Living in Long Beach, NY there are many condos and co-ops with indoor pools. In NY, where we get to below zero tempreatures in winter, it is certainly a luxury to be able to sit by an indoor pool,  simply relaxing with your favorite book or newspaper as snow falls outside. Some indoor pools even boast beautiful ocean views, so you could enjoy lounging by the pool as you soak in the lovely scenery. The school district topic comes up so frequently in real estate conversation, I've decided to repost an article written a couple of years back for another round of for and against: As a real estate agent, I often anticipate the buyers' request to limit the home search to those properties found within the boundaries of the very best school district. Naturally, I respect that wish as I'm lining up houses to show.          Still, I can't help but wonder why that preoccupation exists. Please understand that I'm not advocating failing schools nor those with a reputation for violence - only delightful, ordinary neighborhood schools.   Years ago, we didn't worry about these things. Whatever school you were zoned for is the one you attended. And most of us grew up just fine, achieved and even p...

City by the Sea - Happy Pride All the generations were here and the mood was euphoric in the 3rd annual Gay Pride Parade held in Long Beach, NY. The celebration, consisting of a concert, with Macy Gray as headliner, a fair and festival, pet parade, fun trot, cabaret and religious services was spread out over an entire weekend in various locations throughout the city. Participants came from near and far and Long Beach was well prepared with security, sanitation, parking alternatives, medical aid and relief stations. All in all, it's become a very successful event in this new venue on the beach and destined to be a regular stop during Pride month each year. Long Beach exudes a warm and welcoming vibe to all, reminiscent of Greenwich Village in New York City.  Visit our City by the Sea and...

Your Suburban Life - Are You Ready? Hot Brooklyn neighborhoods come with exorbitant pricetags. Familiar names like Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Sunset Park, Kensington, Clinton Hill and a host of others are rarely within reach for young families.  For example, a modest $489,000 can buy you a 1 or 2 bedroom/one bath co-op/condo; on average between 750 and 850 sq. ft. No parking, no outdoor space and to call it move-in ready would be a huge stretch of anyone's imagination. Compare that to a renovated 2/3 bedroom/ 2 bath home, a reasonable commute away, and you can easily tack on a backyard, basement, garage and twice the square footage to that description.  Easy decision? Hardly.  But you will have plenty of time to flirt with different scenarios while you consider this huge transition. Y...

HomeShoppers:  Great value in the ones you pass on Some buyers begin the process thinking they know exactly what they want. But sometimes, their must haves don't match their budget or what a neighborhood typically offers so they need to start anew. Other buyers have no idea in the world what they are looking for and want to see it all. To be openminded is definitely a good thing but, in order for the homeshopping outings to make sense and begin to take shape, our immediate goal is to zero in on a particular part of town before we can narrow it down to a residence. Last weekend, you toured 5 homes and you didn't like a single one! This is not a waste of time. Do not despair. Consider this: It's only when we know what we absolutely don't want that we can begin to articulate what makes us ...

Long Beach, NY - The City by the Sea - Where have all our surfers gone? You know the weather is bad when our ubiquitous surfing population is nowhere to be found. Yesterday, there was a blizzard that dumped an average of 12 inches of snow on the ground. With heavy winds and dropping temperatures, venturing outside to take pictures rapidly became an idea bordering on the insane. Guilty as charged. I've never seen the ocean before in a snowstorm and, now,  I can cross that off my bucket list. It's very pretty and eerily quiet.   But mostly it's cold. Really, really cold.  At the polar plunge, I jested that I could easily participate if the event were to be held in the middle of the summer to which my husband immediately retorted, "Who's going to pay a bunch of people to jump into the wate...

