Monday was a sad day in Trenton. One of the town's oldest buildings in the downtown core burned to the ground. This was the third big fire in Trenton in less than a month, so the Quinte West Fire fighters have been getting a lot of experience lately. The building that burned down was the Sherwood Forest Inn on Murphy street, and the smoke and flames could be seen from quite a distance. The stores downtown had to be evacuated as did the school a little way down the road. The Sherwood Forest Inn was a bit of a rough spot where all kinds of trouble seemed to take place, but it was also undeniably a big part of Trenton's history. In its better days it was known as the Quinte Hotel and was immortalized in an Al Purdy poem, At the Quinte Hotel. Al Purdy was probably Canada's best known poet o...

Well, today is the day. I can't think of any other event that so poignantly reinforces my belief in the hopelesness of the human condition than an American election. When I was a university student I lived on campus in my first year. To my dismay, the fellow who lived in the room beside mine was a member of Liberal Party of Canada. He was a "young Liberal", and was very active. It seemed odd to me that a teenager would be so involved with politics, surely there are better things to be doing with one's time at that age, like hanging around girls or failing that, going to pubs where one could hope to hang around girls. For the most part, I learned to ignore him. He was an odd character, not particularly bright, but he was very driven. I came to the conclusion that he didn't really believe...

Blogging can be tough work sometimes, especially during those periods when you're not feeling terribly inspired. Thank goodness for Wordless Wednesdays, I should take advantage of them more often, it gives me a chance to write a blog post without actually writing one. Here's some snappy replies to some corporate slogans that I have put together over the last little while. The microsoft "paint" program is a really underused tool these days, easy to learn, and most computers come with it.

This cute two-bedroom rental is perfect for a retired couple, a young couple, a single parent, or a single professional. It is available November 1st, and is right in Trenton, close to all amenities, only 10 minutes to C.F.B. Trenton. Rent is $850 a month plus utilities. The house was completely (and I mean completely) renovated in 2010. It features a new high efficiency furnace, new windows, new drywall, new elecric panel, new kitchen, new bathroom, new floors and some other things that I can't remember right now. It sits on a half-acre lot in town, you don't see that too often. There are grapes, plum and apple trees as well as several fruits and vegetables that are beyond my pomological abilities to identify. It's like the garden of Eden right in Trenton (a scaled down version withou...

I stole this picture from my Facebook Timeline. Someone had posted it and I thought it was too funny not to share it. It made me think about some houses that I have shown to my clients, and how those houses didn't quite meet their expectations. I suppose it's our job as real estate agents to accentuate the positive aspects of our listings, but some are quite good at stretching the truth a little. The poor kids in the bottom photograph are learning a very valuable life lesson and the expression on their faces are pretty similar to the ones I see on my client's faces when we arrive at the "wonderful spacious three bedroom waterfront cottage for $150,000". I always tell my clients that the rule if it looks too good to be true, it probably is will most likely apply, but the little eternal o...

The world can be a strange place sometimes, you only have to stay current with the news to figure that out. This little news story can only be classified in the "what were they thinking???" category. According to NBC news, a man in Holland Township, Michigan managed to start a major fire in the apartment complex where he (and dozens of other people) lived by attempting to burn the fur off of a dead squirrel by using a propane torch. I suppose the poor fellow was a little hungry. I'm not the kind of guy who usually starts one of those America vs. Canada debates, but sometimes I have to wonder what exactly is going on down there. Perhaps it's something in the water, but you would NEVER read about something like this happening north of the border. It just wouldn't happen, everybody here kn...

We are angry and we're not going to take it any more. It's time something was done about it. Since the organizers of the Occupy Movements seem to concentrate their efforts on the larger urban centres, it's time people got motivated to start their own Occupy movements in the small towns and rural hinterlands that make up over 99% of this nation's landmass. I look around me and see that nobody else is coming forward in the Quinte area to get the ball rolling, so it's up to me to start the "Occupy Trenton" Movement. There are many complexities when considering starting an important movement like this, and I really hope I'm up to the task. I pondered long and hard about the hows and whys, but I think it's just easier if I start with the wheres. This charming 3 bedroom renovated farmhouse wa...

1) I was waiting for a traffic light to change from red to green earlier today. It's one of those annoying lights that take an unnecessarily long time to change, not really in rythm with the actual flow of traffic. I get caught here quite often, as it's on a route that I take regularly. I have noticed lately that many of the lights in Trenton seem to operate randomly, as if traffic patterns have changed quite a bit since they were last programmed. There are also increasing wait times to cross either of the bridges in town when the roads are busier, partly due to the lights at both ends of both bridges. This is an area where Trenton could use a bit of improvement, as I have heard a few people complaining about the traffic lately. 2) Radio Stations. Despite being a Facebook fan of several...

I am, without a doubt, a dog person, always have been and probably always will be. Dogs have always just had much more of an impact on my life, and I can remember a few dogs that my family had when I was growing up. I can't remember if we ever had a cat. I quite like cats, I don't really have anything against them (other than a vague suspicion that they are plotting something behind my back), but in general I leave them alone and they pretty much leave me alone. Until now. There are a couple of neighbourhood kittens that like to hang around my back yard. I'm sure they are twins, they are difficult to tell apart. They were both very small in the spring when I first noticed them, but they have grown up quite a bit and aren't as "kittenish" as they once were. I believe they both are strays...

