I blogged about Quinte real estate statistics in March, and apparently the local real estate market has been on a lot of people's minds. I received quite a few emails from people who asked for clarification about the numbers. Some of them were from people who have their properties listed for sale, while others were from people who were merely curious. It's actually the first time one of my statistical posts received any kind of response, so I'm going to the well one more time (at least). Are the residential sales numbers in Quinte down? Well, yes they are, a significant drop from last year indeed. If you remember last year, we had a gorgeous March and a very early spring. Maybe I'm grasping at straws, but the weather does play a significant part in the market (which is why we have a "sp...

It would seem that the weather is finally getting spring-like enough in the Quinte area for enthusiasts to break out their bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles. This is always a bit of a nerve-wracking time as drivers of cars aren't used to the presence of riders yet, and sometimes forget to check twice before changing lanes. The weather can also be a bit of a wild card, as it might be tempting to bring a bike to work only to find that it has snowed during an eight hour shift, and that the ride home won't be much fun. Motorists of both the two and four wheel variety should take a bit of extra care this time of the year, after all, the life you save could very well be mine. I don't think it would be much fun lying in a cold puddle on the side of a road with some broken bones waiting for the ...

There are only a few days remaining until the Zellers store in Trenton closes for good. Everything has to go. Zellers are closing their doors across the country and some lucky communities will get a Target store in its place, but Trenton isn't one of those lucky communities. The store will just close. Naturally there are a lot of rumours about what will happen to the building, but I haven't heard anything that sounds remotely plausible yet. I suspect Trenton will have another empty store for a while. It's too bad because Zellers was a mainstay at the Trenton Town Centre since it took over the Kmart all those years ago.. If you need a desk, filing cabinets, store fixtures, shelving or anything like that, Zellers would be the place to go right now, from floor to ceiling, they are selling ...

If you are in the habit of reading the news, it would be hard not to notice that there is quite a bit of commentary about the real estate market in Canada these days. Articles similar to this Financial Post article seem to be popping up on a daily basis and most of them have a cautiously pessimistic slant to them. The concensus seems to be that the market is stagnant, and while the number of home sales are predicted to decrease, there will be no such drastic decline in the value of homes. Apparently we are due for a "correction" where home values will slide a little (maybe up to 10%), but Canadians can still hang on to our collective smugness about having avoided a U.S. style market crash. It almost goes without saying that the Toronto and Vancouver markets dominate the news, so we mig...

I'm sure that many Canadians have been reading the articles in the media about the state of the Canadian real estate market lately. There seems to be a lot of alarm bells going off. People are worried about the value of what usually amounts to their biggest investment, their homes. Correspondingly there always seems to be a bit of a pushback from the real estate industry, telling folks that there's no cause for alarm and that everything is smooth sailing. I'm not an expert at breaking down the whole Canadian market, but I do know a whole lot about the Quinte real estate market. The Quinte market responds to different stimuli than other markets (all markets are different), and I can say that certain factors have greatly impacted what is happening locally. While it's true that our mark...

Americans should really learn how to ask for help. I had no idea that conditions were so rough south of the border. This insightful North Korean documentary takes a good look at living conditions in the U.S.A. I was especially saddened to learn the fate of the Republican candidate from Oregon, such a sad figure now, lining up for his snow coffee along with everybody else at the snow coffee truck.

To any American reading this, I have a few spare blankets, and we still have lots of snow up here, so come on up, you won't starve. In the meantime, you can thank the Lord for your generous North Korean benefactors.

It looks like Old Man Winter is having one last kick at the can in the Quinte area. Well, I hope it's one last kick. It's not too bad though, it's fairly warm out, hovering around the freezing mark, so it's not blustery. The snow is wet and heavy though, and when the sun goes down it becomes a little treacherous on the roads. I saw at least a dozen cars on the side of the road between Belleville and Brighton last night. Many people simply don't adjust for the winter conditions. This morning the roads were slushy and wet, and when walking, I remembered why it's not a good idea to walk too close to the road. Luckily I wear a very long coat that goes down to my knees, so I was spared being absolutely soaked. The skies are still very grey out, perhaps not 50 shades of it, but at least 4 or ...

