We took time on Sunday to visit one of the many local wineries in our area. It was a Father's Day treat for me and we were able to bring Jackie along with us as we sat outside. Va La Vineyard is a family owned small farm winery. They specialize in small batch wines made from northern Italian and French varieties. The farmer is the winemaker and they only use grapes grown in the vineyard on the hill where the vineyard is located.A small amount of bottles are produced each vintage and there are four varieties. We chose to start with a flight of wines, which came with a selection of cheeses and salami. La Prima Donna 2016 is vintage number sixteen and has a large variety of different grape varieties, including malvasia, bianca, petit manseng, pinot grigio, tocai and fiano. This wine is prod...

Nothing beats old Mother Nature at this time of year, but definitely giving her a nudge is Glen Willow Orchards in Avondale, Pennsylvania. Although it takes a few minutes longer to get there than to my regular grocery store, when I need farm grown produce and especially their orange juice, I make a beeline north of my Hockessin, Delaware office to this friendly place.  What a variety of pumpkins and fall decor I found. There was a whole menagerie of animals some crafty person had fashioned out of straw, all looking out towards the fields of veggies.      Also loved the moose family and the chickens with the big feet.  I bought a warty pumpkin and golden pepper plant.

Every so often I am reminded of the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." A recent article in Forbes has brought this maxim to mind again.  Last week, the members of the New Garden Twp. (Pennsylvania) Historic Commission met at the 19th C. Lyceum, (photo) once the site of education, lectures, learning, and local elections, to review recent progress on the restoration. We have hired Andrew Gustine of Native Woods Restoration  to work on the Lyceum restoration.Andrew has begun work by removing and restoring the historic wood windows and restoring them, (photo)  one by one.  A skilled carpenter or woodworker in your area might help you do the same thing.I know from experience that replacement vinyl windows can be a bad idea because they stick, get wedged in place, and are hard to ...

Driving north through Avondale, Pennsylvania on Route 41, the Lancaster Pike, it's not hard to imagine what the town looked like 100 years ago, because many of the buildings still remain. The Allen Block is an active residence today, and is seen in this historic photo taken about the time the Borough of Avondale was created in 1894.  Although part of New Garden and London Gove Townships, the Borough has its own personality, with origins under 2 separate grants from William Penn. New Garden was the western part of a grant to Letitia and William Penn Jr., called the Manor of Stenning. The London Grove portion was given to Penn, Jr. in 1706 as part of a grant from the London Company, a group of prosperous London merchants overseeing these holdings. The Eastern Branch of the White Clay Cree...

Although a Penn grant for the area dates back to 1706, and native inhabitants were here from the Seventh Century, the Borough of Avondale was not chartered until 1894. Many people pass through the town as they are headed from the Port of Wilmington to Lancaster County, but few stop to look at the historic properties as we did the other day. Here are just a few, starting out with an old stone mill built in 1906 on the site of an earlier mill. It is being creatively re-used by the Edlon company for an engineering office (1) and one of the engineers (2) explains about a Teflon product is produced in the building next door as an adhesive for products such as HDF (high density fibreboard). Then we see 2 views of a building dating back to the 18th century, once housing the Bachelor's Club (3...
