New Ro Runners merged in 2012 with the Sound Shore Runners  together with the Multi-sport Club under the New Ro Runners name, and their mission is to basically bring together all levels, all ages, and to create a healthy and happy running environment. Today was the first ever North Avenue Mile “How Fast Can you Run a Mile Race?” which started at Paine Avenue and went to City Hall.   There were approximately 320 athletes who had entered the race, and there were 6 ‘waves’ of runners (different age groups) which included:  Under 8  (Family walkers), 8-11 year olds, 12-19, 60 Year Olds +, Women 20-59, and Men 20-59. There was a great atmosphere there this morning, and while I was only able to stay for the first ‘wave’ to start, I certainly got caught up in the excitement, bringing back my...

The French Huguenots, in seeking religious freedom came to the Americas in the 17th Century  after having been denied protection by King Louis IVth….  but where to live? The  Governor of New York, Jacob Leisler, acted as the agent on behalf of the French Huguenots, and appealed to John Pell to see if he would sell 6000 acres to the Huguenots. In 1688, the Huguenots began settling in what became New Rochelle and so named after their French town of “La Rochelle.” “A condition in the sale was that Leisler or his heirs would provide “John Pell his heirs and assigns, of the said Manor of Pelham … as an Acknowledgement to the said Manor one fatt calfe on every fouer and twentyth day of June Yearly and Every Year forever (if demanded),” as included by Swiatek and Breen.” Today marked a mome...

Yesterday, I went to visit a nice home in New Rochelle NY.  My new buyer is planning to move in there in August.  It's a large home.  And, it has hardwood almost everywhere - on all 3 floors...about 3,000 sf...but almost all of it is covered up. Now, it's often that I see carpet on top of hardwood, especially in homes where people have lived for 20-30 yrs.  But, my or my, every room in this house was a discovery (and most of the floors were there since the mid 80's or earlier.  Upstairs, the master bedroom room has carpet on top of hardwood.  Score.  The next bedroom has carpet on top of vinyl tile (okay, it costs more to remove 2 layers, but doable). The next room had carpet on top of sheet vinyl.  The 4th bedroom had carpet on top of asbestos tile (okay, that one was a bummer so most ...

The Farmer’s Market is now open for business!  Called ” New Rochelle Downtown Grand Market” there will be alternating and special featured vendors each week at the Library Green, New Rochelle. Today, for instance, Coromandel was the featured restaurant.  There is a calendar on the web site for the weekly vendors. Today’s vendors included: Newgate Farms, Pain Le Bris, Breezy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill, New York State Vineyards, Coromandel, The Iron Tomato, The Migliorelli Farm, Gaby’s Red Coral Seafood & Co. and more! The market was officially opened last Saturday with Mayor Noam Bransom in attendance, and will be open through October 26th 9-2 p.m. Since it was lunch time while I was there, I was so tempted to purchase a dish called “Ragada” from Coromandel ( love that restaurant),  spic...

A picture says a thousand words! June 6th marked the momentous occasion of New Rochelle’s 325th  Anniversary with a Gala Dinner Dance.  The event took place at the Glen Island Harbor Club, and it was received with rave reviews!   There was an open bar, many food stations (  smoked salmon being served with iced vodka or champagne if desired, a pasta station,  roasted meats – lamb, chicken, beef, salads galore (a delicious seafood salad),  fruits, shellfish and more pasta… something for everyone).  So many familiar faces, and all having a good time. Approximately 600 guests were in attendance, and as we were asked to venture up to our tables and to the dance floor  (and more open bars), there was also a nice selection of items on hand for silent auction. Yours truly bid on 4 items, but di...

New Rochelle is commemorating its 325th Anniversary -  and why not!    Huguenots fleeing  Catholic pogroms in France found their way to America in 1688,  and  since many were originally artisans and craftsmen from the French town of ‘La Rochelle’, decided to call their new town “New Rochelle”. Over the years and centuries, many different  immigrants with different cultures and traditions have settled in our great city, and former city councilwoman Marianne Sussman,  has spearheaded a year of different events for all to partake and enjoy. Tonight is the Gala Dinner Dance and the tickets have all sold out! Starting at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, with dinner following at 7:30 p.m. at the  Glen Harbor Island Club. The Lester Lanin Orchestra will be performing, there wil...

I  love to read Daniel Silva's books. Always informative, gripping and exciting (so many superlatives!). "The Fallen Angel" is no exception. When a lady is killed within the Vatican, retired Israeli Intelligence officer, Gabriel Allon, is called by his friend Monsignor Luigi Donati. to assist. Donati has his own suspicions on what happened, but needs the help of someone who will be honest with him, and perhaps help to keep the outcome from the news.... The book is full of intrigue both on the local Italian level but also on an International and Middle Eastern level, as tomb robbers are stealing artifacts from local tombs, and priceless antiquities from the Middle East to help fund terrorist activities world-wide. A very exciting book, and you will not be disappointed when you read it! P...

Interesting book. I would describe Stephen Hunter as being a man's writer... so that being said, it was no surprise that he was losing me a little when he was going into great detail about shell casings, grooves, different guns/different bullets, velocity, time delay, etc., etc..  However, the reason he was going into such detail was because he had a different approach to President Kennedy's assassination... I will not give away the ending, but the book is about Bob Lee Swagger, an older gentleman, former military man, and whose varied knowledge on the CIA, former ops, is formidable. He is intrigued when he learns that a writer who was investigating President Kennedy's assassination is murdered by a Russian hit man... So intrigued, that he spends his own money to start his own investiga...