I have a tendency to become attached to certain things. It's a bit silly, but I think this phenomenon was explained quite well on the T.V. show Seinfeld, where Jerry had trouble throwing out his favourite ratty old T-shirt which he had named Golden Boy. I become a little attached to my jeans. My jeans go through a life cycle. First they are crisp and new, and I can wear them just about anywhere. I can strut about town in them. They fit well, look good, and I even wear them to work when I'm out on farms or with clients who I'm comfortable with. Then my jeans enter their middle age. They become a little faded and somewhat thin in certain places. I can still wear them when I go out shopping, or places where nobody will take a particular interest in me. This seems to be the longest lasting ...

Unfortunately, it's a bit too cold to be making hay at the moment, but it doesn't mean that one can't get out and about when the sun shines in winter. I took a stroll down to the Bay of Quinte and found a whole bunch of people who love to get out in the winter. These people can sit in little huts on a frozen bay, staring at a little hole they have bored into the ice, and occasionally catch a fish. It's not my cup of tea, but it seems to suit them just fine. This picture doesn't do the whole ice-fishing scene justice, as the huts are difficult to see, but I can assure you that there are at least half a dozen in this picture, they appear to be tiny specks. This enterprising fellow, pictured on the right, is a little more courageous than most. He's fishing in the mouth of the river, where ...

I will admit that I'm not terribly enthusiastic about winter. I don't ski, I'm not a good skater, I don't like being cold, and the grey sky and lack of sunlight can be depressing. I tend not to spend a lot of time outside. Yesterday was very pleasant though, it was sunny, there was no wind, and the temperature was only a couple of degrees below zero. We had a lot of snow on Friday, apparently the biggest snowfall since 2008, so there was a lot of work to be done. First I had to retrieve my car which I had abandoned at work because of all the snow, so that was a two mile walk over unploughed sidewalks and roads. I actually enjoyed the trek, I dressed well, so it was a bit of an adventure. By the time I made it home, my son had already cleared half the driveway, so I relieved him of his d...

Occasionally I must drive to Toronto for a meeting or to attend one event or the other. While I love the little town that I live and work in, it sometimes can be fun seeing the sights and sounds of the city. This particular meeting was taking place in the area near the intersections of Yonge and Wellesley. It's an interesting area, lots of neat stuff to see and do. Since I had parked the car uptown and taken the subway down, I had about an hour to spare. Who knew - public transport saves time.   After glancing at my reflection in a store window it was obvious I needed a haircut. I felt a little shabby walking down the streets in the neighborhood and seeing all the smartly dressed men zipping by me. They seemed all so well groomed. Fortunately there were a lot of haircutting places aroun...

The Trenton Farmer's Market is the kind of place where a fellow like me loves to spend my dollars. The prices are great, the inventory is fantastic and the service is always friendly. It's one of those businesses that has a very loyal customer base, and for good reason. I'm not all that great at preparing meals, but I can still churn out some good ones with the help of my friends at this long-time family owned and operated establishments. The trick is to let them do most of the work. Not only do they have one of those fantastic butcher shops where you can look at the different cuts of meats, they have freezers full of home made pies, vegetables, potatoes, and lots and lots of baked goods as well. Pictured on the left is my haul from last week. Turkey pies, chicken pies, frozen french fr...

Thanks for all the emails. Apparently I have been missed on Active Rain and folks have been wondering what I've been up to. The truth is that I really haven't been up to very much. I have been working much as I regularly do, perhaps even harder than usual, I just seem to have developed an aversion to just about everything having to do with computers. I've become exhausted. Blogging is a lot like going to the gym, it's tough getting back on the wagon once you have fallen off. It doesn't help that the winter can make me feel particularly uncommunicative at times.   It's time to put my big boy pants on again and return to the blogging world. I know that once I get back into the habit it will become easier again. Blogging is like that. I have been poking around on Facebook a bit, but that's...

Here's some good news for all Canadians. The bad new is that our ranking in the visibility of our roadside signage dropped from 7th place all the way down to 12th, and that we are struggling to keep pace with Swiss in our availability of fresh baked goods in urban centres.
