Welcome to the Ardena Acres area of Howell Township, New Jersey real estate.  Ardena Acres went Hollywood in 2004 when the neighborhood was featured in the Spielberg/Cruise remake War of the Worlds.  Tom Cruise's character drives his kids over to his ex-wife's place seeking sanctuary. But you won't find any human-sucking aliens hop skipping Ardena Acres in teetering giant extraterrestrial warbots. It's a quiet, pretty place to live - just off Monmouth County Road #524 (also called Adelphia-Farmingdale Road in Howell Township). Many home owners consider Ardena Acres a sanctuary, their own respite from a New York City commute or a long tedious day at school.   School tedious? Sorry, I meant to write "fun."   My photos include the old Ardena Baptist Church and cemetery, one of the oldest i...

On the corner of Old Tavern Road and Preventorium you'll amble across a small Colonial Gothic one room building, the Ardena Schoolhouse of Howell Township. Nestled atop the hill. Leaves strewn here and there in the gloom ~ the Ardena Howell Historic schoolhouse was built in 1855. What happened in The Garden State the year 1855? In 1855 the New Jersey State Normal School would open, a training institution for teachers. The Normal School would morph into Trenton State College. The University changed its name to The College of New Jersey in 1996. Today "TCNJ" is one of the most difficult schools to gain admittance. A young West Point graduate named George Meade submitted his plans for the design of the Barnegat Lighthouse. If Meade's name sounds familar it's because he defeated Lee at Gett...

A narrow escape indeed! We drove into Farmingdale this Sunday morning for "antiquing" but the shops were closing. Lucky husband I was. My missus asked, "What do we do now?""Let's go to Allaire State Park!" I suggested. I've blogged about Allaire Historic Village in Howell Township, NJ before. Please click on my earlier posts. If you're new to Monmouth County real estate you may need some tips on affordable recreation to plan your relocation. Pine Creek fits the bill. The whole outing cost us $20, a bargain. After some hot cocoa and a surprisingly good cup of coffee at the Snack Hut, we headed over to the Pine Creek Railroad. (Our little guy loved his French fries.)Note: I took these photos today and edited them to make them appear older using www.picnik.com. Ann Cummings, an exemplary R...

January was marked by solid activity in Howell real estate. So I'm back to update loyal Monmouth County real estate blog readers about Howell.  Cols Neck borders Howell. Here's my monthly Howell real estate market report, a few days shy of the end of the month. Howell Townhip, New Jersey that is. In Howell there were  twenty single family home MLS listings updated from "Active" to "Under Contract." That is significantly off from last year. I believe we're still in a buyer's market for Howell. The definition of Under Contract (also referred to as U/C) is that both buyer and seller have agreed on all major terms (contract price, financing, contingencies and closing date) and now they're working towards the closing table. What's to be done to ensure the Under Contract sale is officially cl...

Do you like  reading survival stories? Stories of how people under tremendous odds escape nature with their lives?Me too.  It is exhilirating to ponder how vast our world is and how small a space a single human occupies. Good news -- you don't have to be a Navy SEAL to enjoy our Monmouth County Park system. Everywhere you turn another park pops up!There's no better place to live in New Jersey than Monmouth County if you're a nature lover or a hiker. I took these photos in Allaire State Park, Howell Township. Give me a warm hat and gloves, sturdy boots and my digital camera. I'll walk for hours. A glorious therapy and cheaper than sweating on some doctor's couch, panning my childhood memories for little golden nuggets of angst.A stiff, brisk walk against the elements. My fingers numb fro...

A major river may not run through Howell Township but it's still a majestic and captivating place. Considering a move to Monmouth County, New Jersey? Think about Howell Township as your new home. Our county is riddled with parks, trails, lakes and open spaces. Folks complain about New Jersey property taxes. Yet many residents fail to take advantage of our region's intrinsic beauty and the County projects funded by those taxes. Why not explore nature's majesty, especially since we're paying for the upkeep? If we don't use it, will we lose it?Taking a trip to the park will improve your physical well-being. Get your spirit aligned with the cosmos. Fill your lungs with crisp, clean air. (Yes, the depictions of New Jersey as a contaminated site are grossly exaggerated. I'm committed to gettin...

