Is it HOT where you are??    It sure is here: Hot and HUMID!   We're living on cold salads these days and I try not to even use the BBQ.  I made this the other night and it was just a fantastic taste treat so I thought I'd share it with you here:  Beef Strip Salad with BBQ Vinaigrette Barbecue Vinaigrette 3 /4 cup of olive oil 1/8 cup dark balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce juice from 1/2 of a lime 1 large clove of garlic crushed 1 tsp of fresh ground cumin seeds (or cumin powder) 1 tsp of chili powder 1 Tbsp of fresh oregano chopped fine 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger 2 - 4 slices of bacon crumbled Whisk all of the above together in a saucepan until blended thoroughly. You were so greatly impressed with my water garden ie regrowing green onions in a dish of water . . .  [sarcasm folks!] I DO BELIEVE I SEE A GREEN TINGE ON MY THUMB! I thought I'd share my success with 2 Romaine Lettuce cores and 1 Iceberg lettuce core growing in a dish of water.  The tallest lettuce is less than 2 weeks old and the other 2 are a week old! Plus my Mustard Seeds 2 weeks old (I love them in a salad or a sandwich)  AND   my Basil (love my basil) both growing in good old fashioned dirt!!! !!  I doubt I'll ever have a proper garden but I'm sure having fun seeing what grows in my kitchen.  If you or someone you know is looking for a home with garden potential in the Kingston and the 1000 Islands area, I have just the place!   Give me a call and together we'll find where you c...

Anyone who has visited Kingston will recognize the bridge below.  It is The LaSalle Causeway which has Lake Ontario to the South and the Catarqui River on the North side and separates Kingston's inner and outer harbours. Construction of the causeway was completed on April 15, 1917. Three bridges are incorporated into the causeway, the center one being a Strauss trunnion bascule lift bridge designed by Joseph Strauss, designer of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. We know it as "The Bumble Bee Bridge" because of the sound it makes when you cross over in a car. The video below refers to it as "The Singing Bridge" and you'll see (and hear) why! July 1st is Canada Day - have a Happy one!!     O Canada! Our home and native land!True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hear...

Good friends, good food, good times . . . July 1st is Canada Day and embodies all of the above! One of best kept secrets of Canada is that our orchards produce some of the most delicious Freestone Peaches in North America . . . This delicious drink is called the Muskoka Maple Splash:   10 fresh mint leaves1 1/2 oz Collingwood Whisky1/2 oz Maple Syrup1/2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice5 fresh peach slicesClub SodaMint and peach slices for garnish Slap the mint leaves in your hand a few times to release the oils. Put the mint and remaining ingredients EXCEPT Club Soda and garnish, into a shaker filled with ice.  Shake well and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice.  Top with Club Soda and garnish.       Enjoy Canada Day by drinking responsibly.  Don't Drink and Drive:  Arrive ALIVE! Many of you are extremely talented and are able to be self sufficient when it comes to produce! Me? Not so much! I have successfully grown cherry tomatoes (until I caught my dog grazing on them) but that is the height of my expertise (and interest) until now. We like Green Onions (or scallions) in our home.  They never seem to stay fresh until I can use them.  Many of my recipes only call for the green part so I have been known to discard the rest, like you see below: Not any more ! I have discovered that they grow again when you keep them in water -  who knew?   I am now on my way to always having a fresh supply of green onions in my kitchen. Look out world, I just might try garlic and avocados next :)

"Synchronicity" is the experience of two or more events that are apparently causally unrelated or unlikely to occur together by chance, yet are experienced as occurring together in a meaningful manner. - from Wikipedia (Another term you may be familiar with is:  The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon ) Yesterday I spent the day up north in Plevna.  A gorgeous day and a gorgeous area!  I was invited up to list for sale Pleasantview Lodge (so aptly named too!) on Brule Lake in the Land of Lakes region in North Frontenac County. Stay tuned for more details on this fantastic property for sale! What I found so interesting is that the first thing I read this morning was this message by the owners of Olivea Restaurant in Kingston;   "Today Stev and I are headed out to Seed to Sausage! "Day of the Pig"...

