The 2011 Monroe NC Real Estate Market--Five Facts It's time to look at the real estate market in Monroe NC and to assess how home buyers and home sellers fared in 2011.  Monroe offers some of the most affordable housing in Union County NC. 2011-11-21 Treehouse Vineyards—A Monroe NC Winery A winery in Monroe NC?  You might be surprised to hear that Monroe has its very own family-owned winery.  Cotton fields and horse farms are more typically found in the rolling hills of Union County NC. Drive through some of Monroe’s oldest neighborhoods to Bay Street and you will find Treehouse Vineyards.  The winery is set on 35 acres and it’s totally within the city limits of Monroe.  The vineyards are planted with muscadine grapes, North Carolina’s native grapevine.  The Norden family planted muscadines because they are easy to grow in the area’s climate and nearly disease-free. If you know wines, you may think of wines made from muscadine grapes as very sweet.  Attend a tasting at Treehouse Vineyards and you’ll learn that muscadine w...

2011-11-07 Monroe NC Air Show Honors Military Veterans I joined thousands of other people yesterday at the Warriors and Warbirds Air Show in Monroe NC.  With brilliant Carolina blue skies overhead, we all enjoyed the display of vintage airplanes from the World War II  to Korea and Vietnam eras. The Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport opened at 9am with the airplanes parked around the grounds.  We could get up close to see the planes that would be flown overhead in the afternoon.  Two restored planes, the Spirit of Freedom and the Tinker Belle, were open for interior tours. The Spirit of Freedom is one of the planes that took part in the Berlin Airlift.  The Tinker Belle is a cargo plane that flew over the Himalayas during World War II. At noon, the air show began with four jumpers landin...

A new winery with a new concept and they are doing great.  Welcome to ... Treehouse Vineyards in Monroe, NC "We are a North Carolina winery producing wines from the first American grape - the muscadine, which is native to our region.  We invite you to come taste the fruits of our labor.  We think you will be pleasantly surprised!" Not only is the tasting room open there are tree houses which come fully furnished and can be rented by the night.  My biggest concern.. spend too much time in the tasting room and you may not be able to climb into the tree house. Where did they get the idea for a treehouse??? Phil Nordan is the owner and related..."As a kid growing up on a farm in eastern North Carolina, I built  many treehouses.  In the spring of 1999, I decided it as time to build a  treeho...

Monroe NC Farm Show and Festival Showcases Union County’s Agricultural Heritage If you’re a newcomer to Charlotte NC and you head out of the city into Union County, Charlotte’s neighbor to the south, you might think that strip malls and new subdivisions are what Union County’s all about.  If so, you have the wrong idea. Union County NC is actually one of the top agricultural counties in North Carolina.  According to the NC Cooperative Extension, Union County is ranked third in the state in farm level income.  Approximately 167,370 of Union’s 408,960 total acres exist as farms.  Most of this acreage is harvested cropland.  A lesser portion is in hay crops and pastures, commercial horticulture and managed woodlands.  Union County’s major agricultural commodities are broilers, turkeys, whe...

Winter Damage Taking a tour through the landscape this spring has been quite depressing! Many ornamental shrubs look like they have come through a serious battle and were not necessarily on the winning side.  Spotted leaves, dead stems and branches, and leaf loss are rampant on the Indian hawthorns, camellias, gardenias, and many others right now.  Much of what we are seeing is damage from the very cold winter we experienced. Many of our shrubs did not have an opportunity to acclimatize to the cooler temperatures prior to those severe freezing temperatures we saw in December.  Then, the continued single digit temperatures really put many shrubs to the test. Shrubs that are hardy in our region (USDA Zone 7b) may not be happy in this temperature range, and we are sure to see a few of t...

Here is a bit of history concerning the Union County Crisis Assistance Ministry and how they serve the community.   Per their website... www.unioncrisis.org "Union County Crisis Assistance Ministry was founded 23 years ago by several local pastors.   The Canada geese have returned.  The same pair has nested on our pond for the last 17 years.  They mate for life and rebuild the same nest year after year. Like clockwork, in early February, the pair flies in with their juvenile children, hang around as if they are considering the integrity of the neighborhood, and then insist to their year-old kids that it is time for them to launch.  The adolescent offspring depart to greener shorelines, and the husband and wife settle in for the next six weeks of nesting, incubation, and hatching of new babies. Unlike most folks living near ponds and lakes in Union County, our family actually looks forward to the coming of our geese.  Their arrival marks the point in the year when we can expect the blooms of winter: winter jasmine, hyacinth, forsyt...

For my entire adult life and even before that I guess I have fought the curly hair that has adorned my head. I have met a couple of people over the last year that have tried keratin and most are raving fans. A couple other friends have tried it and it was a flop. This past week I took the plunge after my favorite stylist Renee Cristy, co-owner of Renee Curtis Hair Studio called to let me know that they had a new keratin product. We took before and after pictures to showcase the difference in what this awesome product is capable of. La-Brasiliana keratin is the product that Renee used on my hair. I sat down in her chair and almost 2 hours later the results were breath-taking. The other patrons in the salon were in shock and asking all sorts of questions about what exactly she had done to...

I don't know about your family, but mine loves Olive Garden. We have lived on this side of Union County for almost 8 years now. Last Fall when we saw the construction begin on what looked like a restaurant, we all joked that we would love for it to be an Olive Garden. Well I guess it was not a joke and here we are a couple months later with a fabulous new restaurant. Now if we could just get a table. Until such time as we can get inside in under 2 hours we still love our smaller local Italian restaurant in downtown Monroe. What do you hand out to clients when they ask for your card? I have been pondering this for a couple of weeks. Discussing social media matters with someone this morning we came to this topic. We both said we still used paper cards but what we put on them would be changing.  She showed me a site called about.me and it is simply a virtual business card. Instead of putting your blog, your website, your twitter, Facebook and YouTube information on your card, you can just put all of this on the virtual site. Then your business card is free of this information and the URL of your about.me site is put on the card in its place.   We also discussed the QR code and if the discussion starters would be more or less beneficial to people if it were on the card, because let's face it....PEOPLE ARE GOI...