Things to do in HowellHowell Township is a large town that encompasses 50 square miles.Howell offers an excellent school system, a wide variety of homes from condos, estate homes, farms, to adult communities. One of my favorite things to do in Howell is visit the Manasquan Reservoir. The scenery is delightful and it is a great place to visit whether you want to go fishing, hiking, canoeing or bird watching. There is an educational resource center of the wildlife that lives in the area.  I had the pleasure of spotting an eagle's nest and seeing an American Bald Eagle in flight.  What a site.Monmouth County is being built up like everywhere else but it is comforting to see places like this reserved.Plan a day trip and be sure to visit this scenic site in Howell.  The Reservoir's Visitor Cen...

If you're selling your Monmouth County home, try to tune out the negativity that's doled out on a daily basis from the general news. This is a tough market but it's not impossible to sell a home. Your glass may be half-full, depending upon the condition, location and solvency of your home.In 1997 the average single family home in Monmouth County sold for $217,000. Today the 'same' home sells for $565,000.If you purchased ten years ago and did not overly burden yourself (and the property) with debt, you can still look forward to closing with a fist full of equity. Remember, appreciation is immaterial unless you sell for profit or borrowed against it. And we know some homeowners are in a bind today by over-buying and over leveraging. That forces downward pressure on the entire market, but...

They say you can measure the collective passion of a team by how they bounce back from a loss. The Howell Rebels freshman football squad answered the call with a spirited, tough victory at home against Toms River on October 5th.Both teams were evenly matched. The visiting team came to play.Toms River started the game with six quick points. Most of the action took place between the 40 yard lines. The Toms River running game was fleet of foot. Howell's defense was continually challenged to maintain the 'edge' on sweeps and options. This was a defensive struggle. The offense that would come up with a big play would steal the momentum. That play was Howell's successful option-pass that covered almost 50 yards. That brought the ball down to the five yard line midway through the fourth quarte...

Whoa, Nelly! The Howell High School Freshman visiting football team ran into a buzzsaw called the Lacey Township Lions on Friday, September 28th. The winning margin was four touchdowns. Lacey was faster on both sides of the line. They were very quick on defense. The Rebels did not quit, however. Giving up big plays cost the Rebels. Some of Howell's players were hobbled by injuries but any spectator would have to give the Lions their due. They played before an enthused, vocal crowd at home. Enjoy the photos. Next up is Toms River at home. This picture is what high school athletics is all about: Congratulating each other on the field of play.Exhibiting sportsmanship. Representing your team and community with honor. (c) Copyright, 2007. Andrew J. Lenza, All Rights Reserved.

One spectator's view of the game... the Howell Rebels versus the Manalapan Braves on September 12th.This photo is what high school sports is all about: sportsmanship! Here the Rebels and Braves line up and congratulate each other after the game. The Rebels won a decisive victory, playing well on defense, offense and special teams. This was a fast paced game with a lot of action. As a fan I have to remind myself that these kids are freshman. They're playing in front of their classmates, siblings and parents. They all deserve encouragement!(There were a few penalties, most notably offsides on the defense lines. Howell's quarterback played a great game. Credit the offensive line for granting pass protection and opening some huge running lanes.)The Howell squad has real depth. From up on th...

What high school sports is all about: The players line up and congratulate each other after the game.  Howell defeated Colts Neck 12 - 0 yesterday in a spirited game between County rivals at the Rebel field. (Both towns are adjacent to each other.)What made this an exciting game to watch on a beautiful Friday afternoon? The lack of penalties. For the first game of the season both squads were sharp. A few offsides calls but no personal fouls. Give some credit to the referee team, the players and coaching staffs. Working hard in August pays off in September! Interior line play. On both sides of the ball the Rebels and Cougars competed with grit. Colts Neck enjoyed more success running outside with sweeps and options. Howell's offense relies upon a bruising inside running game. Athleticism....

Howell is a beautiful place to live, to work, to raise a family. We are really coming into the vibrantly colorful days on autumn, when the leaves change and those soft breezes turn slowly into winter's chill. If you live in New Jersey (or consider relocated to the Garden State), it helps to appreciate the change in seasons. Then there's golf in Howell Township. A favorite golf course is the local Howell Park Golf Course located on Preventorium Road. Howell Park is operated by the Monmouth County Park System. You can access Howell Park Golf Course inforation at http://www.monmouthcountyparks.com/Golf/howell_gc.aspAccording to the website, Howell Park G.C. is "repeatedly ranked among the top 50 public golf courses in America by national golf publications, this par 72 course measures 6964 ...
