Recognized as one of the world's ten best gardens, Innisfree is a powerful icon of mid-twentieth century design.  Over 50 years in the making, it is the work of landscape architect Lester Collins with important contributions by his clients, artist and teacher Walter Beck and gardener and heiress Marion Burt Beck.I visited Innisfree yesterday in Millbrook, New York and at its core, Innisfree is about the individual's experience in nature. Inviting exploration and even contemplation, the sweeping landscape merges the essence of Modernist and Romantic ideas with traditional Chinese and Japanese garden design. This design form is called a cup garden.  It's roots are in ancient chinese paintings and the cup garden draws attention to something rare and at Innisfree the cup garden concept becam...

Millbrook is a small  Village in Dutchess County in the town of Washington.  What I like about the village is that you can walk to most things.  There is a charming diner a place where people meet for coffee; then there is the Merritt Bookstore which holds many book signing events.  As well as several fine restaurant and a great library.  Since the area is popular with second homeowners on the weekend the population swells. Back on September 22nd I went to Millbrook to the Luxury Home Resource Home show.  What a difference a month makes; look at all the green foliage. The home show was hosted by Crisp Architects and the variety of vendors really made the show special.  I was especially fascinated by the craftsman who hand made sinks and other stuff out of concrete.  These were really custom items since the mold was destroyed after each piece. I then took a ride through Millbrook; and now you have a chance to Come along for the ride through Millbrook NY.     Copyright © by Jennifer Fivelsdal, all rights reserved-Come along for the ride through Millbrook NY ________________________________________________________________  Millbrook Real Estate Report Village of Millbrook real estate for Sale

Speechless Sunday -Sometimes do you feel like you are upside down? I took this shot about 2 years ago and since then I have not been able to find the notes I made; therefore I can't tell you much about this sculpture.  I am thinking it was made out of paper mache. My attention was especially drawn to the hands.  What feature of this sculpture jumped out at you? I think at times we all feel a bit upside down.   JFIVE HOMES REALTY LLC - 845-758-6842- jennifer@jfivehomes.com  and www.jfivehomes.com     Flickr | Facebook | Linked-in |Twitter |subscribe to Blog    Copyright © by Jennifer Fivelsdal, all rights reserved-Speechless Sunday -Sometimes do you feel like you are upside down?

Last week while showing properties in Millbrook NY I came across this beautiful scene.  Of course I had my camera handy and decided to add it to my collection. I suspect by the end of this week this scene will be even more colorful.  There is no denying it;  fall is here. This Saturday, December 20th, Annie Leibovitz will be giving a talk and signing her new book, " Annie Leibovitz at work".  Most of us are familiar with her work which includes photographs of many famous personalities, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The new book features her photographs and will tell the story of what was involved in getting the finished product. Ann Leibovitz has signed books at the Merritt Bookstore before and the event was very successful.  Scot Meyer, the owner of the bookstore suggests calling ahead to sign up for participation.     Location: 57 Front Street, Millbrook, NY 12545 Telephone: 845-677-5857 Time: 12:45 PM Date: Saturday, December 20th, 2008 Get Map     By: Jennifer Fivelsdal -licensed Real Estate Broker - JFIVE Homes Realty LLC   845-758-6842  jenni...

One of my favorite things to do in the Hudson Valley is to visit the local wineries. Another of my favorite things - summer nights on my patio, relaxing and sipping a glass of wine. A few years back, I established Hump Night - which quickly became a big hit amongst my friends and neighbors. Every Wednesday evening, weather permitting - we gather for a casual mid-week get together. Occasionally, our conversations grow endless and a Wednesday evening will often turn into a Thursday morning. We just love to gather for a chat and enjoy each other's company, putting aside the stress of our weekday routines. I can't think of a better way to relax than sipping wine on a warm summer night, while sitting under the stars with friends. We are a group of very hard working people. By Wednesday, we f...

A unique architectural site & tourist attraction in the Millbrook area that shouldn't be missed is Wing Castle. Using salvaged materials from antique buildings, this stone fortress was built and fashioned as a medieval castle by the actual residents, owner/architects Peter and Toni Wing. The castle with 7 towers and moat took more than 23 years to build and they are still not finished. At the age of twenty-one Peter Wing returned from Vietnam and started building a home for himself and his family using recycled materials. For thirty years he and his wife are proud owners of a medieval castle visited by hundreds of tourists every year. Here is Peter Wing's story:http://cityguide.pojonews.com/fe/Arts/stories/art_wings_castle.asp                                                             ...

Innisfree was designed as the private garden for Walter and Marion Beck (heiress to a Minnesota mining fortune). In 1960, Innnisfree was opened to the public, as provided for by the Beck's will. The artistic gardens at Innisfree, near Millbrook, New York, were created in the 1920s to reflect the philosophy and aesthetics of Chinese gardens. Experiencing Innisfree means taking an inspiring journey and exploring nature through ancient Chinese artistic tradition. The Innisfree Garden boasts an international heritage and a global reputation. Known primarily for its beauty. This is one of the most beautiful and unique gardens in the world: two hundred acres of woods and gardens wound around a forty acre lake cradled within hills. A unique formal garden disguised as an enchanted landscape.Inn...
