I love Fall in Virginia: the crisp air, the leaves changing colors, apple picking and all of those Festivals. I received a call this afternoon from a gentleman who read a blog I wrote last year on the Appomattox Railroad Festival. He's planning to come to this year's events and asked about the local accomodations. The 36th Historic Appomattox Railroad Festival will be held on Main Street, downtown Appomattox. This has become one of the largest festivals in Virginia drawing over 30,000 people in 2006 and shouldn't be missed. This year the festival takes place the weekend of October 11-12, 2008. Appomattox is located approximately 30 minutes from Lynchburg. Norfolk & Southern Railroad donated the Appomattox Depot to the Town of Appomattox. This street will be packed with people enjoying t...

Today marks the 143rd anniversary of Lee and Grant signing documents that ended the Civil War in the sleepy little Southern town of Appomattox in the McLean House nestled in the village.  Sorry I didn't include a photo (been too busy trying to keep clients happy).  Now, why would I blog about this?  Well, I am from Appomattox and guess where my first job was -- I was a tour guide at the McLEAN HOUSE!!!  (That probably started my fascination with homes and explains why I love this crazy business we're in).  That's right, I had an aunt who worked as one of the administrators there, they needed another seasonal tour guide, and she thought I would be perfect.  And I loved it!  I was amazed at how many people would come from all over the world and sign our little registers just to experience...

Following the fall of Petersburg and Richmond in early April 1865, Robert E. Lee led his exhausted Army of Northern Virginia on a fighting retreat west.  The goal was to link up with Gen. Joseph Johnston and his Army of Tennessee near Danville, but Ulysses S. Grant's forces harried the Rebels at every step.  On April 6, the Battle of Sailor's Creek cost Lee 7,000 Confederate men, one-fifth of the remaining ranks, including Lee's son Custis and seven other generals who were captured.  The next day, Lee refused Grant's request for a discussion of surrender, saying he would rather "die a thousand deaths."  But after Lee's supplies were captured at Appomattox Station on the evening of April 8, Lee was compelled to meet with the Union leader. On Sunday morning, April 9, the two generals met i...

That's what happened to Wilmer McLean in the summer of 1861.  Two huge armies were clashing on his farm near Manassas, and it seemed like the fighting might go on for a long time.  Declaring he hoped "never to see another soldier," McLean took his family south and west to where he thought the war would never reach - to the dusty burg of Appomattox Court House, where on April 9, 1865 Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in McLean's living-room, ending the Civil War.  As Wilmer later said, "The war began in my front yard and ended in my front parlor."

Of all the areas surrounding the independent city of Lynchburg, Appomattox County may have the most drawing power for Civil War Buffs.  It has a heritage that no one else can claim.  Emblazoned proudly on signs at the county line are the words Appomattox - Where Our Nation Reunited. The signs invite a nation of tourists to unite again, revisiting the events of 1865, when Gen. Robert E. Lee handed his sword to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the  McLean House. In a way, Wilmer McLean has become a metaphor for Appomattox County's initial attitude toward its place in history.  McLean was living near Manassas, Virginia when the First Battle of Bull Run broke out within a few miles of his front porch.  Badly shaken he moved his family southeast to Appomattox, a place he felt the war would never reach...

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park - Our Nation Was Reunited 142 Years Ago I love living in Central Virginia. Besides the beauty that surrounds us, there is so much history here. Consider a drive to Appomattox during the week of April 6-15.  It was here on April 9, 1895 that our nation was reunited after the Civil War. The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park will be celebrating the 142nd anniversary of the surrender.  There is a schedule of events posted at www.nps.gov/apco. I highly recommend this National Park, a favorite of local schools for field trips. Learn about the historic surrender that took place here. Several Civil War re-enactments take place during the year. For more information call (434)352-2621.While in Appomattox, you might want to explore down...