"POLLUTION" in Kingston can be a good thing, right? Yves Cozin created this sculpture, an arrangement of tubes in Macdonald Park on the shore of our Great Lake Ontario, which was donated by the province of Quebec back in the 70's . . .   (once painted in 1975 as a protest against them to look like Coke and 7-Up cans) There had been a call for a Kingston Sculpture Symposium in honour of the Olympic sailing regatta coming to the city in '76.  We loved playing our own part in that Olympics but sadly, our beautiful waterfront still has this 'artwork' publicly displayed.   Which version do you prefer?  The original or the 'graffiti' version you need to click on above?

KINGSTON, ONTARIO - Kingston is among 21 cities nominated to be named the world's most intelligent communities. The nomination comes from the Intelligent Community Forum, a New York-based think-tank that studies the economic and social development of the 21st century.  Kingston made the top 21 largely through its development of a fibre-optic communications network and a commitment to sustainability and green energy initiatives. For this year's version of the Smart 21, the ICF focused on cities with “a documented strategy for creating a local prosperity and inclusion using broadband and information technology to attract leading edge businesses, build skills, generate economic growth and improve the delivery of government services”. From our city's website: "Utilities Kingston and Kingsto...

I wrote a blog post  back in 2010 about The Book of Awesome and yesterday, I listened to the author, Neil Pasricha (a former student of our Queen's University in Kingston, ON) being interviewed on CBC Radio with Shelagh Rogers: The Next Chapter.  He was AWESOME!!   The followup success of his idea has just been incredible. What they were asking him was The Proust Questionnaire and I just LOVED his responses and I will tell you my favourite at the end of this post. If you'd like to listen in:  CBC Radio with Neil Pasricha  (Neil's portion of the show begins at 48:48) In case you haven't heard of this all important questionnaire, "MARCEL PROUST was a French writer who believed that people must know and understand themselves before they could know or understand others.   He developed a lis...

I like to treat my Sellers like VIPs because that is what they are to me.   I like to make sure their home is opened up, lights on, fire lit and everything looking as welcoming as possible when the Buyers and their agents arrive. Most Sellers are away at work when the Buyers arrive so this extra service is something that is greatly appreciated. Today, our first day back on the job, we had our first showing of the year and I arrived, 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled appointment to see a gathering of workmen in front of the house. YIKES!  A snowplow, a dumptruck and a few other assorted work vehicles were parked in front of the driveway with a couple of men directing traffic. As I pulled up I saw lines/wires down across the driveway.  And there, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the pole ....

Living On Food Stamps: Newark Mayor Cory Booker Starts Challenge Today This amounts to $30 a week for food - no, not for your lunch today . . .   FOR THE WEEK!  Could you do it? UPDATE:  STUNT OR LEARNING EXPERIENCE? UPDATE:  WHAT ITS LIKE TO EAT ON $4.32 A DAY   (I don't think he's a very good shopper:  Booker will have to survive off 17 cans of beans, seven yams, two bags of frozen vegetables and two apples for the next seven days)  {now we also know he bought Organic Olive Oil and 2 packages of premixed salad greens ???} Mayor Booker is quoted as saying he used the majority of his food stamps to buy mostly on fruits, some vegetables and "lots of beans".  I don't know where he shops but he's not going to get a good amount of fresh fruit and veggies for $30 let alone the rest of his me...

How would you feel if your brand, what you're known by, was ordered to be changed? Your skillfully designed logo deemed illegal ?  Six big box companies say no more!  They're headed to court to challenge it and they include: Wal-Mart, Costco, Best Buy, Gap, Old Navy and Guess. According to Section 63 of Quebec’s French Language Charter, the name of a business must be in French.   Should it apply to trademarked names? Nathalie St-Pierre, vice-president for the Retail Council of Canada’s Quebec branch says the province wants to change the rules without having modified the law . . . “You know the brand, you know the colours, you know the sign,” Ms. St-Pierre said of the famous company logos. “That’s the work that’s done behind setting up a trademark and there are brands that stand on their...

Kingston, Ontario This week sees another successful sale for Susan Emo, Sales Representative with RE/MAX Riverview Realty Ltd.   After several attempts, (everything happens for a reason!) my first time buyers are celebrating the successful purchase of this cutie patootie that's in the City of Kingston but feels like country living!   Many times, a person will believe a particular place is for them, only to discover there is another plan.   I've seen it over and over again and I always tell my clients to "not fall in love with a place until the keys are in your hand".   Life has a funny way of happening and just when you think you know what is going on, you're faced with something different. My first time buyers didn't know this home existed until they had exhausted what they thought wer...
