Our travel plans required us to be on the road, while many were setting up their camp chairs and blankets for the Fireworks show. But don't feel bad for me, I was entertained by a different type of fire in the sky. All the following shots were taken (by my wife) through the car window as we traveled up the highway heading for home.   Sabbaday Falls, Echo Lake, and Bears…. OH MY!!!! I couldn’t manage to get away from the office much this weekend, but will be attending the Lenox 301 NASCAR Race in Loudon New Hampshire Sunday.   My Wife’s Family is out from Michigan and being the proper host she took her 6 charges on a sight seeing tour (while I was at Work) Friday. Some of the points of interest were Sabbady Falls, off the Kancamagus scenic highway in Lincoln New Hampshire.   Then of course no trip would be complete with out a visit to Franconia Notch state park, with Echo Lake at the base of Cannon Mountain Ski Resort.   High-end neighborhoods are experiencing short sales too…opportunity is knocking at South Peak Resort at Loon Mountain in Lincoln New Hampshire. Land offered at short sale…that’s right I said land!!   I came to Loon Mountain 40 years ago, and literally grew up there. In the early years we loaded up the station wagon and spent the next two hours talking about our plans for the weekend. These conversations centered on recreation and family time naturally. Over the years our connections to our home away from home grew stronger and the White Mountains were always on our mind.  These trips were not a winter only escape from the suburbs of Boston, Spring hikes along the Pemigewasset River with the water rushing by from the snow melt is a sight to see. A Weekend brook hike Water channels deep in to granite ledge. The Hemlock keep the forest floor shaded and the moss growing.   Clark’s Trading Post, a White Mountain Attraction and a family Tradition. The Family Patriarch has passed; we were all saddened when W. Murray Clark left us for the big bear show in the sky a few months back.                                                                                                      Young Murray & Maureen have been putting on the show for the past few years, and one could say they cut their teeth while raising bears. The show must go on and it will with opening day just two weeks away everyone is getting ready.   The 60th Anniversary of the bear show will be celebrated; the bears will be coaxed with vanilla ice cream to perform for the crowds. The flume Gorge is in Lincoln New Hampshire, most would call it the entrance to the Franconia Notch State park. Both of these descriptions are true...it is a state park, but folks from Lincoln want to make sure you know what town it really is in. The Famous Indian Head Motel is one of the last places along Rte 3 in Lincoln that you can stop, drink, sleep and eat before entering the State park lands...and but a few hundred yards from the Flume. The observation tower offers a clear view of Mt. Indian head which is a really nice hike for an intermediate hiker not too hard, but not too easy either. The peak of Mount Liberty still has a bit of snow, which is the water feed for the Flume gorge.   May 10th photos from the Kancamagus scenic highway, Lincoln New Hampshire. May has arrived but not really in the White Mountains, they didn’t get the memo. It flurried enough to accumulate on one of the highest roads in Northern New England. There are some spectacular views and hikes along this stretch of National Forest, and no commercial structures for 35 miles.
