Spotlight on Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey!Atlantic Highlands is a borough of the Bayshore Region of New Jersey, located within Monmouth County along the Jersey Shore. The town overlooks where the Atlantic Ocean meets Raritan Bay, and its hills are the highest points along the eastern seaboard. The Manhattan skyline can be seen from the shoreline.Atlantic Highlands is part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, a plan laid out by nine municipalities in northern Monmouth County to reinvigorate the area by promoting the quaint downtowns, natural beauty, and maritime history for which the area is known. Though the area’s history stretches back thousands of years, from the native Lenape tribe, to the first colonial settlers, to Revolutionary War raids and skirmishes, the development of t...

Some ideas are considered “outside the box” just because they’re different. Others are outside the box because the box simply isn’t big enough for it.When faced with a disappointing lack of awareness among local real estate agents about the many fine attributes of the town of Atlantic Highlands, NJ, one broker had a radical idea: educate them so they can better communicate the value of the town to their customers.“I was thinking that Atlantic Highlands is under the radar of many agents,” said Thomas McCormack, broker at Resources Real Estate in Rumson, NJ. “And there’s so much here that’s unique and special that it required something out of the ordinary to get their attention.”That’s when McCormack had an “aha moment.”“An ‘aha moment’ is a sudden understanding – it’s an abrupt recogniti...

What do you do when you're in a market where the majority of agents have blinders when it comes to towns outside of their primary market area? How 'bout, throw it a party? In the northeastern part of Monmouth County where there are affluent towns such as Rumson, Fair Haven, and Little Silver, among others, that seem to monopolize the attention of many agents, some area towns suffer in comparison despite the fact that these towns have their own strong and distinctly different features. Prime example:  Atlantic Highlands. Here's a town with incredible attributes: A viable downtown area with great restaurants (Copper Canyon, AMA, Wine Bar), shops (I love The Flaky Tart!), movie theater and more. Some of the most astounding views on the east coast with the highest point on the eastern seabo...

Atlantic Highlands was the site for the beginning of the NYC to DC AIDS Ride and I was glad to be there to see the group of about 100 riders off.  Although technically the start was in Manhattan, the riders took the Seastreak Ferry from Pier 11 and arrived in Atlantic Highlands at about 8:45am yesterday and gathered in front of the Blue Bay Inn on First Ave.  After a brief intro, guidelines for the ride and basic "Rules of the Road" they were off on a 330 mile journey. I was there to cheer on friends Chad Wolbrink and Toby Clark in what I think is an amazing feat (and, god bless them, their statue of libery hats clearly identified them from the pack). I can't even imagine making a ride of that length (let alone in green foam headgear) so I'm very impressed. After their first day (85 mi...

This Old House  has named Atlantic Hihglands as New Jersey's "Best Old House Neighborhood" in its second annual competition. I am proud to say I was instrumental in identifying Atlantic Highlands for the magazine having nominated the town after having been informed by the folks at Preservation Directory of the upcoming contest. The editors of This Old House included Atlantic Highlands in its subcategories that highlighted the best of the Northeast, Waterfront communities, Bedroom communities, and of particular interest to Sportsmen, Cottage and Bungalow enthusiasts, Families, and Retirees. "Unique, tight-knit neighborhoods are precisely what we looked for in selecting the winners of our second annual Best Old House Neighborhoods contest — places that might not be on your radar but dese...

Lots of talk these days about "The Jersey Devil"  Bruce Springsteen put out a new song and video (Springsteen makes for a very convincing - and creepy - backwoods preacher) for Halloween this year paying homage to the creature of New Jersey's Pine Barrens. And this week, the Jersey Devil will be the topic of the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society's November 19th meeting. In a talk illustrated by many photographs, drawings, and maps, Angus Kress Gillespie, Ph.D, Professor of American Studies, Rutgers University, brings together different reports of this legendary creature. As the story goes, in a small community, Leeds Point, at the coastal edge of the Pine Barrens, lived the Leeds family. The year was 1735. Already having given birth 12 times, Mother Leeds was about to deliver for th...
