At MaxWellness Therapeutic Farm, just off N.C. 73 in Iron Station near Lake Norman, kids experience an unusual spin on traditional counseling: some of their therapists are horses. Tiffany Lindsay, president and resident equine specialist at the nonprofit equine assisted therapy organization, spent most of her life around horses before she discovered how healing they can be. “I always knew horses were very intuitive, but until I started doing this, I didn’t realize how intuitive they are,” Lindsay said, watching four of her horses socialize with kids through the fence before the start of a group session. The horses’ “intuition,” though difficult to quantify, can be seen in the ways children interact with the horses. At the start of a girls’ group session, kids immediately spill throu...

A national shortage of grass carp means Lake Norman will not be receiving any new fish this year, but experts don’t think that will cause a setback in the fight against hydrilla. At least 1,200 sterile grass carp are usually stocked in the lake each year to eat hydrilla, an invasive aquatic weed that can interfere with boating, swimming and fishing. However, fewer of the non-reproducing fish are available this year in the U.S., and only three smaller lakes in North Carolina will be receiving any. “The major reason (for the shortage) is the huge number of fish stockings in Florida, Texas and South Carolina, as well as the warm winter, which affected the availability of the 12-inch grass carp from the fish farms,” said Bob Elliot, assistant director of the Lake Norman Marine Commissio...

Lake Norman towns wrestle with vacation rentals     With more vacation rental properties popping up around the lake, neighbors and local governments look to regulate while property owners fight for their rights. (Courtesy of Steve Haimbaugh) As the Lake Norman area grows, more people will look to lakefront communities as a destination for vacation. That is, if regulations don’t prevent it. Some local leaders say allowing more vacation rental properties on the lake could cause problems for neighbors, but property owners say they have a right to determine how they use their land. The issue caused an uproar in Cornelius earlier this year when the grace period for existing rentals expired. Resident Steve Haimbaugh complained that the town was preventing him from recovering his investment. S...

You know who you are. Yes, I am sure you were smokin’ hot  back then— with your big bangs and feather boa. But, I want to let you in on a little secret, you’re not foolin’ anyone. Even if they’ve never met you in person, that ancient do and dated wardrobe you’re sportin’ on your business card let’s everyone know that your picture looks absolutely nothing like you do today. So you’re not a spring chicken anymore…that’s ok. You’re a seasoned professional who has written a contract or two (more like hundreds)—that’s much more important when marketing yourself than trying to act like you don’t have any wrinkles. I’m just sayin.    Lyn Briggs Buyer Specialist, Susan Johnson & Associates   So, this is a picture of my sweet Mom, Linda Collins, who has been in real estate since 1984. This photo...

How’s the market? This is a question that Realtors® have been fielding with care and trepidation for the past several years. As marketing professionals, we didn’t want to instill more angst in the public about the real estate market, but at the same time, we needed to keep it real and let folks know the truth, no matter how grim. Today, if you ask an agent, “How’s the market?”, you’re likely to hear a word that we haven’t been able to use in a long time— Terrific! That’s right; it seems the market has finally turned the corner. In fact, because supply is low and demand high, we’re starting to see bidding wars again. Most buyers, and probably sellers for that matter, who find themselves in a bidding war are stunned. Unfortunately for some buyers, they wanted to make sure we had hit botto...

Contrary to its name, a short sale is anything but short. On time that is. What it is short on is money. A short sale is when a homeowner owes more on their property than they can get in today’s market. Before you get too excited, not everyone who is upside down on their mortgage can qualify for a short sale. Your bank will ask for documentation to prove that you have a hardship—you lost your job, you’re sick, someone died, etc, and you can no longer afford your home. In most cases, in order to qualify, homeowners will already be several months behind on their mortgage payments. If you’re anxious to get the process started, the first thing you need to do is list your home for sale. Your bank will likely not let you know how much less than what you owe will be enough to satisfy the debt ...
