    In the wake of the torrential rains that flooded Central Texas on October 31, Samaritan’s Purse is responding to help locals who have been devastated by the disaster. Samaritan’s Purse sent staff and equipment to serve the Onion Creek community, located in the southeast part of Austin. Onion Creek reached a record high water level at 41 feet, severely impacting surrounding areas. A Disaster Relief Unit is based at Texas Oaks Baptist Church. Assessors are in the area identifying people most in need of help, and volunteers have already finished working on the first home, which belonged to a police officer who had just underwent surgery before the flood. Yesterday, a strange thing happened in Austin, TX. After being in an ongoing drought that has been in progress for the greater part of the last five years, Austin was hit with a deluge of rain, which will be forever known as the “Halloween Floods”. Some parts of town received more than 12” of rain! This quickly overran neighborhood creeks and rivers and caused severe flooding in several flood-prone areas of town. In the part of town that I live in near Onion Creek, broke an all time record yesterday and crested at 42’ high. To appreciate what Onion Creek which is normally a peaceful creek within a scenic greenbelt looks like at 42’, you have to see these pictures below.   This caused widespread flooding along the creek and caused swallowed up almost 1100 homes.