If you happen to be heading to Tim Hortons for a coffee or a meal in any one of the seven fine Trenton outlets today, don't forget to buy your smile cookie. They are only $1.00 and will be sold until the 23rd of September. The owners of the local stores will be donating all proceeds to the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation. The funds are badly needed as our local hospital faces many of the same struggles as many other hospitals in smaller to medium sized communities face. Programs like this provide a huge shot in the arm for the hospital, and really do benefit the entire community. As a real estate agent, I am keenly aware that one of the reasons that many people retire in our community is because we have a hospital so close by. I went in and got mine this morning. I usually wouldn't...

Hanna Park is a 42 acre park right in the heart of Trenton that has many uses. The entrance is conveniently located at the corner of Film Street and Cresswell Drive. Smaller kids will enjoy the large play structure and swings, while the younger teenagers will enjoy the basketball court. The older teenagers will appreciate the coverage that the trees provide them so that they can smoke cigarettes without being seen. Two acres of the park is devoted to our canine friends. There is a fenced-in enclosure just for dogs. They can roam around without being on a leash and sniff each others butts to their heart's content. The area is covered in wood chips so that the dogs don't get too muddy. There's even a separate area for the younger pups who just may be starting to learn how to socialize wit...

It's going to be another busy weekend for open houses in the Quinte area. We are quickly running out of summer, but there's still a few nice weekends left. I'm hoping that the weather will be nice and people will want to get out and about. I will be hosting four open houses myself this weekend (that's right, you can just show up and you get to meet me in person - won't that be a thrill?). Saturday, August 25 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 44 Walt Street MLS #2124602. This house, originally built in 1879 and has been entirely updated, sits on a large country lot in Smithfield close to all amenities. With three bedrooms, a large deck and playroom, bright modern kitchen, main floor laundry, this house is move-in ready and waiting for a new family. Saturday August 25 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. 582 Barcovan Beach ...

The Olympics are finally over, and other than a couple of bright spots, it was a fairly mundane Olympics from a Canadian perspective. Canada won its share of medals, but only one gold. One of the medals that Canada lost out on was the 4x100 metre relay team. Initially it looked like they had won a bronze medal (which would have been an amazing feat), but they were disqualified when replays showed that sprinter Jared Connaughton had stepped on the lane line going around the turn of the track. This left the sprint team of Connaughton, Justyn Warner, Gavin Smellie and Oluseyi Smith heartbroken. All that work and preparation gone in a flash. A ten year old boy from Newfoundland, Elijah Porter decided that their performance was worthy of a medal and decided to do something about it, so he wr...

The Murray Canal is a very convenient stretch of water. It is a little over 8 kilometers in length and connects the Bay of Quinte to Lake Ontario, running from Brighton to Carrying Place, just a five minute drive south of Trenton. Boats can get to the Bay of Quinte without using this canal, but it will take a lot longer from the east side because they will have to go all the way around Prince Edward County which juts into Lake Ontario like the middle finger of that guy in the pick up truck who just passed you because he thought you were driving too slow and didn't like your attempts to hinder his pulling out in front. Yeah, something like that. Anyhow, the canal was built in 1882, and like most things around here, originally had a greater commercial value which has now been replaced wit...

Is it just me, or does this seem silly to anyone else? I was shopping for groceries last night when I noticed a product that was stocked in the aisle where I buy my drinks. The name leapt off the shelf and lodged into my brain immediately. Fiji water. Surely it's just the name of the product and not actually water from Fiji, that would be ludicrous wouldn't it? I picked up the bottle, turned it around, and sure enough this product is actually from the Fiji Islands. It says right on the bottle that this water comes from an artesian acquifer in the Yaqara Valley of Viti Levu.  It seems like it's a pretty popular product, there was evidence on the shelf that many cases and individual bottles had been purchased. I live in Ontario, and here are some pretty neat facts about Ontario;   Populat...

I will be having an open house on Sunday June 24th from 1 to 3 p.m. Everybody is welcome to come out and view this beautiful property at 16882 Telephone Road in Murray ward, Quinte West, about 8 minutes west of Trenton and 8 minutes east of Brighton. This immaculate 35 acre property is a great place for you, your family and your horses to live. The house was originally built in 1901 and has been completely restored with new wiring, new roof and trusses, new drywall, insulation, newer furnace, hardwood floors throughout, large rooms and a very large country kitchen.   The 30x60 barn was built in 1870 and has also been restored with every attention to detail possible. It has a tack room, stalls for the horses, two workshops, a large amount of storage space and its own propane heating sys...

Have you ever been sitting in your car stuck in traffic on a hot summer's day, sweat trickling down your forehead, debating whether you should open the window or turn the airconditioning on? Sure you have. Have you ever thought to yourself "there has to be a better way"? Of course you have, we all have thought that. What happened to those flying cars that Popular Mechanics has been promising us since the 1960's? We've seen those cheesy boat/cars come and go without much fanfare, but nobody really wanted those anyway. Everybody has dreamed about soaring above the traffic waving at all the poor chumps stuck on the road, cool air blowing through our faces, avoiding toll booths as we glide towards our destination. Wouldn't that be cool? Martin Jet Pack, a company from New Zealand, has been w...

It would seem that our resident groundhog had a very busy winter. Now she has at least four new rambunctious teenagers to look after. It's possible that there are more, but since I've only ever seen four at the same time, I'm assuming that there are only the four of them.     These little fellows are a little bit shy, but when they think nobody is looking they can get pretty playful with one another. From my observations though, their favourite activity is lounging around eating dandelions. It's a good life.     Despite being somewhat bulky animals  they are surprisingly graceful and quick when they feel that they need to get somewhere else quickly. They seem to be getting quite used to me and when I'm sitting on my bench quietly they get quite close and every day they graze a little bi...
