One of the joys of living in the mountains of Murphy, NC is the ever-changing view.  With four colorful seasons, watching the sun move across the hills or seeing the moon rise over the peaks is better than anything on TV. But those incredible mountain views aren't always a gift of Mother Nature.  Sometimes a little help is needed.  And that help comes in the form of some of the most courageous, hardworking people I've ever seen - the men who climb to the heights to clear that view.  Sorry ladies, I don't mean to be sexist but so far I've never seen a woman do this job! I don't believe in cutting down a tree if I can possibly avoid it.  So when we build a spec house or clear a new lot in Paradise Mountain near Murphy, I hire a local tree trimmer to take out s...

Today is July 15... time to enjoy a taste of summer in Murphy, North Carolina while my glass is still half full.  Last night I slipped out on the porch off our bedroom to sit on the rocker and gaze at the mountains in the moonlight.  A cool breeze enticed me to turn off the air conditioning and open the doors and windows.  Nature's soft sounds played a soothing lullaby for my restless soul. The other day we made a summer memory - my youngest daughter and I.  She's thirteen, born in the age of Ipods and cellphones, forever connected to technololgy by invisible wireless chains.  But for a precious few hours, we went back to the days of little house on the prairie.  With empty gallon jugs in hand and the dogs tagging along, we headed down our mountain lane t...

It happened this morning...I was headed out to my car on a sunny but very chilly Friday when a flash of yellow caught my eye in the mostly brown winter landscape.  A solitary daffodil bud is opening up, poking through a heap of dead leaves at the edge of the woods along my driveway.   It's from a clump of bulbs I rescued last spring, hastily transplanted in full bloom to save them from the backhoe about to bury them under a ton or more of gravel at a nearby construction site.    I wasn't sure whether the bulbs would survive.  Did I get enough of the root ball?  Would the new site be too dry and rocky?  Only time would tell.  But one thing I knew for sure - if I didn't take the time and plant the bulbs, they had no chance at all.   Spring comes early in the southern mountains of Nort...

It was a quiet Saturday morning in Murphy, NC, the last day of May, 2003.  As I drove through downtown Murphy, I flipped on the radio just in time to hear that Eric Rudolph, one of the FBI's 10 most wanted fugitives, had just been apprehended in North Carolina.  "Wouldn't it be a kick," I thought, "if they found him somewhere near here?"  Within two hours (of course!) CNN, NBC and every other major news provider had vans with enormous satellite dishes parked in every available space around the courthouse.  By Saturday evening, the old train depot had been commandeered as a makeshift location for press conferences. Reporters from every media from the New York Times to the BBC were swarming the streets like a Biblical plague of locusts.  It was a dream story.  Jeff ...

Welcome to Murphy, North Carolina - we're two hours from everywhere!  That's how we describe our corner of the beautiful Smokey Mountains.  And we're not just measuring driving distance when we say that. Yes, it's true that we're two hours from Atlanta, Chattanooga and Knoxville.  We're two hours from Asheville, North Carolina.  We're two hours from Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, with Dollywood, dinner theatres and outlet malls aplenty.  In two hours, you can be at Hartsfield, the busiest airport in the country.  Or at Hamilton Place, the largest mall in Tennessee.  Or at the Biltmore Estate, the biggest privately owned home in the United States.  But those of us who have chosen to make our homes here, whether full time or only for those precious vacation days, l...

Ready To List In The Spring? The spring is a crucial time of the year in real estate.Even with the current economy there will be buyers whoare ready to look for a new home or land in our beautifulNorth Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee mountains. For those who are looking to buy as well as sellers whosaid last year that they would list "in the spring"-- when does the season actually get started? Although the official start of spring is March 20th, we wouldadvise our clients to list their property at the end of February. Some sellers feel they want to wait until after Easter, butthat might be a little too late, especially this year since itfalls on April 12th. Spring is the time we start to see buyersbeginning their search, requesting more information andplanning on making a visit to the mou...

We've Found The Best Place In Murphy To Live... Lee and I have been so blessed each morning to wake up to the beautiful views of the NC, GA and TN mountains from our home in Wolf Mountain Estates. Coming from Florida to Murphy in 1997, it still never ceases to amaze me how breathtaking the layer upon layer of mountain ridge views are. What better way to end each day than with a mountain sunset. We truly appreciate the developer of Wolf Mountain in preserving the beauty of a true mountain community and not stripping away most of the trees like some do. We love living in a subdivision, but still want to be "on the mountain." After all, that's why we moved from the packed city of pavement to enjoy the natural beauty of this area. We even get to see wild turkey, deer, hummingbirds and other...

years ago when I came to the mountains of North Carolina I was working out on my property. A friend came by and we were talking about how beautiful it was to live here and how fortunate we were in what we were able to do and enjoy. My friend asked me what time it was ,I said it was about 4 pm he said no it's 1950. Well it's 14 years later now so it must be about 1964 or thats how it feels. Living here in these mountains continue to make me feel like it was when I was a kid growing up back home. Selling real estate and travelling these mountains is a joy! Hope you can enjoy this sunset and have great day.

Many of our clients are always shocked to find out you can't get a mixed drink or shot at any of the local restaurants (with the exception of Cherokee Hills Golf Course, which is classified as a resort). Not only that, you can't buy beer. Does it seem sane when you can buy wine at the grocery store and straight liquor at the ABC store in town?Either way, Murphy's Town Board is reconsidering the liquor by the drink option. Wells and West (very influential persons in our community) are trying to generate interest in large chain restaurants coming to Murphy on land they own. Two restaurants want to come badly, but will only do so if they can serve drinks. It was up for vote in 2003 and was not passed - 55% voted no and 45% voted yes. Will you be able to have a mixed drink with dinner now? I...

We've got our first cover! We're quite excited about having the cover of Southern Home Market magazine. I personally did the layout to ensure its going to be a great issue. It's a great prowl front chalet home that is great! I look forward to posting the image of the cover when it comes out.I'll use this opportunity to explain the difference between many of the magazines in our area. We have currently two real estate magazines in the Murphy NC area: Southern Home Market and Homes for Sale in the Mountains. Homes and Land will also be reintroduced to our area. I'll be advertising a full page in their first issue to test their effectiveness.Homes for Sale in the Mountainsis a larger, more expensive magazine. I advertised in it for 2006 and sold only one house from it. Sellers - it's gone....

Murphy, North Carolina has experienced quite a bit of new construction to come on the market in the past 4 years. Everything from chalets, log cabins, cabins, ranches - you name it. We should even have condos coming soon if the project takes off. We've been blessed with a great new inventory giving real estate buyers more choices on new homes. Many builders have become a bit nervous and have drastically cut their inventories. This has left buyers with fewer choices on new construction homes. Even so, many of the reputable builders still have quite a few they are building as I write this. Those are the best to buy.As I read the Wall Street Journal (August 1, 2007), it references that inflation rose just 0.1% in June from May. It also mentioned labor costs increased 0.9% last quarter. That...
