Germantown Variety Store welcomed by residents and visitors It has been five months since Otto Leuschel owner of Otto's Market opened the Germantown Variety Store.  Both Otto's Market and the Germantown Variety Store are great additions to the community, since no longer will full time residents or second home owners have to travel to Hudson or Red Hook for certain basic items. This is an old fashioned kind of store and brings back memories of the old general stores.  I was amazed at the variety of items found in this store. I think Otto covered every category. Senior Housing in Germantown NY Addressing senior housing As the population ages there is more need for senior housing.  In Germantown  a  town in Columbia County NY you can find one such facility.  This is the Palatine Manor.  Housing here is for seniors who are still active and not in need of assisted living. My attention was drawn to this brick building because it was covered in ivy except for the windows and door.Come to think of it, the Germantown Telephone Company should be rather easy to find. This morning I went by this an orchard in bloom, it is a bit early but I can never resist colors.  The colors were especially appreciate since the day is overcast and down right dreary. The orchard consisted of pink and white blooms, one problem, there could be a frost in the next day which would certainly affected fruit production. Today more and more seniors are going online, mostly to keep up with family spreadout all over the country.  I now speak with seniors who are sharing photos online with their grand children or connecting on Facebook.  Once a senior gets hook there is no going back. Otto's Market in Germantown New York.   Otto's Market is located in Germantown a Columbia County  town North of Red Hook.  The market is located right in the center of town.   It occupies the space which was once known as the Central Market. How important is Otto's Market to Germantown? Otto's Market is truly a vital part of the community because there are no supermarket in town.  The nearest supermarkets can be found in Red Hook 15 minutes away or in Hudson  about 15 minutes away. Although Otto's occupies a relatively small space you would be amazed at the variety of items available.  I was especially impressed with the amount of specialty items, many not found in the large supermarkets. Speechless Sunday-The old Grey Barn For  years I have driven by this old grey barn in Columbia County NY but never found the right conditions or time to take a photo. Well, I finally did. A barn like this is a reminder of how important agriculture was to the economy of the region.  It is still important. Germantown NY celebrates 300 years In October In 1710 settlers from the Palatine region of Germany settled in Columbia County NY in an area then called East Camp and then later renamed Germantown.  Fast forward 300 years; Over the next two weekends Germanton NY will be celebrating this milestone. The first weekend starting Saturday, October 2nd  will feature seminars exploring the history of the Palatines, an artifacts exhibition at the Germantown Library, a play about the Palatines performed by students, featuring two re-published books written about the Palatines as well as oral history presented by descendants of the Palatines. The seminar will include famed historians, geneologists and DNA experts.  The cost of the seminar is $25, or $35 dollar with lunch.   Germantown  NY was first settled by refugees from Rhineland Germany in 1710.  This town can be found in Columbia county and lies between Clermont and Hudson. On Saturday night my husband and I drove up to Germantown to try the new Indian restaurant.  The setting was not like the typical Indian restaurant ambiance, it was more casual, which fit right in with the area.  As the sign clearly stated, it was an Indian America restaurant and deli.  I ordered the Shrimp Biryani which was a rice dish skillfully infused with various herbs and spices and I must say it was excellent.     Taconic Farms is a large facility in Germantown Columbia County New York.  This is no ordinary farm, don't expect to find cows and rows of corns.  This is a place where serious research specimens are bred; yes rodents for research.  The facility is commonly referred to by the locals as the rat farm.
