The Old Dutch Village Garden Club annual plant sale is a great place to get plants for your garden, and the timing is perfect since here in Red Hook the advice is to put in your plants after Memorial Day. This is a popular event since the plants are reasonable priced, they will go rather quickly so the trick is to get there early.  Then after you have secured your plants go over to the the bake goods table and I know you won;t be disappointed. During the month of April the Town of Red Hook and The villages of Red Hook and  Tivoli had  combined sales of 5 of which 2 were bank owned properties.  The sale price ranged from $142,500 -272,500 which is similar to the rest of the county in the sense that  most of the sales are in the lower end of the market.  In the month of March in Red Hook the number of active listings under $400,000 numbered 34, of which 12 had price reductions.  Within the $400,000 to $999,000 range there were 18 available listings and 8 of those had price reductions.  Above $1,000,000 there were 4 listings with one price reduction.  The average price in the active category was $508,964.00 and this was only because of the 4 listings over $1,000,000. Of the 4 sales, 3 were in the $200,000 range and this pattern is also noticeable in other towns; here is where most action is being seen. I managed to fit in the February 12th Garden Club meeting into my schedule; the topic that day was Bonsai.  Although I love gardening, that is one aspect I never thought I would want to try.  The Presenter was Michael Devlin whose talk and show and tell kept us all engaged.  He brought in several different creations - one he had nurtured for 40 years. He started out by stating that Bonsai should not be given as a gift to extremely busy people and I suppose that's a category I am in. So here are a few tips I picked up. You know a Bonsai needs to be repotted if you stick a chopstick in the soil and it has problem going down. It is always such a great idea when the older and younger generations get together.  At the Mill Road Elementary School in Red Hook NY the K-2 classes will be hosting the First Annual Senior Citizen Snowflake Tea.  This will be held next Wednesday February 11th at  1:45-2:30 in the K-2 cafeteria where seniors will be served tea and cookies, with entertainment provided by the children.   This will not be the only opportunity to interact with the children.  Mrs. Donna Gaynor Principal of the Mill Road K-2 classes established a program where seniors could have the opportunity to read to primary school students.  This truly will be a win win for all.   Red Hook NY Real Estate Market Report January 2009  During January there were several snow storms as well as icy condition in Red Hook NY.  This did not mean that real estate came to a stand still; several new properties came on the market and about 6 others now have accepted offers. For the month there was just one sale.  This 3454 square feet home was assessed $416,000 but sold as a short sale for only $230,000.  Such a sale can certainly have an impact on the marketplace, this is a property that will be used by appraiser when doing an appraisal of a similar home in the area.  The point is, a short sale or a foreclosure affects more than the people directly involved. If your Dutchess County home is scheduled for showing tomorrow you might have spent today shoveling.  Two weeks in a row we have had bad weather, first ice, then lots of fluffy snow. It is important to provide access to buyers but only if the conditions are right. Here are a few steps to take before agreeing to a showing during the winter months. Shovel or plow your driveway or path to the door. You might need to apply salt or similar products to the driveway to keep it free of ice.  The forecast for tomorrow is for lower temperatures, some wind and icy conditions. Make sure steps are also clean and free of ice. Provide a mat for people to wipe their shoes.
