Canadian generosity for Haiti quake victims overwhelms charities Donations crashing Internet servers  Toronto Star article Louise Brown, files from Canadian Press OTTAWA-Canadians are opening up their hearts and wallets so quickly for disaster-relief efforts in Haiti that some agencies are having a hard time coping with the outpouring of support. "They've actually managed a few times to cause the (Internet) servers at our online donation processing company to (crash) and the call centres have had trouble dealing with the call load," Kieran Green, of Humanitarian Coalition, told the Toronto Star Thursday. The coalition includes Care Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Quebec and Save the Children. "It literally has been overwhelming," Green said, adding that not since the Indian Ocean tsunami o...

Today, World Vision will rush 18 metric tons of life-saving supplies from its warehouse in Denver to the island nation of Haiti, which was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake Tuesday, which has affected some 3 million people.  These supplies and others already pre-positioned by the aid group will help meet the immediate survival needs of those affected by the quake until rebuilding efforts can begin.  "When emergencies like this earthquake happen, it is critical that children and families gain access to basic supplies as quickly as possible," said Dave Toycen, president and CEO, World Vision Canada, who is on the ground in Port au Prince. "We keep supplies like these ready at all times in warehouses around the world, so that we can move immediately when emergencies like this happen anywh...

From the Toronto Star Half a dozen Canadian aid workers from Mississauga-based World Vision Canada are on the ground in Haiti and more are on the way, the charity organization said Thursday. They're the vanguard who'll help more than 800 other World Vision workers based in the Caribbean nation organize relief efforts to thousands of people left homeless by this week's earthquake. The Canadian arm has already raised $1 million and hopes to raise another $4 million within a week. "Canadians always respond very quickly," said Dirk Booy, World Vision Canada vice-president. "The most important thing for us right now is to get cash donations. We have lots of people who want to donate goods, but obviously cash helps us to respond much faster." He said the federal government was sending a tran...

Remember Tom Vu? If you are old enough (and were unmotivated enough) to have watched a lot of late night television in the 1980's you probably remember him quite well. He was the Vietnamese immigrant who would appear on late night infomercials flogging his "get rich quick" scheme. What made him so memorable was that the infomercials were usually shot on a yacht with a fabulous mansion in the background and more importantly (for me anyway) he was surrounded by a bevy of attractive young women in their bikinis. His command of the English language also made him stand out a little. I still remember a couple of his pitches;"Are you man enough to get off your lazy American ass and go to Vu's seminars?"and"Do you think these girls like me? NO, they like my money!" I won't go into the specifics...

Are you going to finish those peanuts? What is an airline to do in a situation like this?  How would they balance the rights of an individual against the rights of the collective in a situation like this? Did the armrest survive intact?

I have come to the conclusion that the person who is in control of the world of captchas is the very same sadistic character who personally wrapped every CD that I have ever purchased. That used to drive me nuts - buying a new CD,  bringing it back to the car trembling with anticipation, only to end up gnawing at it with my teeth like a starving rat in a futile effort to open the darn thing. I'm not positive, but I would bet that quite a few injuries have occured because of this over the years. Perhaps this is why some of my teeth are a little wobbly when I'm munching peanut brittle. Now I'm finding a cyber-equivalent to this phenomena, namely the increasing difficulty of CAPTCHAS. You all know what CAPTCHAS are (although I'd bet a few of you didn't know that they actually had a name - ...
