Perhaps it would have made more sense if I had come here in the summer and taken some nice pictures, and maybe I will, but I also believe there is a certain beauty in winter. Perhaps it's because nobody else is around and I'm in a rather contemplative mood. Or maybe because I just happen to be driving by and had my camera handy. This is Roblin Lake, a small inland lake in Prince Edward County. It's very beautiful in the summer, there's a small beach here, and sometimes people come here for a swim, the water's very clean. Usually. Until 2007, the Salvation Army had a rather large summer camp on the shores of Roblin Lake. Under privileged children from all over Ontario would spend their summers here for over 80 years. While the Salvation Army no longer has a camp here, it's still a popula...

The hamlet of Ameliasburgh is one of the prettier places in Prince Edward County. It was named after Princess Amelia, the fifteenth child of King George III. I suppose Amelia's children wouldn't have had much of a shot at becoming kings or queens, so I hope she took some solace in having this picturesque little place named after her. Ameliasburgh is situated right on County Road 19, a quiet and curvy road, very pleasant for a motorcycle trip in the summer months, and for such a small place, there are a surprising number of things to see, especially if one is interested in local history. The old church on the Main Street, originally built in 1868 as a Wesleyan Methodist Church was converted into the Ameliasburgh Historical Museum in 1968. It is now part of a full pioneer village that inc...

The weekend is off to a good start, I have finished my Saturday open houses. Both of them went very well and there was a fairly good turnout. They were the busiest open houses I've had in a while. I think people are starting to get back to business now that the summer's coming to an end. The weather's still very nice, so maybe that's encouraging folks to get out a bit. Quinte Open Houses for Sunday August 26 2012. Sunday August 26 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 1272 Old Wooler Road, MLS # 2122443 This economical two bedroom home sits on a quiet one acre lot between Codrington and Wooler, not too far from Brighton or Trenton. It has a metal roof, a large work shop, a gazebo, large rooms, an open kitchen with an eating area, an attached garage with inside entry and lots of upgrades. Call me for detail...

One of the more difficult aspects of adjusting to life in a rural area is getting to know the lay of the land. Sometimes the locals don't help that much. It's not that they mean to be difficult, but it's human nature to assume that people know the same things you do. One example of this in the Prince Edward County is that roads often have more than one name, the official name and the name that everybody calls it. A prime example of this would be County Road 3 in Prince Edward County, simply known as Rednersville Road to people who live in the area. If someone has asked me where County road 3 was, I would have had to consult a map (or my Paper GPS, as I like to call them). Had they asked where Rednersville Road was, I could have told them right away. County Road 3 is one of the nicer dri...

Everybody who has driven into Prince Edward County on Highway 33 will have driven through Carrying Place. I'm sure a lot of people will have missed the sign and have been unaware that they were actually in a hamlet, there's really not much to distinguish it as a seperate entity from the scattering of houses that precede it on the highway. There is, however, a significant importance attached to this quaint little place. The Murray Canal ends up in Carrying Place, which is important enough, but long before the canal was finished in 1882, this was the end of an important portage trail that the first nations people and later the traders had been using for centuries. I suppose when the boats became too big to be carried on people's heads for eight miles, the canal was built. The name "Carryi...

This is a little late. Thanksgiving weekend was a couple of weekends ago, but I have been a little slow in organizing photographs. My computer crashed, so there were a few days where I had to use the public use clunker in the office. I don't download personal photos to that computer. Anyhow, the kids came back for the Thanksgiving weekend, and we had a very relaxing time. Malcolm came back with a fancy new haircut and Sarah came back sporting her usual smile. It was almost as if they had never been anywhere, they just settled back into their normal routine very quickly. The weekend, alas, went by very quickly, and Malcolm took the bus back to his new home, and Sarah hopped on the train back to hers. We managed to have quite a bit of fun while they were here though, and I think they were...

No pedestrians were harmed in the filming of this videoI took my daughter out for a driving lesson last night. It was our third time. The area around Carrying Place is perfect for this because the roads are wide and there's not too much traffic. It's a relatively stress-free place to learn how to drive. On our last excursion some hillbilly in a red pick-up truck gave us the finger because we were driving a bit too slow for his liking. Screw him anyway.I really have no idea why I'm posting this video other than to get the world to see what a beautiful and talented daughter I have. She may get her good looks from her mom, but she's definitely going to get her driving skills from me.
