Mid Appalachian Quilters RetreatThis is one of the most fun retreats I go on every year.  There are guest speakers, show and tell from past years, block lotteries, and of course classes.  Couples are also welcome but both need to register for classes, but I'm sure there are even classes that he would enjoy like the dying class!!There is still lots of time to register for classes, you can learn to dye fabric, learn a new technique, there are hand and machine projects or just take a studio class to help you finish a project that might have you stumped.  MAQ retreat is held at Gettysburg College July 14 - 16, 2023.  You can stay on campus and eat in the cafeteria or if you would rather you can stay in a local hotel and take your meals on campus.  Classes are filling up so register soon!!

The USDA Mortgage Program, also know as a Rural Development Loan, allows home buyers to purchase a property without a down payment requirement.  What surprises home buyers is that this program is also available in many suburbs of larger cities and in towns with sizeable populations such as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  The Gettysburg area is home to close to 10,000 residents and is very rich in history, as it was the site of perhaps the most well known and significant battle of the Civil War in early July of 1863.  According to the USDA Eligibilty Maps, all of Gettysburg is zoned as eligible for the USDA Loan Program.   You May Not Need Money At Closing    Buying a home with the USDA Loan Program often allows home buyers to need no money at all for closing.    Unlike most mortgage programs...

Gettysburg Battlefield ToursLast year around this time I was fortunate to get a Gettysburg Battlefield Tour from a cousin-in-law. We drove around for a while and he described what each area and monument was in place to remember. From the top of Little Round Top you can look over most of the fields of battle and see great distances. The picture below is of a sight that made us all giggle a little. You can actually tour the area on a Segway. Here we were listening to the history of the assault on Little Round Top, and here is this trail of Segways rolling through the area reminding us how different the world was during the battle. The history of war and the United States has a central point of study in the town and surrounding area of Gettysburg. Although my cousins sold their historic home...

Take a Walk w/Gettysburg Gerry-Gen.G.G. Meade  HQ During 3 days in July in the summer of 1863 Gen. George Meade choose the little farmhouse of Lydia Leister to call home. Little did he know it would within those walls that the future of our country would be determined. The Leister farmhouse is a small two room home on the Tanyetown Rd just south of Gettysburg Pa. The choice was a contrast to the HQ's of Gen R.E. Lee on the Chambersburg Rd, west of Gettysburg Pa.    The small home was positioned just inside the curve of the famous fishook formation that the Union Army Of the Potomac chose. The home was abandoned by Lydia and her 6 children shortly before the battle. It is best remembered for it's famous council of war meeting held by Meade and his Generals on the evening of July 2nd. The...

Thank You Once Again Gettysburg   Once again Gettysburg Pa comes through as the place that I know it can be. This past Saturday evening my wife & I saw Gettysburg Pa in action as the outstanding commuinty it truley is. Of course I know that most think Gettysburg National Miltary Park and Civil War when they think about Gettysburg, but I have been lucky enough to get to know the deep down community that is Gettysburg. I have emersed myself these last months in getting to know Gettysburg on a more intimate level, and I have enjoyed every bit of it. A Gem in the Gettysburg Adams County Area Yes that is what we have here in Gettysburg. In a town the size of Gettysburg, in a County the size of Adams, who would think that we would be lucky enough to have such a gem in our community as the Adams County School of Musical Theatre. The theatre opened it's doors in February of 2009 and stayed in operation since offering the kids of Adams County Pa a place to learn, grow and explore the world of musical theartre. The board of directors, staff and kids that are the Adams County School of Musical Theatre deserve praise for the work they have accomplished, taking an old worn out building and bringing it back to life for such a wonderful use. The kids themselves are the real stars, working hard and offering the community a chance to see some de...

Ragged Edge in Gettysburg Pa Has Got the Talent On my constant journey to introduce the rest of America to Gettysburg Pa I have been frequenting some of the local coffee shops, and drinking establishments to highlight what Gettysburg after dark has to offer. While we are relatively small little burg, we do have a pretty cool night life that has some hidden gems.  One of those gems that sparkles brightly in the summer sun is the Ragged Edge Coffee shop in downtown Gettysburg.  It started as a way to highlight the hidden yet accomplished talent the lurks here, but turned into a enlightenment of just how good some these folks really are.  I am now addicted and absolutely love attending these events and helping getting these "kids" out to the public. Take a look for your self, tell me that ...

Theres More to Historic Gettysburg Than the Battlefield This last weekend people from Gettysburg as well as tourists from the outter areas were exposed to a real treat that is sweeping the county. Gettysburg Pa hosted it's 2nd annual Vintage Base Ball Tournament at the Hickory Hollow Horse Farm. This years Vintage Base Ball Tournament saw more teams, more spectators, more fields which all equal more fun. This weekends event hosted nine teams playing on three fields and watched by upwards of 2,500 fans. The rules are a bit different, such as a fly ball caught on one bounce is still considered and out. While strikes and balls are called, they don't mean much. If a "hurler" (pitcher) throws a pitch that is way off base, he will get a warning from the "mediator" (umpire). Likewise if a "str...

Gettysburg is Worthy, Gettysburg is Worthy I actually think this particular challenge is interesting.  What building, place, would be worthy of hosting the 5th anniversary of Active Rain. To start things off with no slight intended to the people of Gettysburg, I think a company such as Activerain might be a bit confusing to Gettysburg Pa. Activerain builds, thrives, and exists on the principal of Internet technology, and while Gettysburg is alot of things, technology forward is not a label one could apply. So lets put Gettysburg where it is most comfortable, in the realm of history. I mean really, when one thinks of Gettysburg Pa besides Gettysburg Gerry the second thing that comes to mind has got to be the Gettysburg Military Park. History abounds here, it is the foundation for our busi...

Home Price - Home Values in Gettysburg Adams County Pa - Calling All Real Estate Investors Earlier this week the Case - Shiller index came out for home values across the United States. Often when Americans ponder Memorial Day, they focus on wars experienced through their own lifetimes - The Gulf Wars, Vietnam, Korean War, World War II, World War I, or the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Since the beginnings of American History, each generation has had its war(s) imprinted on the psyche.  There is one memorable war - the Civil War, which pitted American against American.  Sometimes brother fought against brother. The Battle of Gettysburg often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion" was the bloodiest of the Civil War, at a cost of 51,000 casualties.   The Union victory at Gettysburg ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North in 1863.There were approximately 95,000 Union troops involved.  And approximately 75,000 C...

Gettysburg Battlefield Spangler Springs and A.L Coble RockThis area of the Gettysburg National Military Park was one of the most strategic on the Gettysburg Battlefield. This area on the south slope of Culps Hill was occupied by both Union and Confederate troops during the 3 day Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863. The spring which is this area is named for was used for many years for watering horses and thirsty men for many years prior to the famous battle. The area saw heavy fighting mostly between the Union Twelfth Corps under General Greene, and the 2nd Maryland, Tenth Virginia, and North Carolina regiments. Legend has it that during the fighting truces were set to allow the thirsty soldiers to get water from spring as it's position during the fighting was in "no mans land" between ...
