Having attended the NAR mid year meetings in Washington DC this week, I thought it was important to share that Realtors do much more than assist in the buying and selling of real estate. I belong to three orgainzations 1-Greater Chattanooga Association of Realtors,2- Tennessee Assocation of Realtors and 3- National Association of Realtors, all three of which are involved in lobbying our elected officials in relation to personal property rights and issues that afftect the housing market.  For example, we visited Capital Hill this week to talk about preserving the Mortgage Interest Tax deduction for home owners as well as maintaining existing limits on loans so that there are more available mortgages and to protect the FHA program's current downpayment % at 3.5%.   Why is something like t...

The Greater Chattanooga Association of Realtors today released the sales results for December 2010 for residential real estate in it's service area.  In summary, home sales declined by 8.5% when compared to the same month in 2009.  This decline represented another month of declining home sales, which has been the case in  our market since July of 2010.  The market sales were stimulated by the Federal First Time buyer Credit in the spring of the year and my calculations indicate that we have finished the year with approximately a 3% increase for the total year in comparison to 2009.     The Median home price for December increased by 6.6% when compared to the same period a year ago, which is good news for the market.  Again, my calculations indicate that the total year will show a price...

Now that it isn't like Dante's inferno quite so hot anymore, it's fall planting time. I for one, really like The Barn Nursery's tag line: Go play in the yard! It's hard to miss 'The Barn' if you live in Chattanooga. Just in case you've never noticed, it's that big old mess o' plants just off I-24 at the 4th Ave exit. Makes for a nice view from the interstate if you're stuck in traffic going up the Ridge Cut. Anyhoo...I mosey'd on over there a couple of days ago and picked up some pansies to go in my window boxes and some other stuff to replace the container plants that I gave up on the heat killed a few weeks ago. That big ol' sea of flowers was just too pretty so I took a couple of shots. Enjoy the pictures, then make it a point to enjoy this gorgeous weather and go play in the yard!

This week's headliner is a little duo made up of Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnnie Irion. Guthrie is the daughter of Arlo Guthrie (and therefore the granddaughter of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie). As usual Guthrie & Irion will take the stage near the corner of Georgia & MLK at 8pm.  Amber Fults opens at 7pm. Does the guy who has a pet python still bring it to Nightfall?

This week's headliner is the Carolina Chocolate Drops. I heard a pretty extensive interview with them on NPR a couple of months ago so I was pretty jazzed to see their name come up as this week's act. The music that's mostly strongly identified with Appalachia seems to be the preserve of white folks (Deliverance anyone?) even thought it's actually not, so it's nice to hear an African American interpretation. Click for more information about the performance this week at Nighfall. Or learn more about the Carolina Chocolate Drops themselves. They'll be taking the stage at 8pm.

Glendon Place is one of those Chattanooga neighborhoods that you drive by all the time (it's just off Germantown so if you live points east & work downtown there's a good chance you pass it every day) but might not notice. Don't get me wrong, it's perfectly charming whizzing by at 45 but you don't really appreciate it unless you make the turn and take a little Sunday drive through its winding streets. Brainerd gets a bad rap sometimes as a not-so-happening place to live but it really has a lot to offer. Leafy streets plus good proximity to I-24 and downtown as well as newer shopping areas like Hamilton Place. What's not to love? Especially when you've got A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E houses like these. Make no mistake, some of these are older homes that probably need some updating and sweat equity, ...

Festive St. Elmo, a non-profit organization, is teaming up with the Historic St. Elmo neighborhood association to bring in some fresh blood a new public art installation at the junction of Tennessee & St. Elmo Avenues. The Lyndhurst Foundation is providing grants through Art in the Neighborhoods to encourage and support local communities in creating public art projects. Lyndhurst & Art in the Neighborhood are donating up to $14,000 while the remaining $7,500 needed is being raised within the St. Elmo community. Chattanooga is already known as a destination for art and artists, and these neighborhood art projects will only enhance that reputation. Whether you like the big blue rhino or not.

The ever popular (it's free!) Nightfall series continues this week with headliner Warren Hood. One of the things I like a lot about Nightfall is the variation in the acts they book. This guy plays the violin, fiddle & mandolin so I'm looking forward to hearing him. I'm also looking forward to the change in weather. It's been too hot lately to really enjoy Nightfall but this weekend promises to be a little better in that regard. Third Lobby opens at 7 and Warren is scheduled to take the stage at 8pm. So bring the dog & a lawn chair and join me on MLK for a downtown Chattanooga tradition!   Warren Hood is an accomplished musician who plays violin, fiddle, mandolin, and composes and sings as well. He lives in Austin, Texas and performs with his local band, Warren Hood and the Hoodlums, in ...
