James Herbert Brockett was born in Lincoln Center, Kansas back in 1893.  He was a member of the First Christian Church in Omaha, Nebraska where he sang in the choir.  He served in World War I as a pilot instructor at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas, being discharged as a first lieutenant in 1919.After the war, he became an airmail pilot.  He worked with the Postal Service and local civic leader to set up a system of navigational beacons and emergency landing strips.  In 1925, he worked at National Air Transport Inc which later became United Airlines.  He flew the DC-3 flying passenger flights, later becoming a vice president of the company.  He died in 1945 from malaria.What you may not know about James is that he was adopted and took on the last name of his adoptive parents Knight. Marion Keisker was born in Memphis, Tennessee back in 1917.  She graduated from Southwester College with a degree in English and Medieval French.  She married Angus and had a son who she named after the father.  She was a radio show host for WREC becoming a station manager and later Sam Phillips assistant.  She also worked at the Memphis Recording Service and Sun Records.  She left Sun Records and joined the U.S. Air Force, commissioned as a captain and served as information office in charge of the Armed Forces television station at the Ramstein base in Germany.  She left the Air Force in 1969, moving back to Memphis where she became active in the Memphis chapter of the National Organization for Women.  Her correspondence is archived at the Memphis Public Library.  She died in 1989, she...

William Adams was born in Gillingham, Kent, England back in 1564.  His father died when he was twelve so he apprenticed to a shipyard owner.  For the next twelve years he learned about shipbuilding, astronomy and navigation before entering the Royal Navy.  Serving under Sir Francis Drake he saw action against the Spanish Armada in 1588.Afterwards, he became a pilot for the Barbary Company, he was sent to find a Northeast Passage along the coast of Siberia to the Far East.  That voyage lasted for two years.  When he returned he shipped out as pilot major with a five-ship fleet to South America with a goal to arrive in Chile, Peru and other kingdoms.  The ships were caught up in a storm and lost sight of each other.  His ship arrived in Japan in 1600 after more than nineteen months at sea...

Joseph Jenckes was born in St. Ann Blackfriars, London, England back in 1599 to John and Sarah.  His father was a sword and cutlery maker.  He followed in his father’s footsteps.  He married Joan Hearne in 1627.  They had two children both dying at a very young age, Joan died in 1635. After her death in 1642, he immigrated to New England arriving in New Hampshire in 1643.  Two years later he was working at the Saugus Iron Works in Lynn, Massachusetts Bay.  In 1655, he received a 14-year patent for a new kind of water-driven machine to make sawmill saw blades and other edged tools.  That same year he was granted a 7-year patent for an improved scythe, his scythe remains virtually unchanged to this day.  it is reported he cut the first dies for the first coins minted in America.  He died ...

Well we made it through another Winter and this is the first week of Spring.  Spring is such a great time of the year. The cold winter is but a distance memory and we start to enjoy all the things that the warm weather brings. As I have spent the past few days dealing with the Blizzard of 2011, I have realized how thankful I am to be in Oklahoma more importantly in the Tahlequah area. While the rest of the country has been hit hard by the storm,  we have had our part of bad weather but nothing in comparisan to other parts of Oklahoma not to mention the country. We are so fortunate to be in this part of Oklahoma with some of the most beautiful scenery in Oklahoma and some of the finest hunting and fishing the state has to offer. Tahlequah is not only the county seat of Cherokee County but is also the home to the Cherokee Nation. This area of the state is rich in Native American history. You can see the influence of the Cherokee culture throughout Tahlequah. In 2009 Tahlequah was listed as one the Top Ten True ...
