Tarrytown, NY Real Estate News

Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow have been in the midst of a buyer’s market for some time. This has been particularly true of the single-family home market in the area. The higher tax rates that some of the river towns deal with put this particular market into bearish mode rather early in the correction when compared to other areas of Westchester. One of the symptoms of a buyer’s market is low volume. Volume was way down on the cooperative market. So much so that there weren’t enough sales to run pricing statistics with any accuracy - which is why they are omitted. Condo prices and volume were down significantly when compared to the previous year. But single family homes that have been really beaten down in the last few quarters - had a volume consistent with 2007 levels - significantly dow...

Friday was a very busy day for me. I had tried to attend the Annual Pet Parade last year and work got in the way...and I almost had to bypass it this year as well. But I was able to work out a very short and fashionably late attendance and was glad I did. The parade begins on Route 9 and extends down Main Street. Animal rescue and, pet products, and anything to do with pets in general was out in force. There were “Pooch Games” sponsored by Bark & Meow. Greyhound rescue was out in force with dogs that are up for adoption. Best Friends (Doggie Day Care) made their presence known by having a street booth. I was only able to stay a short while and take a few pictures (not my best while holding Jade and Tundra on leashes.) Third Friday’s are fun for everyone - with specials all along the rou...

Recently, I wrote a series of blogs about Sleepy Hollow. One was about the Sleepy Hollow portion of the River Walk, which is a very ambitious plan to create a long linear park where one could literally walk along the Hudson River from the Putnam County border all the way to the border of the Bronx. I had several photos of the River Walk from Sleepy Hollow from Ichabod’s Landing - which is a work in progress that has stalled because of the controversy surrounding the development at Lighthouse Landing. Yesterday, I took some time to take a walk along the Tarrytown portion of the River Walk – just south and one train stop south of Sleepy Hollow. Much of the River walk has been in use for sometime there. What is new is the park along with the development at Ferry Landing which is to be a co...

Early this evening I took  Jade and Tundra on a trail that I don't take very often...The Tarrytown Lakes.  It's a short flat trail perfect for a casual stroll or vigorous walk.  It is paved and many local residents bike, walk or job this trail quite frequently.  It appears to be a favorite for joggers as the hills are minimal. The walk begins (or ends) at Saw Mill Road just off the Saw Mill River Parkway and ends (or begins) right at the edge of the Marymount College entrence.  It is a quiet walk where you don't hear the whiz of traffic on the other side of the lakes (reservoirs.)  For those who want an "easy trail" with few surprises, this is an excellent walk to take.     To Search for Homes and for further information go to my website/blog with free home search at The Westchester Vie...

Once again, I got carried away with pictures!  So I decided to post a pictures that I didn't include in my first blog on February's Third Friday in Tarrytown, NY.  The First set of Photos is from Baby Bee's Children's Boutique.  They had such a wonderful array of things for youngsters - that I couldn't help but click away.... Here is a sample:                                                                From the Flying Fingers Yarn Shop which lended itself to fabulous color photos:                                                On a more formal and sophisticated note, here are some photos from Gallery du Soleil.                              My next stop was Bark & Meow where the NYC dog was reigning supreme!  They had coats and collars and leashes with all the subway lines on them! The third Friday of every month is a busy day if you are merchant in Tarrytown,  NY. That’s because the village and merchants in conjunction with Chamber of Commerce and other supporters bring a special evening of shopping, dining and entertainment to the public every third Friday of each month from 5-9 PM. Over the past year, since I have been bringing my two huskies to the dog park at Kingsland Point Dog Park, I had been hearing a great deal about  Tarrytown (and Sleepy Hollow’s) “Third Fridays.” So this month I decided to go there myself for an hour or so and see what was happening.  I went early in order to take pictures and I wasn’t disappointed.  The area participating in  Third Friday  covers  Main Street and extends for about three blocks in each direction on North Broadway. Amo...

For pet-lovers everywhere, here is a wonderful upscale pet store that is on every well-dressed pets list.  Bark & Meow has a wonderful assortment of  items for almost every need.  I was introduced to pet –blinkers (mentioned on a previous blog) at this store.  I’ve bought several adjustable collars for my three dogs.  Tundra is now on her second collar.  I also bought  a couple of terrific 6-foot leashes that are excellent for training purposes.  The assortment is amazing.  They even have “political sweatshirts” for your pet to sport his or her political preferences…One thing they have which I tend not to think of as a necessity is plenty of dog coats.  Having Huskies, a dog coat would be ridiculous, but for dogs with no undercoat, the damp and cold of the Northeast winter makes a coat ...

The Coffee Labs is conveniently located on Main Street right off North Broadway (Route 9.)  When people ask local residents why they don’t have a Starbucks, the response is “We don’t need one, we already have the best coffee in Westchester!” And they will point the visitor in the direction of the Coffee Labs.  Inn fact, if Coffee Labs every decides to franchise,  Starbucks should watch its step.  Coffee Labs has a quality and style that really challenges the status quo.  Having a Cuban background on one side of my family, I can safely say that I am a coffee snob – and for my taste buds, coffee labs beats Starbucks hands down. For local resident’s the Coffee Labs is conveniently located en route to the Tarrytown Train Station and is pretty much “on the way” to most business destinations ...

The Tarrytown Music Hall was built in 1885 and is the oldest operating theater in Westchester County. Located on 13 Main Street right off of North Broadway (Route 9) it is conveniently located in the center of town.  Originally it was a venue for many varieties of entertainment. It started showing silent movies in 1901 and from the 1930s – 1970s the Music Hall was used exclusively as a  movie theater.  In the 1980s,  the Friends of Mozartina – a not-for-profit group purchased  the Music Hall and have successfully preserved it  as an historic landmark while restoring it as a venue for both live performance as well as film. I have personally enjoyed many performances in this handsome theater and the restoration makes one feel as if you are stepping back in time to the turn of the last cen...

The Landmark is a gorgeous complex in the heart of Tarrytown, NY.  Built originally as a school in 1897, it has many original features that add charm and style.  Just steps from Main Street and all that it has to offer including fine dining, the famous Tarrytown Music Hall, antique shops and much more.  When you walk your dog in the morning, feel free to stop by the famous Coffee Labs – Tarrytown’s answer to Starbucks. You can get your all-important first cup of the day - freshly roasted  - along with a treat for fido – dogs are WELCOME.  During the summer, many of the restaurants have outdoor eating and I’ve seen dogs seated outside the main eating area – enjoying the evening with their owners.  In general, there is a fairly substantial canine population in the area. You can see people...
