on the Bridge" overlooking Mill creek and the races. There were several classes of watercraft competing and is a fun filled family weekend.
