Highland Park (Chattanooga, TN)
Highland Park in Chattanooga, TN is a nationally recognized community known for its history, its beautiful homes, its friendly front porch culture, and its inspiring growth and development.   While the hyperlocal market in Highland Park suffered during the recession, just like all other neighborhoods in Chattanooga did, Highland Park has rebounded and average home sale prices are 10% greater than they were before the recession (see our article about it). Of all the neighborhoods I’ve researched in Chattanooga, this is the only neighborhood where that is true. Here are the top 5 most expensive homes in Highland Park, Chattanooga   $600,000 109 Morningside Drive Chattanooga, TN 37404   $350,000 1406 Chamberlain Avenue Chattanooga, TN 37404 (includes adjoining lot)   $299,000 124 Morningsi...

When it comes to real estate, one of Chattanooga’s greatest treasures are the historic homes for sale in Highland Park. They have even been celebrated on a national stage -- in 2001 Highland Park was awarded "Neighborhood of the Year" by Neighborhoods, USA. They’ve been written about in magazines like Southern Living and featured on HGTV. That’s pretty amazing when you consider that Highland Park is made up of only about 900 homes.     But, Highland Park is more than just  a collection of beautiful turn-of-the-century houses. It’s imbued with a friendly front-porch culture, has unrivaled convenience to thriving downtown, and is flourishing, even as other neighborhoods are still sluggishly recovering from the recession.   From 2009 to 2011, the average price of homes for sale in Highland...

Now that it isn't like Dante's inferno quite so hot anymore, it's fall planting time. I for one, really like The Barn Nursery's tag line: Go play in the yard! It's hard to miss 'The Barn' if you live in Chattanooga. Just in case you've never noticed, it's that big old mess o' plants just off I-24 at the 4th Ave exit. Makes for a nice view from the interstate if you're stuck in traffic going up the Ridge Cut. Anyhoo...I mosey'd on over there a couple of days ago and picked up some pansies to go in my window boxes and some other stuff to replace the container plants that I gave up on the heat killed a few weeks ago. That big ol' sea of flowers was just too pretty so I took a couple of shots. Enjoy the pictures, then make it a point to enjoy this gorgeous weather and go play in the yard!

Ferger place was the first gated community south of the Mason Dixson line. But it wasn't gated to keep intruders out, unless you consider wandering livestock to be 'intruders.' In 1910, Highland Park & Ferger Place were the 'burbs, farmland even, and the Ferger brothers weren't going to stand for any cows on Morningside or Eveningside Drives. There are no worries about cattle roaming the neighborhood anymore and the gates have long since been taken down but the pillars remain, along with the private park for the benefit of the residents. Help the residents of Ferger Place (along with a few descendants of those brothers Ferger) celebrate the historic neighborhood's 100th Anniversary tomorrow from 10am-5pm. Lots of activities and entertainment along with a few street vendors to keep the c...

First things first, I owe the Hamilton County Department of Education an apology. This afternoon, when I got the come-get-your-kid robo-call, I *totally* rolled my eyes. Yeah, right, whatever! was my thought. They were right, I was wrong. So I thought I'd take this opportunity to slip a little flask of vodka in my pocket (for warmth of course!) and take a walk around the neighborhood for some pictures. I live in the Highland Park/Ridgedale area between Missionary Ridge & downtown Chattanooga so seeing some of the quaint old cottages in the snow is a real treat. OK, so that didn't really happen. What DID happen was I took a picture of the house across the street from me from my toasty warm library (yes, I have a room that I call "the library" - when you live in a hundred year old house y...

The gourd looks pretty good too. Nothing like carving a pumpkin with a kid who has no idea why you are doing it Ignore the facial expression, there's no way that you could avoid enjoying something like carving punkins! I think he was just disappointed that it wasn't going to turn into pumpkin bread. His grandmother has spoiled him that way.

The Chattanooga National Cemetery is a beautiful and awe inspiring place. Founded during the Civil War to bury the Union dead who were killed at the Battle for Chattanooga, it is the largest national cemetery in Tennessee. Located on the edge of the Highland Park neighborhood at the corner of Bailey & Holtzclaw Avenues, this is a wonderful place to come to reflect on our nation's history, particularly in the quiet of sunrise, when this photo was taken. Click here for more information about the cemetery and its history.
