Sanford started as a place where railroad lines crossed in 1871.  One of the first homes built was for the depot agent of the Raleigh and Augusta Airline Railroad.  This house was built around 1872 at what is now the crossing of Hawkins Street and Charlotte Avenue.  The home served as one of Sanford's first schools and was a home for many years.  When the home was slated for demolition in the 1960s, a group formed to save the house.  It was moved across the street and now serves as a museum focusing on the history of the local community, with a focus on railroads in particular, which were a key part of Sanford's early history. The museum is frequently opened on the weekends during the spring, summer, and fall months.  We recently visited on a Saturday afternoon and enjoyed browsing thro...

Sanford, North Carolina is fortunate to have a local professional theater.  The Temple theater runs a full season with a variety of shows.  The theater teaches classes in theater and uses local citizens in some shows but casts many professional actors and actresses.  Our family attended an exceptional performance of The Sound of Music in November of last year.  My daughter in particular enjoyed the show and we found the quality of acting to be much more than we had expected.  The Temple Theater has two more shows this seasons - A Dash of Rosemary in April and Beehive: the 60s Musical Sensation in June.  Seasons for the theater run from August through June, with eight shows in the current season. The Temple Theater was originally built in 1925, and continued to operate until 1965.  The ...

To start at the beginning:  Creek course at Carolina Trace Sanford, NC The 16th hole is a very compact par 3.  The drive to the pin is a mere 93 to 151 yards but don't let the short distance fool you because this hole has plenty of hazards and challenges to make up for its small size. From the tee, the view of the green in the distance is a bit daunting.  The large sand trap guarding the front of the green is only the start.  The pond guards both the front and right of the hole.  If you overshoot the green, your ball will likely roll down the hill on the backside and into the road beyond.  Nice, short par 3, NOT! This closer view of the hole shows what a small target the green is.  A perfect tee shot will land you on the green.  A less than perfect shot will land you in the sand trap or...

To start at the beginning:  Creek course at Carolina Trace Sanford, NC These two Camellias are along the cart path on the way to hole 13.  The blooms were beautiful on this late winter day. Hole 13 is a par 4 with 286 to 299 yards to the bottom of the cup. The hole rises slightly just after the tee and then drops down a moderate hill.  About halfway to the pin, the fairway turns to the left.  At this point, there is a bunker on the left side of the hole. Homes on both sides of this hole are in Trentwood and Woodemere. The hole is guarded by a sand trap in the front.  The green is particularly small and elevated on a small hill.  This means a shot off by even the slightest amount will roll off the green and into the sand trap, into the trees beyond the hole, or back onto the grass if you...
