How many of you have been to a networking event in the last month? What did you get out of it? Did you have specific goals for attending the event? First of all, let’s all get on the same page and define what networking is. In some respects, it’s taken on a life of its own. Setting goals is one of the most important keys to achieving success. Studies have shown that the most successful people are the ones who have specific, written goals. Setting a goal is not like a New Year's resolution. That is just a wish. Just wishing and hoping for something isn't going to make it happen. Setting a goal is having a target to shoot for and a plan to get there. When planning your goals, choose which categories you would like for your goals. Establish the time frame. They could be lifetime goals, 10 year, 5 year, 1 year, 6 month, 3 month, 1 month, or weekly goals. Also you can have ongoing goals, such as exercising 3 to 5 times a week. Be specific when you write your goals. Don't just write down "I want to weigh less." Write "I will weigh 180 pounds by January 2019." Ma...

You should conduct a personal audit just as so many businesses do.   It is also important to have your ...

Based on the current business environment it really has become an employer's market.   Employees are much less likely to change roles or companies based on fewer job opportunities and fear of the unknown. Many employees have made the decision that there is more security staying in their current role even if their company made some cutbacks. Employers currently have the upper hand but that won't last for long. As the business environment continues to achieve positive traction and new opportunities present themselves, disengaged employees will begin looking elsewhere. How many employees in your company have mentally quit and are just waiting for the right opportunity to present itself?   I would recommend looking at three important issues: ·     What is employee disengagement costing you ...

Successful organizations are continually looking for ways and areas to improve in order to gain a competitive advantage. Two critical questions that are often asked by Senior Management are, “How do we know that resources are being properly allocated, and how can we better utilize our limited resources?” These questions moved us to examine the whole issue of what the critical elements are which contribute to organizational success. As a result of this examination, we discovered that when an organization’s systems and departments are aligned, the greater their success. Here is a quick checkup.  Ask everyone on your team, “What are the top three goals of our organization”? If you receive exactly the same 3 answers from ALL of your staff, Congratulations! However, if you receive more than ...

When you do your company strategic plan this is a question that you may need to consider.   This is an interesting question with no clear answer. There is not one single established definition for sustainability, and there probably never will be. Sustainability means different things to different companies as well as industries. Sustainability really started with the whole concept of being green, becoming more environmentally friendly, and paying more attention to conserving our planet’s resources. However, sustainability has become much more than that. Sustainability is a megatrend that has turned into a viable business strategy which takes into account business sustainability, economic considerations, governmental issues, as well as strong opinions from customers and stakeholders.  ...

Here is a scenario that happens with many businesses.  Individuals look to increase their skills of their business.  They attend training on the latest systems or they learn the latest sales techniques.  They get training on the features and benefits of their products and services.  When it comes time to hire an employee many business owners will search for business and industry experience. I certainly can see the importance of hiring experience.  In spite of experience, however, have you ever known of someone who had great experience and was hired with huge expectations of super performance?  Several months pass and things do not happen as expected.  Before long the person resigns or is asked to leave.  What happened? The employee knew what to do and how to do it.  But that alone does ...

What does innovation really mean to you and your business? Are your seeing things through the eyes of your customers and your employees who are your internal customers? What are your customers looking for from you? According to Peter Drucker, in order for any business to succeed, a business must attract and retain customers. The key questions obviously become, “What do my potential clients want from me? How do they want to receive it, and how do I get them to keep coming back for more?” Think about this for a moment.  What do your customers view as important?  Is it your quality, your speed, your service, your employees etc.? Now the next logical follow up questions should be, “How can I make sure this is what they want, and how can we be sure we are giving it to them?” Many organizatio...

Have you tried the Moderne Barn yet? Fine American Bistro - casual and chic at the same time. Apparently, this used to be the Furniture Barn...the place where we bought the furniture for your den 30 yrs ago.  Now, it's the Moderne Barn and I have to say it's mighty tasty (try the Tiger Shrimp...yum).  We first tried this for dinner for my dad's birthday in June.  It was great.  If you go in the evening, ask for a table upstairs...it gets really loud downstairs. My mom and I thought it would be fun to have an all girl's brunch w/ my best friend Pam, her mom, my mom and my sister-in-law Tina.  It was so much fun just having girl talk (no husbands, no kids), a nice change of pace.  I've been so busy with work, it's been challenging to set time aside with good friends a family.  I was amaze...
