Tusquittee in Clay County NC ... Where the water-dogs laughed Tusquittee (originally Tusquitee) is a lovely community located in Clay County, North Carolina. Mountain and Pasture views with plenty of creek and lake views too. It is bordered on the north by Fires Creek Bear Reserve which is within the Nantahala National Forest. The Tusquitee Mountain range includes Tusquitee Bald at 5,240 feet.   Tusquitee is a  Cherokee  Indian word meaning "Where the water-dogs laughed" (A Water Dog, sometimes also called mud-puppy, is a type of Salamander). "Where the water-dogs laughed" according to folklore, a Cherokee hunter crossing over Tusquitee Bald in a very dry season, heard voices, and creeping silently toward the place from which the sound proceeded, peeped over a rock and saw two water-dog...

I Shot A Deer This Morning! One of the things I love about living in the mountains is having wildlife just outside the back door.  We have seen several of the deer who live in our neighborhood.  While hiking on the back side of our property last week we found a couple of spots where it was evident they had even been spending the night with us! Each morning I look out to see if our four-legged friends are hanging out and, much to my delight, this morning they were peacefully wandering around looking for a snack. The grass and yummy green shoots are about gone so we’ll be stopping at the feedstore this afternoon for corn.  This should give us plenty more opportunities to get some great shots! Hope you enjoy! Cyndi PS - just to clear up any misconceptions - I SHOT the deer with my Nikon!!

Thanksgiving With The Family - Today we had the pleasure of traveling to Fletcher, NC (just south of Asheville) to enjoy Thanksgiving with our daughter, her boyfriend and his Mom.  It’s about a two-hour drive from our home in Hayesville and the drive over the mountain through Franklin this morning was beautiful.  It was also nice to sit and relax for a couple of hours after being in the kitchen last night cooking turkey and dressing for today. When we arrived at her home our daughter and I had fun fixing green bean casserole and mashed potatoes to go with the turkey and dressing. For dessert she whipped up a pecan pie (Dad’s favorite) and a pumpkin as well. After stuffing ourselves silly, we all sat around while the two of us Moms shared crazy stories of the the kids’ childhoods.  Needl...

Being about 500 miles inland the mountains of Western North Carolina and Northeast Georgia didn’t suffer from the ill winds of Hurricane Sandy.  The big, bad wolf huffed and puffed and blew a lot of leaves around but otherwise we were, fortunately, unscathed! In addition to blowing the patio furniture around, Sandy blew in some really cold temperatures. Maggie Valley, about an hour east of us, reported got 3” of snow overnight!  Higher elevations like Boone and Banner Elk where the bigger ski resorts are located received even more and may even open a trail or two! I was disappointed though when I took the dogs and cats out this morning and there wasn’t so much as a speck of white on the deck, cars or yard! One of our favorite things to see, early in the season, is the dusting of snow t...

Clay County NC Master Gardeners Get In The Fall Spirit. As  many of you know, we recently purchased a “fixer-upper” foreclosure.  It was our intention to fix it up, put it back it on the market and, hopefully, make a little money in the process.   However, after meeting several of the neighbors it didn’t take us long to realize what a great neighborhood we had stumbled upon and that we really wanted to stay here for a while. A few days ago when coming into the development we stopped to compliment our neighbors, Jack and Jean Parrish, on their fall display - a artfully arranged bale of hay, scarecrow, pumpkins and flowers.    Turns out they are Clay County Master Gardeners and the fall display is part of their annual fundraiser. When we had kids at home I loved to have similar displays ...

What do the youth in the montains enjoy doing? To answer this question I wanted to think of what my kids were involved in after we made our move to the mountains. My two sons have played soccer in Hayesville, NC since 2005. Currently, my youngest son is playing soccer for Hayesville High School. One thing you notice at at youth soccer game is all the surrounding mountains and beauty. No matter where you go the local natural beauty is outstanding. Our local youth soccer program is known for being a very strong. The age of these participants range from 4 years old to 14 years old. This is an activity that is enjoyed in our local area, and that is fun for the whole family. Practices for these teams are usually a few times a week and games on the weekends. Games are played in Hayesville, M...

If you are coming to the mountains of Northeast Georgia or Western North Carolina then you have got to try Rib Country BBQ. Their baby back ribs are fall off the bone delicious and their pulled pork is one of my favorites. Rib Country has not only great bbq but a varied menu including premium aged sirlion steak, fried shrimp, smoked turkey and my son's favorite, chicken tenders. I haven't tried their steak but thier fried shrimp are excellent (hey, I am from Florida, I know my shrimp) and their chicken tenders are lightly breaded thick cuts of white meat chicken not that processed chicken parts that you often get. I particularly like thier smoked turkey salad with their spicey ranch dressing. Finally, if you are really hungry get the country fried onion loaf with the spicey ranch dress...

Granny’s Attic is a Hayesville thrift store whose donations (100%) go to Hospice.  The store is run by a group of dedicated, hard working ladies.  I mention Granny’s Attic for two reasons. First, visiting the store is like going on a treasure hunt; you never know what you will find! Granny’s is closed Monday and Tuesday so that the volunteers can price and display new items.  That said, the best day to go is on Wednesdays.  My family and I have bought many wonderful items such as a brand new comforter set, kitchen utensils and patio decorations.  The second reason Granny’s is so important is the charity for which it raises money.  Having an uncle suffer with cancer, I know how important Hospice is to families.  The people who work for this organization are truly angels who are skilled a...