Long Beach, NY - The City by the Sea - Polar Bear Plunge RevisitedSuperbowl Sunday, February 5th, 2017 In the tri-state area today, we're having a snowstorm. It's a big one - 12-18 inches. It was only yesterday that unseasonable mild temperatures were up in the low 60's. It felt glorious.  These crazy weather patterns have made for an interesting winter. Right before that was Long Beach's annual 18th Polar Bear Plunge. Air and water temps were close at around 35 degrees and as fellow friend and blogger, Jon Zolsky, noted "35F is freaking cold, pretty much as cold as the water gets before turning to ice." It was my first time attending and it was a wonderful event. There was so much excitement in the air it actually caused this onlooker to graduate from a very adament, "not a chance in ...

Long Beach, NY - The City by the Sea - New Year's Day 2017 Brunch with the bunch and a relaxing hour on the Long Beach boardwalk in time to see the sunset. Such an unusually comfortable temperature for New Year's Day brought everyone out to enjoy the seabreeze along with the opportunity to walk, run or bike off those unwanted extra holiday calories. A wonderful way to begin the New Year and to ponder what lies ahead.  I wish the best of everything to all my family, friends and ActiveRain comrades for 2017. May you have a healthy, happy and successful year.

Normally, when you're selling one home, you're enthusiastically planning for the purchase of another. Not always.Forty years was a very long time to live in one place. All their life cycle milestones were tied to this residence.  Every displayed memento needing to be wrapped, sold or trashed unleashed a torrent of near- paralyzing memories. Packing up was excruciating.  Picture elderly clients with serious health concerns. Leaving the house normally meant a visit to the doctor. A flight of steps and practically any distance at all needed to be avoided at all costs. Their minds were on other issues - pressing issues like estate planning - serious issues - matters of life and death. My home visits needed to be brief. Sitting for any length of time was difficult for them and a limited atten...

Long Beach, NY - The City by the Sea Annual Turkey Trot On November 20th, our first seasonal, cold and grey,  New York day, Long Beach was home to the 12th Annual City Council Turkey Trot.   Hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department, a one-mile race began at 8:30 a.m. for children followed by the adult 10k run (6.2 miles) which started at 9:00 a.m. on the boardwalk at New York Avenue. There were more than 600 runners despite the wintry weather and top finishers in various age categories received awards and turkeys. The flat and fast route, which follows a boardwalk path, includes East and West Broadway as seen on the video foreground. The background shows runners who have reached the boardwalk and are heading towards the finish. Participants were encouraged to bring non-perishable f...

Long Beach, NY - The City by the Sea Here's a terrific link to Long Beach, NY for all you should know about the lovely, City by the Sea, one of two, located in Nassau County on Long Island's south shore.    Long Beach has been around since 1880 and has always been known as a summer getaway with a close commute to Manhattan. It's experiencing a renaissance of sorts with new construction, businesses, restaurants and a young and trendy west side.  An absolute gem and main attraction is the brand new 2 1/4 mile lighted boardwalk. The original was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy and it was rebuilt a year later with grants and FEMA aid. People come from all over to walk, run, bike or just sit and enjoy the ocean breeze.  Free to the public, it's utilized from morning to night, rain or shine. It...

I have said this time and time again, and I will continue to say this until it's embedded into our individual minds and perhaps someday, our society. Take a day for yourself and enjoy the view. Enjoy your time with yourself, friends or family.Allow yourself an opportunity to recharge your battery. I particularly enjoy reserving Sunday for that time. The energy flows a slower pace, especially in the early to mid-morning. I personally recommend to stay away from the hustle and bustles of Malls and shopping centers if possible.

Established in 1923, The Laurel Diner of Long Beach NY is still in business and booming!!The Laurel was and still is, the spot where generations of families ritualized having their weekend breakfast—together, as one (without having to do the dishes). It is a place where families come for home a cooked meal, served by a friendly staff, at reasonable prices. When you at the Laurel, be sure to order the Nutella French Toast. Be warned, you will love it and it's recommended you share this dish. Very rich and sugary, yet it's something you want to try at least once, if not twice ;) Location:300 W Park Ave, Long Beach, NY 11561
