The USS Lexington is a World War II era aircraft carrier and is located in Corpus Christi Bay just across the ship channel from downtown Corpus Christi. The USS Lexington was commissioned in 1943 and served the United States longer than any other aircraft carrier in our history. Her planes were responsible for destroying 847 enemy aircraft and the ship's guns shot down fifteen planes and assisted in bringing down an additional five planes. The USS Lexington was given the nickname "The Blue Ghost" since the Japanese reported her sunk four times. She was the oldest working carrier when decommissioned in 1991 and Corpus Christi was selected to be her permanent home.