I read this article earlier today, and I just can't get it out of my head.  It's a cool reunion - a local holocaust survivor from New Rochelle is reunited with an army veteran who was involved in the liberation of Buchenwald.  You can read the full article here: Buchenwald survivor fom New Rochelle united with camp liberator.   They both tell their story.  And, now after 70 years, they are reunited.  I thought that was pretty cool.   But, what got me even more is the realization that my grandfather was there that day, too.  Same place same time.   I would have loved to have shared this article with my grandfather and see what he had to say and add.  I never really got to talk to my grandfather about this.  In fact, I didn't even know about it until many years later...at the time of the ...

I started to laugh when I heard that at last night's appointment.  I didn't even think and blurted out, "Why?  Because I'm not a guy?"  And, she said, "Yes, but it's more than that.  You seem nice and friendly...and helpful."  She then told me that I came highly recommended from one of her neighbors.  She is moving from one house in New Rochelle to another, and looking to refinish her hardwood floors, as well as paint/remove wallpaper.  She thought it was really cool that I owned my own flooring business.   Crossing my fingers on this one.

Did you know that for just $300 per year, you can join the Rochelle Heights Racquet Club and enjoy tennis from May until October. There are 2 red clay courts available for use, and while the courts are located within the Historic area, the courts are actually open to all – as long as they pay the dues! Interesting to note, when the court temperatures can register 100 degrees elsewhere , the courts in Rochelle Heights are 20 degrees cooler due to the shade provided. Sounds Great? There is more! As you get older, and those joints get stiffer, the red clay tennis court is gentler on those knees. Margaret Chadwick, Vice President of the Rochelle Heights Neighborhood Association mentioned that the 2 courts are perhaps the oldest non-private red clay courts in the United States ! All member...

I met a nice couple last night in New Rochelle, and they wanted to replace the carpet in the living room, dining room, hallway and steps.  They were looking for something that would help hide the dirt better, but still be nice quality.   I was so excited for them when I peaked in their closet and found they have hardwood floors.  They had no idea.  The carpet had been in place for 20 years and they forgot to ask the carpet installer what was underneath.  This felt like we discovered gold.   First, the hardwood will look so much nicer, and it will be much easier to clean.  Second, it will improve their home's value when they eventually sell (maybe 10 yrs from now).  Third, it will save them a lot of money.  Most likely the sanding and refinishing will cost them about half the cost of the...

I am always so perplexed why some some sports are treated far differnetly than others. Great Britain has competed in every single Summer and Winter Olympic Games , and in Atlanta, 1996, came in 36th – the lowest ranking ever for the nation due to the increased number of countries competing, and winning just one gold medal and 15 medals in total which was the lowest amount of medals won since 1952. The single gold medal was won by Matthew Pinsent and Steve Redgrave (now Sir Steve Redgrave and 5 Time Olympic Gold Medalist) in rowing. It was with these sad memories in mind that when Great Britain competed as the host nation for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, and won ( making London the first city to have won a third bid as host), the nation realized that if they wanted to compete well, and...

Oh my!, La Cienega Restaurant, located at 179 Main Street, New Rochelle , 10804 offers simply delicious cuisine. My husband and I dined there last night with friends (and clients), and we were not disappointed. Featured here is the Palmito salad, a scrumptious hearts of palm salad with baby spinach, onion, orange, cucumber, peppers, cucumber with an orange ginger dressing. Presented beautifully, there was a crunch to the salad and the piquant dressing was the perfect accompaniment. My friend ordered the herbs and baby greens with pepitas, cilantro, cranberries…. The red snapper with a timbale of black beans looked and tasted wonderful as did the grilled shrimp. The restaurant was packed with people waiting for tables – always a good sign for a local restaurant, and this one is here to ...

Back on February 11th, 2011, I had written on there are so many Russian internet visitors on the Houlihan Lawrence web site. I am now seeing more and more “Мы говорим на русском” which translates to “We Speak Russian” on company real estate web sites.   It is a simple fact, that many wealthy Russians are coming here to buy properties and it just makes obvious sense to attract those buyers and investors. It used to be just English, and then then perhaps English and French. Of course Spanish was not far behind, and then Chinese but the new ‘au courant’ language is definitely Russian!      I am finding myself marketing to agents who perhaps have Russian clientele in addition of course to every other marketing tool I can think of. With Sochi (the next Winter Olympics) around the corner i...

If you live in or near New Rochelle then you would have heard of the Viva Grande Fruit Market. There is a vast array of fruits, vegetables, meats and produce to choose from and all at unbelievable prices. Whenever I (or seemingly anyone else) is cooking for guests, then you will find us there, carting huge bags of produce away and always wondering at the low cost of everything. I just bought some Fuyu fruit there (I never seem to find it anywhere else) and they were delicious... just 6 for $4.99. I also purchased kirby cucumbers for pickling - fresh and inexpensive ($1 for 1 lb). There is a distinctive Mexican air to the store because of the Mexican and South American food items on display and available, and so I know that if I need that special ingredient for a South American or Mexic...
